The Impossible Spain 2012, 114 min, Digital, Dir: Juan Antonio Bayona 4, 10, 14 @ 9PM, 5, 6 @ 9:30PM, 7, 13 @ 7PM

Maria (Naomi Watts), Henry (Ewan McGregor) and their three sons begin their winter vacation in Thailand, looking forward to a few days in tropical paradise. But on the morning of December 26th, as the family relaxes around the pool, a terrifying roar rises up from the center of the earth. Based on a true story, the film is an unforgettable account of a family caught, with tens of thousands of strangers, in the mayhem of one of the worst natural catastrophes of our time. But the truelife terror is tempered by the unexpected displays of compassion, courage and simple kindness that Maria and her family encounter during the darkest hours of their lives. Both epic and intimate, devastating and uplifting, The Impossible is a journey to the core of the human heart.

Patti Smith: Dream of Life USA 2008, 109 min, Digital, Dir: Steven Sebring 5 @ 7PM

Filmmaker Steven Sebring directs this documentary about legendary musician Patti Smith, surveying her life, her career, and the philosophical and spiritual themes that have remained so potent in her work. (Cammila Albertson, Rovi)

The Films of Gerard Malanga 6 @ 7PM

Buzkashi! Encore Canada 2012, 82 min, Digital, Dir: Najeeb Mirza 4 @ 7PM, 7 @ 9:15PM

Buzkashi! is a story of three fascinating characters who are at the top of their sport of Buzkashi in Tajikistan, a former Soviet republic nestled in the Pamir mountains. Donning their protective equipment - including tank helmets from previous wars - they steer their horses to join the hundreds of others playing on the plateaus of this mountainous country. The rivalries, alliances politics and intrigues surrounding the sport put ancient values of honor and integrity head-to-head with ego-driven hunger for power and wealth

Andy Warhol: Portraits of the Artist as a Young Man USA 1965, 21 min, Silent, Digital, Dir: Gerard Malanga

In the style of the Warhol/Malanga collaboration of Screen Tests, Malanga turns the camera on Warhol’s still-portrait, all shot at the Factory on different days, in a series of 7 individual studies.

Join celebrated photographer, film-maker, and poet Gerard Malanga, named by the New York Times as Andy Warhol’s “most important associate” before and during the legendary Factory scene, for the screening of three early and rare shorts. Previously featured at the 2005 Viennale and the Toronto Film Festival, these films capture the experimental spirit of their moment, as Malanga turns the camera back on Warhol, memorializes his own days in NYC, and searches for his poetic self through the love of his muse. In partnership with the Alberta Institute for American Studies. Gerard Malanga will be in attendance for an intro and Q & A.

The Filmmaker Records a Portion of His Life in the Month of August USA 1968, 19 min, Digital, Dir: Gerard Malanga

In 1968, without a camera or the means to make a movie, Malanga’s mentor and friend, the filmmaker, Marie Menken, gave him an 8mm Keystone camera and said, “Gerard, go out and make a movie!” The result was a filmic diary in the style of the French Scopitone music promotionals of the mid-1960s.

Gerard Malanga w/ Archie, 2005, Bklyn, NY Photo (c) Asako Kitaori

In Search of the Miraculous USA 1967, 29 min, Digital, Dir: Gerard Malanga

Malanga’s most ambitious film to date, partly inspired stylistically after Luchino Visconti’s movie, Senso (1954). It deals with an unrequited relationship, thus documenting and preserving even the most remote and minute details of the muse’s life and existence. It is metaphorically a search for what “resists memory.”

Treacherous Heart Canada 2012, 90 min, Digital, Dir: Kathyrn Fasegha 8 @ 7PM, 9 @ 4:15PM, 10 @ 1PM

Treacherous Heart is the story of a young Nigerian-Canadian woman struggling to deal with her faith, the conflicts that arise from love and forgiveness as she faces an arranged marriage. Ngozi is caught between disobeying her parents by following her heart and pursuing love or going along with her parents’ wishes. She has to deal with family and societal pressures, and take on age-old cultural prejudices as she prepares to embrace an inter-ethnic/inter-religious relationship. Treacherous Heart highlights the cultural clash and divide between Immigrant parents and their Canadian children. It offers a rare insight into the lives of immigrant Canadians. FILMMAKER IN ATTENDANCE FOR ALL SCREENINGS.

DEDfest/// The Evil Dead USA 1981, 85 min, Digital, Dir: Sam Raimi 8 @ 11:30PM

Nearly 30 years after it was first unleashed and called “ferociously original”, relentlessly terrifying”, and “the ultimate experience in grueling horror” the original Evil Dead is a great warm up to April’s release of the Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell produced remake. As four friends travel to a cabin in the woods they stumble across an ancient book that contains the power to unleash flesh possessing demons upon them. In year six of DEDfest we’re proud to finally screen Sam Raimi’s first film that set the path for his career with his innovative filming techniques and insanely creative gore and special effects work on a shoestring budget.

Cloudburst USA/ Canada 2011, 93 min, Digital, Dir: Thom Fitzgerald 8, 13 @ 9:30PM, 10 @ 7PM, 11 @ 9PM,

A romantic road film starring Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker as Stella and Dot, an aging couple who escape from a nursing home in Maine and drive to Nova Scotia on a quest to be legally married. Stella and Dot have been together for 31 years and have faithfully accompanied one another through life’s ups and downs. Now in their seventies, Stella is hard of hearing and Dot is legally blind. When Dotty’s prudish granddaughter Molly decides the best place for Dot is a nursing home that will provide all the necessities, it forces Stella and Dot to make a bold decision: they will leave their hometown and make their way to Canada, where same-sex marriage is legal. It’s a last-gap bid to stay together. With equal parts humour and grace, Cloudburst explores the important themes of life, death and love through the eyes of this oddball trio.

A seemingly disparate group of tenants (including Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy, and Frank McCrae) struggle to save their apartment building from being demolished by a greedy land developer and his hired thugs. United by the arrival of a family of alien mechanical life forms with the knack to fix things, they realize that a home is more than bricks and mortar, and neighbours can be family. Directed by Matthew Robbins (Disney’s Dragonslayer) and screenplay by Brad Bird (Pixar’s The Incredibles),*batteries not included is a heartening story of second chances and the courage to stand up for one’s beliefs. Free Admission for Children 12 and under!

A Royal Affair (En kongelig affære) Denmark/ Sweden/ Czech Republic/ Germany 2012, 137 min, Digital, Dir: Nikolaj Arcel, Danish w/ subtitles 15, 17, 21 @ 6:45PM, 16 @ 4:15PM, 18 @ 8:45PM, 17 @ 1PM, 16 @ 9PM

A grand period drama with a lusty, beating heart, A Royal Affair displays all the talents and charms of its star, Mads Mikkelsen, while director and co-writer Nikolaj Arcel brings a sharp, contemporary edge to this notorious true story of illicit love and poltical intrigue... Mikkelsen and Vikander are electrifying as the ill-starred lovers, and their palpable chemistry, combined with Arcel’s assured direction and the film’s fine art direction and costume design, create both a sweepingly romantic and subtly nuanced portrait of this infamous episode in Denmark’s history. At once intimate and epic, A Royal Affair is one of the finest, most well-crafted period dramas in recent memory. (TIFF)

Herman’s House

The Flowers of St. Francis (Francesco, giullare di Dio) Italy 1950, 83 min, 35mm, Dir: Roberto Rossellini, Italian w/ subtitles 9, 11, 14 @ 7PM, 10 @ 3:15PM, 12 @ 8:45PM

In a series of simple and joyous vignettes, director Roberto Rossellini and co-writer Federico Fellini lovingly convey the universal teachings of the People’s Saint: humility, compassion, faith, and sacrifice. Gorgeously photographed to evoke the medieval paintings of Saint Francis’ time, and cast with monks from the Nocera Inferiore Monastery, The Flowers of St. Francis is a timeless and moving portrait of the search for spiritual enlightenment. (Criterion Collection) “The most beautiful film in the world.” (Francois Truffaut)

USA/ Canada/ UK 2012, 80 min, Digital, Dir: Angad Bhalla 15 @ 9:15PM, 16 @ 12:45PM, 16, 20 @ 7PM, 19 @ 9:30PM

Herman Wallace has spent 40 years imprisoned in solitary confinement in a six-foot-by-nine-foot cell for a crime many believe he never committed. The injustice of solitary confinement and the transformative power of art are explored in Herman’s House, ...a documentary that follows the unlikely friendship between Jackie Sumell a New York artist, and one of America’s most famous inmates, as they collaborate on an acclaimed art project. With compassion and meaningful artistry, Herman’s House takes us inside the lives and imaginations of two unforgettable characters. The Edmonton and U of A chapter of Amnesty International will host the screening on Sat, Mar 16 @ 7PM. Please join them in the lobby prior to the film for information tables, discussion, and a letter to sign regarding Herman Wallace and the Angola 3.

Mad Dog Morgan Australia 1976, 102 min, Digital, Dir: Philippe Mora 15 @ 11PM

This month Metro Bizarro brings you a taste of the wild outback with Mad Dog Morgan. Dennis Hopper stars as Dan Morgan, the infamous real-life 1800’s outlaw, an Irish immigrant working as a gold digger in the treacherous Australian brush. When his comrades reject him, Morgan resorts to stealing horses, and is caught and sentenced to jail. After years of abuse and brutality, Morgan is released, and falls back into his outlaw ways. Soon Morgan is wanted at any price, dead or alive, setting the backdrop for this intense and riveting thriller. “An excellent early example of the Australian revival, this is a pacy, violent bushranger saga.” (Time Out) Mad Dog Morgan was a worldwide theatrical hit in 1977, and was nominated by the Australian Film Institute Awards for Best Director and Actor in a Supporting Role.

National Geographic’ photographer James Balog was once a skeptic about climate change. But through his Extreme Ice Survey, he discovers undeniable evidence of our changing planet. In Chasing Ice, we follow Balog across the Arctic as he deploys revolutionary time-lapse cameras designed for one purpose: to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers. Balog’s hauntingly beautiful videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate. As the debate polarizes North America, and the intensity of natural disasters ramp up around the world, Chasing Ice depicts a heroic photojournalist on a mission to gather evidence and deliver hope to our carbon-powered planet.

Oldboy South Korea 2003, 120 min, Digital, Dir: Park Chan-wook 19 @ 7PM

As a young man, Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) is kidnapped right before his daughter’s birthday and confined in a strange prison-hotel. For 15 years, Dae-su trains his body and his mind for one purpose: payback. When he’s released, Daes-u embarks upon a roaring rampage of violent retribution, bringing a young sushi chef named Mi-do for the ride. What follows is an epic revenge play tragedy that will take Dae-su to the absolute limit of sanity. Continuing the revenge theme of last month’s Point Blank, Graphic Content examines translation across national borders; a film import from South Korea and soon to be remade by Hollywood, in itself an adaptation of the acclaimed Japanese manga by Garon Tsuchiya and by Nobuaki Minegishi.

Magnetic Reconnection Chasing Ice Global Visions Encore

Graphic Content/// Curated by Matt Bowes and Erin Fraser, presented by Metro Cinema and Warp One Comics and Games. graphiccontent.org

A short film that contrasts the Northern Lights with decaying man-made debris littered throughout the landscape surrounding the town of Churchill, Manitoba in Canada’s Arctic. The film touches on the regenerative power of nature and the futility of mankind’s struggle against natural processes of decay. Featuring an original score by Jim O’Rourke (Sonic Youth, Wilco) a voice-over by Will Oldham (Matewan, Old Joy) and some of the best footage of the aurora borealis ever captured.

Wild Life Canada 2011, 14 min, Digital, Dir: Amanda Forbis, Wendy Tilby

Calgary, 1909. An Englishman moves to the Canadian frontier, but is singularly unsuited to it. His letters home are much sunnier than the reality. Intertitles compare his fate to that of a comet. Academy Award Nominated for Best Short.

The movie that postered a million walls, Brian De Palma’s take on Howard Hawkes’ OG classic paints a bleak portrait of the American dream through the story of Tony Montana, an ambitious Cuban ex-pat who ruthlessly rises to the top of the Miami drug world just to be destroyed by his own paranoia and jealousy. At it’s centre is an iconic performance by Al Pacino, who turns the acting dial to 11 and spews a stream of classic lines from Oliver Stone’s rich and expletive- riddled screenplay, while De Palma orchestrates it’s many bursts of violence with gusto. A cocainefueled epic, Scarface is one of the key films of the 80s and a true cult classic of the gangster genre. Admission is free for Students with valid ID.

Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters Global Visions Encore USA 2012, 78 min, Digital, Dir: Ben Shapiro 24 @ 1PM, 25 @ 7PM, 26 @ 9:15PM

An acclaimed photographer with the eye of a filmmaker, Gregory Crewdson has created some of the most gorgeously haunting pictures in the history of the medium. His meticulously composed, large-scale images are stunning narratives of small-town American life - moviescapes crystallized into a single frame. While the photographs are staged with crews that rival many feature film productions, Crewdson takes inspiration as much from his own dreams and fantasies as the worlds of Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch, Edward Hopper and Diane Arbus. Shot over a decade with unprecedented access, the film beautifully bares the artist’s process and it’s as mesmerizing and riveting as the images themselves.

Meet the Fokkens (Ouwehoeren) Global Visions Encore Netherlands 2011, 80 min, Digital, Dir: Gabrielle Provaas, Ron Schroder, Dutch w/ subtitles 24 @ 9:15PM, 25 @ 9PM

Meet Louise and Martine Fokkens: 69-year-old identical twins who have worked as prostitutes in Amsterdam’s red light district for over 50 years. Louise is newly retired due to arthritis (“I couldn’t get one leg over the other”), but Martine carries on, unable to support herself on a state pension. Between explicit scenes of her daily grind, she and Louise stroll the city in matching outfits, recounting hilariously ribald stories from a lifetime of sex work. An immensely affectionate portrait of two women who have seen and done everything (and everyone), Meet the Fokkens is a rollicking and revealing look at the world’s oldest profession in the 21st century.

In his screen debut, William Hurt plays Eddie Jessop, a scientist engaged in a series of sensory deprivation and psychedelic experiments, hell bent on discovering the essence of human existence and the “ultimate truth”, who finds himself unlocking his own genetic structure and reverting to pre-human state. The last film written by Paddy Chayesfky, and British director Ken Russell’s only foray into science-fiction, Altered States is a head-trip through evolutions back door, overflowing with hallucinatory and religious imagery, as well as a moving look at a marriage pushed to the brink by intellectual obsession.

Edmonton Opera/// With Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin wrapping up the 2012/13 season, Edmonton Opera is excited to screen Dr. Zhivago in partnership with Metro Cinema as part of the EO Film Series. Both the opera and the film tell stories of drama, beauty, romantic obsession and regrets that culminate in a heartbreaking chain of events. edmontonopera.com.

Dr Zhivago USA/ Italy 1965, 197 min, Digital, Dir: David Lean 27 @ 7PM

Breathtaking landscapes, multiple story arcs covering decades, grand historical themes, 197 minutes of emotional devastation – films don’t get much bigger than this. Based on Boris Pasternak’s famous novel, it is a long and complex journey through the chaos of the First World War and the Russian revolution, but at its heart it remains first and foremost a love story. When the passion between Lara (Julie Christie) and Yuri (Omar Sharif), unexpressed for years (an aching two hours in movie time!), is eventually surrendered to, the effect is of a whole nation finally breathing out. Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli Tour: Part 3 Our Studio Ghibli tour picks up again with three more beautifully animated films from Japan’s most beloved film institution: another fantasy classic from master Hayao Miyazaki, the fanciful spiritual sequel to last month’s Whisper of the Heart, and a rarely seen gem. Venturing further into the Ghibli back catalogue, we invite you to join us as we continue to explore new facets and motifs of such a rich cinematic body of work.

Castle in the Sky

Rust and Bone (De rouille et d’os)

Japan 1986, 126 min, 35mm, Dir: Hayao Miyazaki, Japanese w/ English Subtitles 28 @ 7PM, 31 @ 1:30PM

Long ago, mankind took to the skies in marvelous flying cities, but after a mysterious catastrophe only one remained: Laputa. Hidden inside of a continual thunderstorm, the eponymous castle in the sky was thought lost until Princess Sheeta (voiced by Keiko Yokozawa) and her new friend Pazu (voiced by Mayumi Tanaka) arrive there after a bout with air pirates. Once they arrive, they begin to uncover the mystery of why this one city remains. Another one of Studio Ghibli’s earliest successes, Castle in the Sky has all of the characteristic tropes of the classic Miyazaki film: a strong princess, fascinating aeronautical engineering, and strange creatures.

Ocean Waves Japan 1993, 72 min, 35mm, Dir: Tomomi Mochizuki, Japanese w/ English subtitles 29 @ 2PM, 31 @ 7PM,

While waiting at the train station, Taku Morisaki (voiced by Nobuo Tobita) catches sight of a familiar young woman. This chance encounter takes his memories back to high school, when his best friend Yutaka (voiced by Toshihko Seki) introduced him to a beautiful transfer student from Tokyo: Rikako. Both friends vie for the affections of the gorgeous new girl, whose pretty appearance hides a conceited, troublesome and melancholic character. The love triangle escalates as rumors circulate around the school and the boys’ friendship becomes strained. Rarely seen outside of Japan, Ocean Waves is the first Ghibli film directed by someone other than the studio founders. Adapted from Saeko Himuro’s best-selling novel, the film captures the teenage drama with the same artistry and attention to detail one expects from Ghibli’s acclaimed animation team.

turkey shoot/// A monthly celebration of aesthetically challenged films, hosted live by Dave Clarke and Jeff Page (with special sarcastic guests).

Mommie Dearest

USA 1981, 129 min, Digital, Dir: Frank Perry 28 @ 9:30PM

This 80s camp classic features Faye “she’s my sister (slap) she’s my daughter” Dunaway as Joan Crawford, the powerful and glamorous Golden Age actress who personally destroyed the wire hanger industry. Based upon the questionably credible autobiography of Christina Crawford, this film has caused Dave and Jeff to mysteriously remember abuse suffered at the hands of … sob ... films like this. Wire Hangers Forbidden!

France/ Belgium 2012, 120 min, Digital, Dir: Jacques Audiard, French w/ subtitles 29 @ 4PM, 30 @ 7PM, 31 @ 4PM, APRIL 1 @ 8:45PM

The Cat Returns Japan 2002, 75 min, 35mm, Dir: Hiroyuki Morita, English dubbed 29 @ 9:30PM, 30 @ 2:15PM, APRIL 1 @ 7PM,

Today just became really bizarre for student Haru Yoshioka (voiced by Anne Hathaway); saving a cat from being run over by a delivery truck was one thing, but now it turns out that the cat in question is the Prince of the Cat Kingdom, and Haru is to be married to him! But she hasn’t even had a boyfriend yet...and she’s a human; how is that even supposed to WORK? And why are her ears becoming so furry and pointed? Featuring the return of the stylish, top-hatted feline Baron von Gikkingen (The Princess Bride’s Cary Elwes), The Cat Returns feels like the funny and adventurous novel started by the main character of Studio Ghibli’s Whisper of the Heart.

West of Memphis New Zealand/ USA 2012, 147 min, Digital, Dir: Amy Berg 29 @ 6:45PM, 30 @ 4pm, 30 @ 9:30PM, 31 @ 8:45PM, APR 1 @ 1PM,

West of Memphis is an examination of a failure of justice in Arkansas. The documentary tells the hitherto unknown story behind an extraordinary and desperate fight to bring the truth to light. Told and made by those who lived it, the filmmakers’ unprecedented access to the inner workings of the defense, allows the film to show the investigation, research and appeals process in a way that has never been seen before; revealing shocking and disturbing new information about a case that still haunts the American South.

Jacques Audiard follows up his electrifying Un prophète with this tender/brutal Côte d’Azur-set drama (inspired by Canadian writer Craig Davidson’s like-titled short story collection). Ali (Matthias Schoenaerts), a damaged - both physically and socially - boxer who’s moved to Antibes with his five-year-old son and taken up residence with his sister. He cadges odd jobs as a bouncer and one day he rescues the lovely Stephanie (Marie Cotillard) from a brawl, takes her home, and despite their obvious differences, makes a connection. Stephanie is a whale trainer at the local Marineland where, soon after, she suffers an awful accident that leaves her a double amputee. Bypassing her boyfriend and usual circle, she calls Ali… (VIFF)

Miami Connection USA 1987, 83 min, Digital, Dir: Y.K. Kim, Woo-Sang Par 29 @ 11PM, APRIL 1 @ 4PM

The year is 1987. Motorcycle ninjas tighten their grip on Florida’s narcotics trade, viciously annihilating anyone who dares move in on their turf. Multi-national martial arts rock band Dragon Sound have had enough, and embark on a roundhouse wreck-wave of crime-crushing justice. When not chasing beach bunnies or performing their hit song “Against the Ninja,” Mark (kung-fu master/inspirational speaker Y.K. Kim) and the boys are kicking and chopping at the drug world’s smelliest underbelly. It’ll take every ounce of their blood and courage, but Dragon Sound can’t stop until they’ve completely destroyed the dealers, the drunk bikers, the kill-crazy ninjas, the middle-aged thugs, the “stupid cocaine”...and the entire MIAMI CONNECTION!!!
