MAY 2014 SCHEDULE Make Mine Hollywood: A Selection from the Golden Age/// Metro’s celebration of some of the finest of the “The Golden Age of Hollywood” continues this month with four significant films from an era that represents a spectrum of genres, themes, and styles, and captures the essence of Hollywood Classic.

Citizen Kane USA 1941, 119 min, Digital, Dir: Orson Welles 1 @ 6:45PM, 4 @ 1PM

Orson Welles was only 25 when he directed this masterpiece, and it remains one of the most phenomenal motion pictures ever made. Welles, of course, also stars as Charles Foster Kane, a ruthless man who built a newspaper publishing empire and a character supposedly modeled after the reallife William Randolph Hearst. Trailblazing in so many respects, from Gregg Toland’s complex camera and lighting to Bernard Herrmann’s score to one of the finest ensemble casts ever assembled.

The Maltese Falcon USA 1941, 100 min, Digital, Dir: John Huston 1 @ 9:15PM, 8 @ 7PM

USA 1950, 138 min, Digital, Dir: Joseph L. Mankiewicz 2 @ 6:45PM, 3 @ 4PM, 5 @ 9:15PM

Seemingly timid fan Eve (Anne Baxter) ingratiates herself into Broadway mega-star Bette Davis’ inner circle in this backstage, backstabbing masterpiece by Joseph L. Mankiewicz. Eve wastes no time stealing Davis’ spotlight and man (Gary Merrill), but Davis takes nothing lying down. A superb supporting cast (George Sanders, Marilyn Monroe, Thelma Ritter and Celeste Holm) brings New York’s theater set to life. “Fasten your seatbelts...it’s going to be a bumpy night.”

This month, the Provincial Archives of Alberta is pleased to continue its presentation of film clips related to Alberta wildlife.. From bears to sage grouse, from the mountains to the plains, we hope you enjoy these segments featuring the province’s wide variety of animal life in its natural habitat.

Adapted from Dashiell Hammett’s 1930 novel, The Maltese Falcon is a classic mystery with a masterfully drawn group of characters involved in a dangerous and double-crossing hunt for a bejeweled golden falcon statue. Humphrey Bogart plays Sam Spade, a hired detective who shares an office with his partner, Miles Archer. Unknown to Archer, they also share a woman – Spade is having an affair with his wife. Suspenseful, labyrinthine, and brilliantly cast, it’s one of the most influential film noirs -- as well as a showcase for Bogart at his finest.

Finding Vivian Maier USA 2013, 83 min, Digital, Dirs: John Maloof, Charlie Siskel 2, 7 @ 9:30PM, 4 @ 9:15PM

On the Waterfront All About Eve

Provincial Archives Pre-show///

USA 1954, 108 min, Digital, Dir: Elia Kazan 3 @ 7PM, 4 @ 3:30PM, 6 @ 9:15PM

Marlon Brando gives the performance of his career as the tough prize fighter turned longshoreman Terry Malloy in this masterpiece of urban poetry. A raggedly emotional tale of individual failure and social corruption, the film follows Terry’s deepening moral crisis as he must decide whether to remain loyal to the mob-connected union boss Johnny Friendly and his right-hand man, Terry’s brother, Charley, as the authorities close in on them. Driven by the vivid, naturalistic direction of Elia Kazan and savory, streetwise dialogue by Budd Schulberg, On the Waterfront was an instant sensation, winning eight Academy Awards. (Criterion)

Vivian Maier’s photographs seemed destined for obscurity, lost among the clutter of the countless objects she’d collected throughout her life. Instead, these images have shaken the world of street photography and irrevocably changed the life of the man who brought them to the public eye. This film brings to life the interesting turns and travails of the improbable saga of John Maloof’s discovery of Vivian Maier, unraveling the mysterious tale through her documentary films, photographs, odd collections, and personal accounts from the people who knew her. What started as a blog to show her work quickly became a viral sensation in the photography world. Photographs destined for the trash heap now live in gallery exhibitions, books, and this film.

Reel Family Cinema/// Saturday matinees for the whole family! Curated by Erin Fraser and Laura O’Connor.

Crime Watch/// From thriller to comedy and classic to contemporary, Crime Watch offers a diverse and provocative glimpse into the cinematic criminal world. Curated by Laura O’Connor.

Jodorowsky’s Dune

Heavenly Creatures Uncut New Zealand 1994, 111 min, Digital, Dir: Peter Jackson 5 @ 7PM

The Emperor’s New Groove USA 2000, 78 min, Digital, Dir: Mark Dindal 3 @ 2PM

Self-centered Kuzco (David Spade), the young emperor of an Incan nation, always gets what he wants. Including the scenic hilltop where Pacha (John Goodman) and his family have lived for generations. Not surprisingly, Kuzco’s attitudes have earned the hostility of many of his subjects, including Yzma (Eartha Kitt), a sorceress who wants to seize power away from the emperor after he relieved her of her royal duties. Yzma and her musclebound assistant Kronk (Patrick Warburton) hatch a plan to poison Kuzco and take the throne, but thanks to a mistake on Kronk’s part, Kuzco is turned into a talking llama. Upon discovering the llama’s true self, Pacha offers to help resolve the Emperor’s problem if he promises to give up the scenic hilltop. Free Admission for Children under 12!

After winning a cult following for several offbeat and darkly witty gore films, New Zealand director Peter Jackson abruptly shifted gears with this stylish, compelling, and ultimately disturbing tale of two teenage girls whose friendship begins to fuel an ultimately fatal obsession. Pauline (Melanie Lynskey) and Juliet (Kate Winslet) become quick friends when they discover they share the same tastes in art, literature, and music. Together they begin to construct an elaborate fantasy world named Borovnia, which exists first in stories and then in models made of clay. The more they dream of Borovnia, the more the two find themselves retreating into this fantastical world of art, adventure, and Gothic romance as they slowly drift away from reality... Remarkably enough, Heavenly Creatures is based on a true story; in real life, Juliet grew up to become mystery novelist Anne Perry. (Mark Deming, Rovi)

Music Docs/// A monthly film series featuring music documentaries, from classic to contemporary. Curated by Tim Rechner, and co-presented with CJSR and Blackbyrd Myoozik.

DEDfest///

The Return of the Living Dead USA 1985, 91 min, Digital, Dir: Dan O’Bannon 9 @ 11PM

The Great Beauty (La grande bellezza) Italy/ France 2013, 146 min, Digital, Dir: Paolo Sorrentino, Italian w/ subtitles 3, 8 @ 9:15PM, 7 @ 6:45PM

Winner of the 2014 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, The Great Beauty reunites provocative Italian auteur Paolo Sorrentino with star Toni Servillo and evokes Fellini’s classic La Dolce Vita with its sardonic odyssey into Rome’s high-class nightlife. Having long since abandoned his ideals along with his artistic ambitions, aging, cynical, worldweary journalist Jep Gambardella (Servillo) drifts through the social whirl of the Eternal City, seeking to keep the emptiness at bay through compulsive partying, shallow conversations and casual sex, while the timeless beauty of the city’s monuments and statues acts as a wordless reminder of a glorious past now lost.

As the Palaces Burn USA 2014, 121 min, Digital, Dir: Don Argott 6 @ 6:45PM, Encore: 17 @ 8:45PM

A feature-length documentary that originally sought to follow the band Lamb of God and their fans throughout the world, to demonstrate how music ties us together when we can’t find any other common bond. However, during the filming process in 2012, the story abruptly took a dramatic turn, bringing the band into a Kafkaesque nightmare, when lead singer Randy Blythe was arrested on charges of manslaughter, blamed for the death of one of their young fans in the Czech Republic. What followed was a heart-wrenching courtroom drama that left fans, friends, and curious onlookers around the world on the edge of their seats.

DEDfest is proud to bring back to the big screen one of our all time favourite films, 1985’s The Return of the Living Dead! Directed by Dan O’Bannon, writer of Alien, this movie perfectly blends horror, humour, and a brilliant punk rock soundtrack to create one of the greatest late night party movies ever made. When a bumbling pair of employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to re-animate as they go on a rampage seeking their favorite food, brains! Amazing one-liners, great gore gags, and a memorable graveyard dance by scream queen Linnea Quigley makes this is one event not to be missed!

Imagine being able to watch as Edison turned on the first light bulb, or as Franklin received his first jolt of electricity. For the first time, a film gives audiences a front row seat to a significant and inspiring scientific breakthrough as it happens. Particle Fever follows six brilliant scientists during the launch of the Large Hadron Collider, marking the start-up of the biggest and most expensive experiment in the history of the planet, pushing the edge of human innovation. As they seek to unravel the mysteries of the universe, 10,000 scientists from over 100 countries joined forces in pursuit of a single goal: to recreate conditions that existed just moments after the Big Bang and find the Higgs boson, potentially explaining the origin of all matter. But our heroes confront an even bigger challenge: have we reached our limit in understanding why we exist?

opera in cinema/// From the Royal Opera House in London, Metro presents cinematic encores of the season’s best live productions. Co-presented by the Edmonton Opera

Bizet’s Carmen UK 2013, 185 min, Digital, Singers: Anna Caterina Antonacci, Jonas Kaufmann, Ildebrando D’Arcangelo, Norah Amsellem, Sung in French with English subtitles. 18 @ 2PM

The music of Carmen has been widely acclaimed for its brilliance of melody, harmony, atmosphere and orchestration, and for the skill with which Bizet musically represented the emotions and suffering of his characters. Spanish heat and gypsy passion arrive on the Royal Opera stage with this darkly passionate and sumptuously exotic reading of one of the world’s favourite operas. 19th-century Seville is brought alive in this dramatic story which tells of the downfall of Don José, a naïve soldier who is seduced by the wiles of the fiery Gypsy, Carmen. José abandons his childhood sweetheart and deserts from his military duties, yet loses Carmen’s love to the glamorous toreador Escamillo, after which José kills her in a jealous rage. Bizet’s irresistible score drives the tragedy forward, in this powerful landmark staging of a musical masterpiece. Opera in three acts with one interval. Composer: Georges Bizet. Conductor: Antonio Pappano. Special admissions in effect: $17 Adults, $14 Seniors/ Students. No Metro Passes.

let Metro be your own personal time machine as you take a cinematic journey with us during this lovely month of May.

and the time-tripping doesn’t stop there. out of the past and up to the present day, Metro is rolling through the decades, cinema-stye, with films that represent every decade from the 40’s (citizen kane & the Maltese falcon) to present day (nymphomaniac: volume i & ii, particle fever, and as the palaces burn). titles also from the 50’s (all about eve and on the waterfront), 70’s (harold & Maude, Jeremiah Johnson, and the rocky horror picture show), 80’s (Ms. 45 and the return of the living dead), 90’s (heavenly creatures and twelve Monkeys) and 2000’s (the incredibles and transamerica).

we continue rolling into spring with two noticeable themes – film festivals and time travel! global visions film festival is back (May 8 - 15) along with the dreamspeakers film festival (May 28 - 31). Metro cinema is thrilled to again play host to both these showcases of exciting new work, fresh (and often local!) talent, and unique voices. and while you’re travelling around the world through these festivals, we also invite you to time travel with chris Marker. this month, we’re visiting the past (and the future) through two outstanding films representing the work of this iconic french filmmaker during the 60s: le joli mai (the lovely Month of May) and la Jetée (the pier).

Time Travel with Chris Marker/// Chris Marker (July 29, 1921 – July 29, 2012), was a French filmmaker (film essayist), writer, photographer, poet, and multimedia artist who challenged moviegoers, philosophers, and himself for many years with his complex queries about time and memory. The Metro invites you to travel back in time with the ground-breaking and visionary Marker to Paris in 1962, the year of possibly his most creative outburst of filmmaking. While in the thick of starting and stopping time itself with his sci-fi masterpiece La Jetée, Marker was also gathering 55 hours of off-the-cuff footage (which became La Joli Mai) from every corner of Paris in collaboration with cinematographer Pierre Lhomme. La Jetée is not only unlike any other film in the history of cinema but also endlessly influential to other artists - Terry Gilliam’s Twelve Monkeys being the best-known homage (screening here as a companion piece with La Jetée).

La Jetée (The Pier) France 1962, 27 min, Digital, Dir: Chris Marker, French 24 @ 7PM (Encores first week of June)

Marker’s La Jetée is one of the most influential, radical science-fiction films ever made, a tale of time travel told in poetic still images. In the film, a survivor of a postapocalyptic Paris is obsessed with distant and disconnected memories of a pier, the image of a mysterious woman, and a man’s death. Scientists experimenting in time travel choose him for their studies, and the man travels back in time to contact the mysterious woman, and discovers that the man’s death at the pier was his own. One of cinema’s most elegant and remarkable meditations, the emotional and visual power of this film will haunt you well into your own future.

With/

Twelve Monkeys USA 1995, 129 min, Digital, Dir: Terry Gilliam 24 @ 7PM (Encores first week of June)

La Joli Mai (The Lovely Month of May) France 1963, 145 min, Digital, Dir: Chris Marker, Pierre Lhomme, English narration w/ subtitled responses 19, 25 @ 1:30PM

A marvellous, highly influential examination of a specific time and place: Paris in May 1962, going through its first spring of peace since 1939. The basic method is simple: Marker and his colleagues (unseen) elicit comments on work, money, happiness, etc, from a cross-section of Parisians. But these personal thoughts are firmly and evocatively placed within a wider socio-political context, as the film proceeds to show footage of police charges, rioters, strikers, and so forth. What distinguishes the film most, however, is its wit, both verbal and visual, so that it is simultaneously illuminating and funny. Marker’s pioneering documentary style, the essay film, which featured a subjective viewpoint from the filmmakers was introduced to the world with this film.

James Cole (Bruce Willis), is a prisoner of the state in the year 2035 who can earn parole if he agrees to travel back in time and thwart a devastating plague. The virus has wiped out most of the Earth’s population and the remainder live underground because the air is poisonous. Returning to the year 1990, six years before the start of the plague, Cole is soon imprisoned in a psychiatric facility because his warnings sound like mad ravings. There he meets a scientist (Madeleine Stowe) and Goines the mad son (Brad Pitt) of an eminent virologist. Cole is returned to 2035, and finally ends up at his intended destination in 1996. He discovers graffiti by an apparent animal rights group called the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, but as he delves into the mystery, he hears voices, loses his bearings, and doubts his own sanity. He must figure out if Goines, who seems to be a raving lunatic, holds the key to the puzzle. (Michael Betzold, Rovi)

The Incredibles USA 2004, 115 min, Digital, Dir. Brad Bird 20 @ 7PM

Times have been tough for Mr. Incredible, aka Bob Parr (Craig T. Nelson), as a government crackdown on all caped crusaders has led him to a crushingly boring job, an ever-expanding waistline, and a life of obscurity in the suburbs. That all changes when he’s called in for a series of secret assignments dealt out by a mysterious benefactor (Jason Lee). When Mr. Incredible disappears after one of these missions, his wife, the former heroine known as Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), must team up with his gifted kids Dash and Violet to crack the case and bring the culprit in for justice, one last time. The Incredibles is a love letter to wthe atomic era aesthetics of comics’ glory days and the greatest depiction of superhero family dynamics ever seen on film. Birdemic 2: The Resurrection USA 2013, 90 min, Digital, Dir: James Nguyen 21 @ 7PM

The self proclaimed Master of Romantic Thrillers returns with the sequel to a movie that was neither romantic nor thrilling. Exploding eagles return to taunt Rod and Nathalie, the first movie’s characteristic free characters, while the unfortunately named Rick Camp returns as Dr. Jones, the harbinger of bird doom doom. If the poster is anything to go by, the poster is probably where Mr. Nguyen spent his budget. We hope that the eagles have learned to fly and explode in less predictable patterns this time around, thereby winning.

Jeremiah Johnson USA 1972, 108 min, Digital, Dir: Sydney Pollack 27 @ 7PM

Set in the mid19th century, after the Civil War, the film centres on a solitary man (Robert Redford) as he becomes disillusioned with the ways of his civilization and the ravages of war, and sets out determined to survive in the Rocky Mountain wilderness by himself. “At the time, Jeremiah Johnson was perfectly in sync with the prevailing counter cultural attitudes and the film’s environmental themes (close to the heart of Redford) and its anti establishment, Thoreau - like message which struck a chord with audiences and made it a hit.” (Turner Classics). Based on the novel Mountain Man by Vardis Fisher and filmed on location in picturesque Utah. $2 off for AGA members. Maina

Cult Cinema/// Ms. 45 USA 1981, 80 min, Digital, Dir: Abel Ferrara 21 @ 9:15PM

This month Bizarro delves into the depths of exploitation and presents a film from one of the more reviled sub genres: Rape Revenge. Ms.45 is a defining film for this sick little segment of cinema, rivaling the likes of I Spit on Your Grave or Last House on the Left. An early film by Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant, King of New York), Ms.45 tells the story of Thana, a beautiful mute seamstress who is driven to the brink after being assaulted brutally twice in the same day and of the bloody trail of revenge that meets all those who cross her path. Co-presented by Crime Watch.

A monthly series of eccentric classics curated by Jeff Noel.

Harold & Maude USA 1971, 91 min, Digital, Dir: Hal Ashby 27 @ 9:15PM

Hal Ashby’s cult classic tells the story of Harold (Bud Cort), an affluent but depressed young man whose primary interests include faking suicides for the benefit of his indifferent mother, and attending funerals. He recognizes seventy-nine- year-old Maude (Ruth Gordon) as a fellow funeral-goer, but of a completely different persuasion; a free spirit celebrating life at every turn. They hit it off, and what follows is one of the most unusual and touching love stories ever filmed, set to a soundtrack of songs by Cat Stevens.

Dreamspeakers Film Festival: May 28 - 31
