The Black Dog Freehouse ~ 10425 Whyte Ave.
MAY 2013 SCHEDULE The Room USA 2003, 99 min, 35mm, Dir: Tommy Wiseau 3 @ 11PM
Ginger & Rosa UK/ Denmark/ Canada/ Croatia 2012, 90 min, Digital, Dir: Sally Potter 3, 5, 9 @ 7PM, 4 @ 2:30PM, 4 @ 9PM, 5 @ 12:45PM, 6, 7 @ 9:15PM, 12 @ 12:15PM
Cutting class to engage in passionate discussions about politics, gender, sex, religion and hairstyles, Ginger (Elle Fanning) and Rosa (Alice Englert) seem to be inseparable companions, growing up in London in the 1960s. But their friendship falters when Rosa falls under the spell of Ginger’s father, Roland, a charismatic freethinker. Ginger assuages her sense of betrayal by involving herself in the antinuclear movement as the Cuban Missile Crisis seizes the world in the grip of nuclear anxiety. The obliteration of her home life and treasured camaraderie is mirrored in the threat of total annihilation. In both cases, the personal and the global, the world doesn’t end. But nothing will ever be quite the same again. “Potter strikes a perfect balance with her two central characters, making Ginger & Rosa at once emblems of Cold War youth and precisely defined individuals in their own right.” (TIFF Cameron Bailey)
Oh hi Johnny, I didn’t know it was you. Join us for our popular monthly screening of Tommy Wiseau’s masterpiece, The Room, widely agreed to be the “Citizen Kane of bad movies”. You’re my favourite customer! Thanks a lot! Bye. Please note: Audience Participation is encouraged, within reason.
The Greenest Building USA 2011, 57 min, Digital, Dir: June Turville 6 @ 7PM
Presented by the Alberta Chapter YEG Emerging Green Builders. Is demolition in the name of sustainability really the best use of natural, social, and economic resources? Or, like the urban renewal programs of the 1960’s, will this well-intentioned planning result in devastating environmental and cultural consequences? Through five prototype projects, ranging in scope from a tenant improvement, to a Main Street America project to a highly successful renovation the film explores the myth that a “green building” is necessarily a new building and demonstrates how renovation and adaptive reuse of existing structures fully achieves the sustainability movement’s “triple bottom line” economic, social, and ecological balance. From electronic musician-turned-director/ writer/editor/cinematographer/composer Quentin Dupieux (Rubber, Steak) Wrong is a willfully surreal comedy, which made its world premiere at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, about a man’s frantic search for his kidnapped dog and the strange characters he encounters along the way. Dolph Springer wakes up one morning to realize he has lost the love of his life, his dog, Paul. During his quest to get Paul (and his life) back, Dolph radically changes the lives of others. In his journey to find Paul, Dolph may lose something even more vital – his mind.
USA 2012, 92 min, Digital, Dir: Jay Bulger 7 @ 7PM (Special live music set by Gary Debussy @ 6:30PM)
Very few films can say their opening scene involves the main character breaking the director’s nose, but as this film’s title suggests Ginger Baker is a man to approach with caution. A madman and a genius best known for his work with Cream and Blind Faith, Baker is often lauded as the inventor of rock ’n’ roll drumming. Beware of Mr. Baker now finds him living in his fortified compound in South Africa, desperate for cash... living with his 29-year-old internet bride and 39 polo ponies. Featuring interviews with his ex-wives, his children and many of the greatest living musicians who know him (such as Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Charlie Watts, Mickey Hart, Carlos Santana, Femi Kuti, Neil Peart and Marky Ramone) this is a look back at a tumultuous career through explosive interviews with one of rock’s greatest characters. (Charlotte Cook) Encore May 11 @ 4PM
Marilyn Monroe invented her public persona at the expense of concealing a private side known only to her close confidants. Fifty years after her death, her creation still blazes brightly in our cultural imagination, while the creator continues to lurk in the shadows. Drawing on never before seen personal papers, diaries and letters, director Liz Garbus worked with acclaimed actresses to evoke the multiple aspects of the real Marilyn passion, ambition, soul - searching, power and fear - in an absorbing and astonishing portrait. These documents, brought to life in this film by some of our contemporary icons and stars, give us a new and revelatory understanding of Monroe, revealing her carefully guarded inner life. “A heady cocktail of journalistic rigor and show business flair ... just right for its blazingly famous, endlessly enigmatic subject.” (The NY Times) MOTHER’S DAY 2-for-1: COME TO A MOVIE ON SUN, MAY 12, AND BRING SOMEBODY’S MOTHER ALONG FOR FREE! Eating Garlic and Shoes: Two Films by Les Blank
USA 1979, 22 min, Digital, Dir: Les Blank
This film documents a wonderfully strange moment in the history of documentaries: Werner Herzog vowed to eat his shoe if Errol Morris completed his film Gates of Heaven; this film by Les Blank documents Herzog’s entire shoe-eating visit, to keep his promise. First, Herzog stews his shoes for five hours at Chez Panisse, then eats one onstage to accompany a screening. Throughout, Herzog comments on cinema and culture, including his famous assertion: if you want to make a film, steal a camera!
Nighttime in Paris the cats come out to play. Dino is by day young Zoe’s pet, but by night he works with Nico (Steven Blum), a cat burglar with a surprisingly soft side. When Dino brings Zoe a bracelet from one of his nighttime adventures, her police detective mother, Jeanne (Marcia Gay Harden) becomes suspicious of the cat’s evening dalliances. It all comes to head one night when the city’s biggest criminal outfit are out for their biggest heist yet. Soon, Dino brings Zoe and Nico together and they are on the run through the streets of Paris from mob boss Victor Costa and his cronies. A Cat in Paris is a hand-drawn animated neo-noir fit for the whole family! With:

The Cat Came Back
11 @ 7PM
This duet of films is intended to honor the life and work of documentary filmmaker Les Blank, whose films celebrate the music and food of American regional cultures, from polka to the blues, from garlic to tea, and from Dizzy Gillespie to Lightnin’ Hopkins. Blank’s films are highlighted by his obvious affection for the individuals he follows, as well as the music they play and the food they eat. Les Blank passed away in early April. Please enjoy these films as much as we do, and roast some garlic and raise a glass for Les.
A Cat in Paris
Food culture today is broadly accepting, with hundred mile diets, celebrity chefs, omni-present cooking shows, and live-tweeting of meals. But this was not always the case. Les Blank’s 1980 film is a snapshot of American food culture in transition. Mainstream culture and mouthwash ads demonized ethnic foods as ‘smelly’, which prompted earnest hippies to put on garlic-shaped hats, macho Mediterranean men to sing loudly, and various cooks to cook joyfully in celebration of garlic, the stinking rose at the centre of flavourful cuisine. The cooking on display ranges from soul food, stir fry and Mediterranean cooking to the emerging California cuisine of Chez Panisse. Garlic is as Good as Ten Mothers highlights Les Blank’s greatest gift: sharing the pure joy of life through cinema.
The Harry S. Miller folk song comes to life in this charming animated adaptation. Mr. Johnson tries to rid himself of a small yet destructive yellow cat that just will not leave his home. As he grows increasingly desperate, he takes increasingly destructive measures, but the cat just keeps coming back. Children 12 and under are free!

Enjoy the films, Metro Cinema’s Programming Team
Also this month, a tribute to influential filmmaker Les Blank (1935 - 2013), the beginning of The Piano Film Series, in partnership with the Art Gallery of Alberta, screenings of the winners of the FAVA Awards of Excellence, and the annual Dreamspeakers Film Festival.
However, what sets Metro Cinema apart from most theatres, is our dedication to continue screening 35mm film. Our final installment of the Studio Ghibli Tour is a good example of the new realities of cinema exhibition: we’ll be presenting newly struck 35mm film prints of My Neighbors the Yamadas by Isao Takahata, and Spirited Away by Hayao Miyazaki. We’ll also be presenting the latest Studio Ghibli film, From Up on Poppy Hill by directed by Hayao’s son Goro Miyazaki, which will be screening from DCP.
Some of our DCPs this month include new titles like Ginger & Rosa by Sally Potter, Wrong by Quentin Dupieux and Spring Breakers by Harmony Korine; alongside classics like The Tin Drum, Taxi Driver and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and the Canadian theatrical premiere of Unclaimed, by Edmonton filmmaker Michael Jorgenson. All are screening from DCP.
The cinema exhibition industry has spent the last few years converting to Digital Cinema presentation, and Metro Cinema has now fully entered this brave new world, with the installation of the last part of our Digital Cinema system, we are now able to screen DCPs (Digital Cinema Packages).

Renamed Sen, the young girl helps the mysterious patrons of the establishment, which include the enigmatic No-Face and a river spirit named Haku. Will Chihiro be able to save her parents from the slop? Potentially Hayao Miyazaki’s greatest work, Spirited Away smashed box office records in Japan upon its release, garnering the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Fest. My Neighbors The Yamadas (Hôhokekyo tonari no Yamada-kun) Japan 1999, 111 min, 35 mm, Dir. Isao Takahata, English dubbed 18 @ 2PM, 19 @ 2:45PM
Hey, remember the time the neighbors lost their youngest child at the mall for an entire afternoon? Or when their son accidentally wore his pyjamas to school? Or how they ended up singing to a motorcycle gang in order to avoid getting into a fight? Little moments make up the lives of the six members of the Yamada family (including a dog). From flights of fancy to the crushingly mundane, their triumphs and failures are chronicled in acclaimed director Isao Takahata’s My Neighbors the Yamadas. Atypical of Studio Ghibli’s signature output in both style and story, Neighbors recalls the feeling of reading through a collection of newspaper strips brought to life with flowing, simple line art and sophisticated watercolours. Come catch up with the neighbors, four comic book panels at a time.

hysteria UK 2011, 100 min, Digital, Dir: tanya wexler 22 @ 6:45PM
What do women want? Well, science may debate that for years, but Hysteria provides a very entertaining answer in the form of a historical romp through early psychology. Based on the story of a young British doctor who essentially invented the first vibrator, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Felicity Jones play Victorian-era sisters, who are daughters of the prominent physician Dr. Dalrymple. Into their lives comes young doctor Mortimer Granville (Hugh Dancy) whose life work has become focused on women’s issues, including the all-encompassing diagnosis “hysteria,” for which he is experimenting with therapeutic “pelvic massage” treatments. Presented by The Traveling Tickle Trunk and Flurt! Magazine in celebration of Masturbation month. There will be a short panel discussion on the history of the vibrator after the film. TURKEY SHOOT/// A monthly celebration of aesthetically challenged films, hosted live by Dave Clarke and Jeff Page (with special sarcastic guests).
Jaws: the Revenge USA 1987, 89 min, Digital, Dir: Joseph Sargent 23 @ 9PM
Turkey Shoot icon Michael Caine returns as Hoagie Newcombe, a Bahamas airplane pilot who falls for Ellen Brody. A sweet love story, except for the great white shark that has stalked Ellen all the way from Massachusetts. Yes, it’s that Ellen Brody, sexy wife of Chief Brody, who famously blew up a shark. Apparently, sharks have a highly developed sense of justice, and one can’t blow up a shark without his family paying the ultimate price – shark vengeance. Clearly, this movie wreaks revenge on evolutionary theory.
thelonious Monk: Straight, no chaser USA 1988, 90 min, Digital, Dir: charlotte Zwerin 25 @ 4PM
This documentary of the late jazz great Thelonius Monk (1917-1982) uses footage taken from 14 hours of European concert performances filmed in 1967-68 by Christian Blackwood. From his childhood in New York City’s San Juan Hill, Monk grew up to become one of the most innovative jazz pianists of all time. Monk ushered in the bebop era of the 1940s and influenced such contemporary greats as Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Interviews with Monk’s manager Harry Colomby and Monk’s son and namesake shed light on the character of the jazz giant. Executive producer Clint Eastwood got the idea for the project while researching the life of Charlie Parker for his film Bird. (Dan Pavlides, Rovi)
taxi Driver USA 1976, 113 min, Digital, Dir: Martin Scorcese 24 @ 11:15PM, 26 @ 9PM
“All the animals come out at night” -- and one of them is a cabby about to snap. In Martin Scorsese’s classic 1970s drama, insomniac ex-Marine Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) works the nightshift, driving his cab throughout decaying mid-’70s New York City, wishing for a “real rain” to wash the “scum” off the neon-lit streets. Chronically alone, Travis cannot connect with anyone. He becomes increasingly paranoid and begins to condition (and arm) himself for his imagined destiny, a mission that mutates from assassinating Betsy’s (Cybil Shepard) candidate, to violently “saving” teen hooker Iris (Jodie Foster) from her pimp. Travis’ bloodbath turns him into a media hero; but has it truly calmed his mind? (AllMovieGuide)
Dreamspeakers film festival May 29 - June 1
When the first Dene filmmaker returned to Canada’s Northwest Territories, his people had no word for his new art. They called it “Dreamtalking”. When you make films a Dene elder said you are speaking your dreams. In May and June the Metro Cinema becomes the site of an international gathering of our own Dreamtalkers: filmmakers and artists from around the world sharing their common bond, their stories and their dreams . This year’s festival features representations from seven countries, public workshops and panel discussions. For a full schedule visit: dreamspeakers.org.
the tin Drum west Germany 1979, 163 min, Dir: Vollker Schlöndorff, German w/ subtitles 24, JUne 2, 6 @ 6:30PM, 25 @ 8:45PM, 26 @ 12:45PM
Danzig, 1924. Oskar Matzerath is born with an intellect beyond his infancy. As he witnesses the hypocrisy of adulthood and society, he rejects both, and, at his third birthday, refuses to grow older. Caught in a state of perpetual childhood, Oskar lashes out with piercing screams and frantic poundings on his tin drum, while the unheeding world marches towards the madness and folly of WWII. Honored with the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Volker Schlöndorff’s The Tin Drum has now been restored to its director’s original vision, with twenty minutes of footage unseen since the film was cut at the behest of its distributor in 1979. The result is a visionary adaptation of Günter Grass’s acclaimed novel, an unforgettable fantasia of surreal imagery, striking eroticism, and unflinching satire. (Janus)
CULT CINEMA/// A monthly series of eccentric classics curated by Jeff Noel.
the beguiled USA 1971, 105 mins, Digital, Dir: Don Siegel 28 @ 7PM
In this Southern Gothic tale set in Civil War era Louisiana, Clint Eastwood stars as John McBurney, a Yankee soldier wounded in Confederate territory and taken in to mend by the residents of a boarding school for girls. While helping him evade capture the head mistress and her girls each become enamoured with him, leading to a deadly elixir of sexual tensions. Produced in the same year that frequent collaborators Don Siegel and Eastwood would find their biggest success in Dirty Harry, The Beguiled offers an entirely different and unique set of pleasures.
