october 2013 SCHEDULE Provincial Archives Pre-show/// This month, the Provincial Archives of Alberta (PAA) features clips taken from home movies. Usually shot on 8mm or Super 8mm film, home movies provide a picture of the personal side of history: families celebrating birthdays, people travelling, or even baby’s first steps. Far from boring, home movies on film are intimate slices of what was important to families and individuals. If you have your own home movies and you’re wondering how to preserve or donate them, please consider attending the Home Movie Day event at the Provincial Archives from 12 - 4 pm on Oct 19. This event will provide the opportunity for people to see and share their own home movies and chat with archives staff about the preservation of film. For info: 780 427- 1750.

Music Docs/// A monthly film series featuring music documentaries, from classic to contemporary. Curated by Tim Rechner, and co-presented with CJSR and Blackbyrd Myoozik.

The Three Colours Trilogy: Blue, White, and Red This boldly cinematic trio of stories about love and loss, from Krzysztof Kies´lowski was a defining event of the art-house boom of the 1990s. The films are named for the colours of the French flag and stand for the tenets of the French Revolution - liberty, equality, and fraternity - but that hardly begins to explain their enigmatic beauty and rich humanity. Set in Paris, Warsaw, and Geneva, and ranging from tragedy to comedy, Blue, White, and Red (Kies´lowski’s final film) examine with artistic clarity a group of ambiguously interconnected people experiencing profound personal disruptions. Marked by intoxicating France/ Poland/ Switzerland 1993, cinematography and stirring performances by 98 min, 35mm, Dir: Krzysztof Kies ślowski, such actors as Juliette Binoche, Julie Delpy, French w/ subtitles Irène Jacob, and Jean-Louis Trintignant, Kies´lowski’s Three Colours is a benchmark of 4 @ 7PM, 7 @ 9:30PM, 14 @ 1PM contemporary cinema. (Criterion) In the devastating first film of the trilogy, Juliette Binoche gives a tour de force performance as Julie, a woman reeling from the tragic death of her husband and young daughter. But Blue is more than just a blistering study of grief; it’s also a tale of liberation, as Julie attempts to free herself from the past while confronting truths about the life of her late husband, a composer. Shot in sapphire tones by Sławomir Idziak, and set to an extraordinary operatic score by Zbigniew Preisner, Blue is an overwhelming sensory experience. (Criterion) “...dazzles with its succinct emotional power, insights, and technical genius - culminating, in the final moments, in an overwhelming spiritual climax” (TIFF). France/ Poland/ Switzerland 1994,

Three Colours: Blue (Trois couleurs: Bleu)

Three Colours: White (Trois couleurs: Blanc)

91 min, 35mm, Dir: Krzysztof Kieślowski, Polish & French w/ subtitles 5 @ 7PM, 8 @ 9:30PM, 14 @ 3PM

The most playful and also the grittiest of the Three Colours films follows the adventures of Karol Karol (Zbigniew Zamachowski), a Polish immigrant living in France. The hapless hairdresser opts to leave Paris for his native Warsaw when his wife (Julie Delpy) sues him for divorce (her reason: their marriage was never consummated) and then frames him for arson after setting her own salon ablaze. White, which goes on to chronicle Karol Karol’s elaborate revenge plot, manages to be both a ticklish dark comedy about the economic inequalities of Eastern and Western Europe and a sublime reverie about twisted love. (Criterion)

Michael Jackson: This Is It USA 2009, 111 min, Digital, Dir: Kenny Ortega 1 @ 7PM

This Is It offers Michael Jackson fans and music lovers worldwide a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the performer as he developed, created and rehearsed for his sold-out concerts that would have taken place in London’s O2 Arena. Chronicling four months in 2009, the film features Jackson rehearsing a number of his songs for the show. In raw and candid detail, the film captures the singer, dancer, filmmaker, architect, creative genius, and great artist at work as he creates and perfects his final show. Special live music performance by Robert Mallett. Music at 6:30 pm, Film at 7pm.

Edmonton opera/// The Importance of Being Earnest UK / USA 2002, 97 min, Digital, Dir: Oliver Parker 2 @ 7PM

In this adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s witty play about mistaken identities, two proper gentlemen in 1890s London use the same pseudonym, Earnest, for their on the sly courtship activities. Pandemonium ensues when the two men find themselves face-to-face and have to explain who they really are. Starring Colin Firth, Rupert Everett, Reese Witherspoon and Judi Dench. Free Admission

Three Colours: Red (Trois couleurs: Rouge) France/ Poland/ Switzerland 1994, 99 min, 35mm, Dir: Krzysztof Kieślowski, French w/ subtitles 6 @ 7PM, 9 @ 9:30PM, 14 @ 4:45PM

Blind chance or benign fate (according to your point of view) brings Valentine (Irène Jacob), a young model living alone in Geneva, into contact with a retired judge (Jean-Louis Trintignant) with a predilection for eavesdropping on telephone conversations. In time Valentine’s repulsion shades into curiosity, and from there into affection. And the film itself shades from coldness and contrivance into a story as touching and mysterious as anything Kies´lowski has ever made. Trintignant’s performance as the misanthropic old man is a portrait of heartbreak, all the more convincing for his character’s last-ditch efforts to mend other hearts. At the end, Kies´lowski, too, assumes the mantle of Prospero, magically (and rather absurdly) assembling the trilogy’s main players, and it’s hard to begrudge the master his final flourish. (The New Yorker)

Museum Hours Crystal Fairy Chile 2013, 98 min, Digital, Dir: Sebastián Silva 4, 6 @ 9PM, 6 @ 2PM, 12 @ 4PM, 14 @ 9:30PM, 22 @ 7PM

Jamie (Michael Cera) is a boorish, insensitive American twentysomething traveling in Chile, who somehow manages to create chaos at every turn. He and his friends are planning on taking a road trip north to experience a legendary shamanistic hallucinogen called the San Pedro cactus. In a fit of drunkenness at a wild party, Jamie invites an eccentric woman -- a radical spirit named Crystal Fairy (Gaby Hoffmann) -- to come along. What is meant to be a devilmay-care journey becomes a battle of wills as Jamie finds himself locking horns with his new traveling companion. But on a remote, pristine beach at the edge of the desert, the magic brew is finally imbibed, and the true adventure begins.

Austria / USA 2012, 107 min, Digital, Dir: Jem Cohen 5 @ 4:30PM, 5 @ 9PM, 13 @ 1:15PM, 15, 21 @ 9:30PM, 23 @ 7PM

One of the preeminent moving-image artists working today, Jem Cohen has long blurred the line between the gallery and the cinema, so it’s only fitting that his uniquely pleasurable new documentary/fiction hybrid should do the same. Set largely within the Kunsthistorisches Art Museum in Vienna, Museum Hours focuses on Johann, a museum guard, and Anne, a visitor to the country who’s in town tending to a sick friend. Finding refuge in the museum during her many hours alone in a strange city, Anne gradually befriends Johann. As they admire the paintings by the Old Masters that adorn the museum walls, the unlikely friends reflect on how artworks can infuse and shape their daily experiences - and perhaps even change their lives. (TIFF)

An Apology to Elephants USA 2013, 40 min, Digital, Dir: Amy Schatz 6 @ 4:30PM

A documentary that explores how we as a species have brutalized and continue to brutalize these magnificent, intelligent animals in the name of zoos and circuses. Narrated by Lily Tomlin, the film has been nominated for a Primetime Emmy. Many leading elephant experts make an appearance and speak to the issue of elephants in captivity. Lucy, Edmonton’s lone elephant appears in the documentary and it is for her that Voice for Animals is presenting the screening free of charge. They hope it will move you and have you asking “Why”? Why an elephant in a zoo? Guest speakers and discussion to follow the screening. Presented by Voice for Animals. Free Admission

Benny & Joon USA 1993, 93 min, Digital, Dir: Jeremiah S. Chechik 7 @ 7PM

In a small town, an auto mechanic named Benny (Aidan Quinn) is devoted to taking care of his sister, Joon (Mary Stuart Masterson), who experiences mental health issues and struggles to function independently, despite being a talented artist. This relatively stable situation is shaken up when Benny is obliged in a poker game to welcome another player’s relative, Sam (Johnny Depp), to his home for a few days. When Sam arrives, he quickly makes an impression with his quietly eccentric ways, which emulate the antics of the great silent movie comedian, Buster Keaton. Without Benny’s full knowledge, Sam and Joon find themselves drawn to each other to the fullest degree. (Kenneth Chisholm). This film demonstrates that a person with a mental health issue can experience recovery and pursue a good quality of life, and shows the value of having love and support in one’s life. Presented by Canadian Mental Health Association – Edmonton, as part of Mental Illness Awareness Week (Oct 6 – 12). For info go to: edmonton.cmha.ca or call 780 414 6300. FREE ADMISSION.

AGA Film Series/// Once again the AGA partners with Metro Cinema to bring you another exciting season of critically acclaimed films themed around their latest exhibitions.

Take Shelter USA 2011, 123 min, Digital, Dir: Jeff Nichols 8 @ 7PM

Curtis (Michael Shannon) lives in a small town in Ohio with his loving wife, Samantha (Jessica Chastain), and their hearing-impaired six-yearold daughter, Hannah. A solid, taciturn working class man, Curtis does his best to support his family, and all seems to be going well until he starts having intensely disturbing dreams about an impending storm. Take Shelter is a darkly compelling domestic drama-cumpsychological thriller set in the rural American heartland. Propelled by the mesmerizing performance of Shannon as a young husband and father plagued by apocalyptic visions, writer-director Nichols crafts a haunting film firmly rooted in slice-of-life reality. (TIFF) As part of the exhibition The Intellection of Lady Spider House. $2 off for AGA Members.

Their exploits eventually land them on “double-secret probation,” until finally, they are kicked out of school and, as the dean reminds them, newly eligible for the Vietnam draft. An all-time classic college movie that brought much attention to both director John Landis and star John Belushi in the day. Twin Peaks: fire Walk With Me USA 1992, 135 min, Digital, Dir: David lynch 22 @ 9PM

The prequel to one of the greatest Tv series ever made, Fire Walk With Me was met with almost unanimous rejection upon release, due in part to the absence of most of the town’s beloved population. Instead, Lynch chose to focus on the last days of the shows most mysterious figure, Laura Palmer, as she falls inevitably towards her death. Time has been kind, and it can now be seen for what it is: an intense and surreal portrait of a girl in trouble, and a scathing look at the darker side of the human psyche.

casting by friday the 13th USA 1980, 95 min, Digital, Dir: Sean S. cunningham 23 @ 9PM

Dave and Jeff, the Turkey Shoot guys, realize this choice is bound to spur controversy. They appreciate that Friday the 13th has achieved a certain ironic/iconic status as a master horror film, rather than the exploitative cheap gorefest it actually is. Lest we forget, this movie set the cliche standard of punishing the promiscuous and allowing the innocent heroine to survive amidst a lot of falling down. The ending is superb, they recognize, when *SPOILER* turns out to be *SPOILER* and *MORE SPOILERS*, but the acting is hilarious.

USA 2012, 89 min, Digital, Dir: Tom Donahue 24 @ 9:30PM, 26 @ 2PM, 27 @ 4:30PM, 29 @ 7PM

Putting the spotlight on filmmaking’s unsung heroes – the casting director – Casting By takes us on a fast-paced journey through the last half century of Hollywood history from an entirely new perspective. Pioneers like Marion Dougherty and Lynn Stalmaster were iconoclasts whose exquisite taste and gut instincts helped to put the final nail in the coffin of the old studio system and usher in the new Hollywood. Afforded the unprecedented freedom and power of the new medium of television, they broke away from the traditional typecasting of Hollywood and brought actors like James Dean, Dustin Hoffman, Bette Midler, Robert Duvall, and gene Hackman to the screen.

Metro Bizarro/// A monthly foray into the weird, wild, and wonderful world of fringe cinema. Curated by Maggie Hardy.

A Touch of Sin (Tian zhu ding)

Flesh for Frankenstein USA 1974, 95 min, Digital, Dir: Paul Morrissey 25 @ 11:30PM

In 1974 Andy Warhol presented two X-rated retellings of horror classics, both of which were written and directed by Paul Morrissey, starred Udo Keir and Joe Dallesandro, and brought the worlds of art and pornography to new depths of depravity. Bizarro is very pleased to present the very best in exquisite trash: Flesh for Frankenstein. Udo Keir plays Baron Frankenstein, a man obsessed with creating the perfect race. In order to do that he must create the perfect couple, an Adam and Eve that only a madman could make. Celebrate Halloween and Metro Bizarro with one of the maddest movies ever made.

China 2013, 129 min, Digital, Dir: Jia Zhangke, Cantonese w/ subtitles 25 @ 6:45PM, 26 @ 9PM, 27 @ 2PM, 27, 31 @ 7PM, 28 @ 9:15PM

Internationally acclaimed Chinese master Jia Zhangke’s portrait of China unfolds in four chapters, following an episodic structure that seems to adopt the brevity and concision of weibo (China’s Twitter-like microblogs). The film unveils the tragic destiny of four sinners from four different provinces: a miner who takes revenge on a corrupt village chief; a gun-loving migrant worker who shoots his way to easy money; a modest sauna receptionist who, humiliated by a client, turns into a fierce, dagger-wielding goddess; and an abused youth who endures long working hours and all manner of psychological violence. A fascinating mix of social realism and contemporary kung fu, A Touch of Sin invents a new form of martial arts cinema: filmic tai chi for the poor of this world, those who have learned to turn abuse into willingness to fight injustice. The Rocky Horror Picture Show USA 1975, 100 min, Digital, Dir: Jim Sharman 26 @ Midnight

When they stop to look for help, they find themselves at the castle of the charming transvestite Dr. Frank-N-Furter. A place to stay is offered, but will they want to remain there? Edmonton’s Shadow Cast group once again leads the audience participation in this musical tribute to B movie sci-fi/horror cinema. Get your tickets early as it usually sells out! Admission: $12. Byzantium UK/ USA/ Ireland 2013, 118 min, Digital, Dir: Neil Jordan 25 @ 9:15PM, 26 @ 6:45PM, 27, 30, 31 @ 9:30PM, 28 @ 7PM

Two female vampires wreak havoc on an unsuspecting English seaside community in this deliciously depraved supernatural drama from Neil Jordan (The Crying Game, Interview with the Vampire). Introverted Eleanor (Saoirse Ronan) and the outgoing Clara (Gemma Arterton) both carry secrets from deep in their shared past - all 200 years of it. Shacked up in the seedy Byzantium Hotel, they scheme to keep their secret from unsuspecting new marks in Jordan’s seductive, stylish new take on the vampire genre. “This full-blooded epic is Jordan at his most gloriously ambitious.” (NY Magazine)

Ghostbusters I Fall Down Canada 2013, 83 min, Digital, Dir: Christopher White 26 @ 4PM

I Fall Down is the story of Annessa, a lonely teenage girl who befriends Charlie, a disfigured man-child who lives alone in the woods. As their friendship evolves, they are brought to the brink when his primal natural take over, propelling them to a heartbreaking climax. Shot on a $25,000 budget, this gorgeous black and white, super 16mm film is a haunting character study evocative of the tragic monster movies from the Golden Age of cinema. Advanced screening with filmmakers and cast in attendance.

USA 1984, 105 min, Digital, Dir: Ivan Reitman 30 @ 7PM

“There’s something strange in the neighbourhood..” One of the most enjoyable and wonderfully cast comedies of the 80s featuring: Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver. “A deliriously inventive... near flawless example of the 80s genre boom in full swing, fusing state-of-the-art SF X, a loopy guys-on-a-mission plot, some awful synth ‘n’ snare electro-pop and a handful of the finest one-liners ever.” (Time Out) Free Admission for Students with valid ID.
