november 2013 SCHEDULE Provincial Archives Pre-show/// This month, the Provincial Archives of Alberta (PAA) is presenting commercials. The great thing about commercials from the past is that they are a wonderful reflection of their time – they show us what advertisers thought was important and what they thought they could sell. This quality also makes them wildly entertaining in a modern context. For more info, contact PAA at paa@gov.ab.ca or call 780 427-1750. Enjoy the show!
Blue Jasmine USA 2013, 98 min, Digital, Dir: Woody Allen 1 @ 9PM, 2 @ 4:30PM, 3 @ 7:15PM, 5 @ 9:15PM, 7 @ 7PM
After recent excursions to Paris (Midnight in Paris) and Rome (To Rome with Love), Woody Allen returns to American shores with his latest film. Featuring a wonderful ensemble cast, the film follows a high-society New York housewife who is forced to deal with the economic and emotional consequences of her husband’s crooked financial dealings. Jasmine (Cate Blanchett) is used to a life of wealth and privilege, but when her husband Hal (Alec Baldwin) is jailed for a Madoff-like Ponzi scheme, she loses everything and is forced to move in with her blue-collar sister, Ginger (Sally Hawkins) in San Francisco. As she struggles to build a new life for herself without her husband’s illicitly obtained wealth, she must learn to accept her new reality and face up to the past. (TIFF)
Argo Our Man in Tehran Canada 2013, 85 min, Digital, Dirs: Drew Taylor, Larry Weinstein 1 & 4 @ 7PM, 2 @ 12:30PM, 3 & 6 @ 9:15PM, 4 @ 7PM
The film Argo rekindled public awareness of Canada’s pivotal role in the rescue of US diplomats during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis and paid homage to the valiant efforts made by then-ambassador Ken Taylor, as well as his wife and colleagues, to provide a safe haven and counterfeit documents to the six Americans who clandestinely made it out of Tehran unscathed. But Argo was entertainment first and foremost “based on a true story” but not the whole story. ...Our Man in Tehran was actually begun prior to Argo, and simply aims to tell a fuller, more historically accurate version of the dramatic events in Tehran. It is a gripping, hugely informative documentary that chronicles in detail what popularly became known as “The Canadian Caper.” That moniker implies mischief and hijinks, but, as the film’s subjects make clear, this was no game. Lives were on the line. (TIFF)
USA 2012, 120 min, Digital, Dir: Ben Affleck 2 @ 2:15PM, 4 @ 8:45PM
Based on real events, Argo chronicles the life-ordeath covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis. On November 4, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point, militants storm the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor. Knowing it is only a matter of time before they are found out and likely killed, the Canadian and American governments ask the CIA to intervene. The CIA turns to their top “exfiltration” specialist, Tony Mendez, to come up with a plan to get the six Americans safely out of the country. A plan so incredible, it could only happen in the movies.

Annie Hall USA 1977, 93 min, Digital, Dir: Woody Allen 3 @ 12:45PM, 7 @ 9PM
Metro’s spotlight on Woody Allen goes beyond his latest film to this eternal classic. An acclaimed coming-of-cinematic-age film for Allen is based in part on his own life. His love affair with Hall/ Keaton is chronicled as an episodic, wistful comedy commenting on family, love, loneliness, communicating, maturity, driving, city life, careers, and various other topics. Abounds with classic scenes, including future star Jeff Goldblum and his mantra at a cocktail party; Allen and the lobster pot; and Allen, Keaton, a bathroom, a tennis racket, and a spider. The film operates on many levels, as does Keaton’s wardrobe, which started a major fashion trend. Expertly shot by Gordon Willis. (Videohound)

Journey to Italy Italy/ France 1954, 97 min, New Digital Restoration, Dir: Roberto Rossellini 8, 10 & 13 @ 7PM, 9 @ 9:15PM, 11 @ 2PM, 14 @ 9PM
Among the most influential films of the postwar era, Roberto Rossellini’s Journey to Italy charts the declining marriage of a British couple (Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders) on a trip in the countryside near Naples. More than just an anatomy of a relationship, Rossellini’s masterpiece is a heartrending work of emotional transcendence and profound spirituality. Considered an ancestor of the existential works of Michelangelo Antonioni; hailed as a groundbreaking work of modernism by the critics of Cahiers du cinéma; and named by Martin Scorsese as one of his favourite films, Journey to Italy is a breathtaking cinematic landmark. This new restoration of the Englishlanguage version of the film features Bergman and Sanders voicing their own dialogue. (Janus)

20 Feet from Stardom USA 2013, 91 min, Digital, Dir: Morgan Neville 9 @ 7:15PM, 10 @ 2PM, 11 @ 9:15PM, 13 @ 9PM
Millions know their voices, but no one knows their names. 20 Feet from Stardom reveals the true story of the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century. Triumphant and heartbreaking in equal measure, the film is both a tribute to the unsung voices who brought shape and style to popular music and a reflection on the conflicts, sacrifices, and rewards of a career spent harmonizing with others. These gifted artists span a range of styles, genres, and eras of popular music, but each has a uniquely fascinating and personal story to share of life spent in the shadows of superstardom. Along with rare archival footage and a peerless soundtrack, the film boasts intimate interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger, and Sting to name just a few.

Fight Club USA/ Germany 1999, 139 min, Digital, Dir: David Fincher 10 @ 9PM
The first rule of Fight Club is, you do not talk about Fight Club. The second rule of Fight Club is YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB. But forget the rules, lets talk about Fight Club. A cog in the corporate machine (Edward Norton) meets a charismatic Anarchist (Brad Pitt) and discovers the cure to his depression in a secret society where men attempt to connect with their feelings by beating the hell out of each other. A critique on the dehumanizing consequences of our consumer culture, Chuck Palahniuk’s novel was faithfully adapted by David Fincher into one of the most blatantly subversive films ever produced in the studio system, which was a critical and financial disappointment upon release but has gone on to become one of defining movies for a generation.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
AGA Film Series///
USA/ UK 1964, 95 min, Digital, Dir: Stanley Kubrick 11 @ 4PM
A look at the potential problems of nuclear warfare, Dr. Strangelove is an all-out comedic assault on the cold-war era military-industrial complex. Peter Sellers goes insane in three classic performances as a British exchange officer, the American President, and the titular German scientist, all of whom are trying to avoid Armageddon after an American General goes mad and orders a nuclear attack on Russia. Truly, satire at it’s finest.
Crime Watch/// From thriller to comedy and classic to contemporary, Crime Watch offers a diverse and provocative glimpse into the cinematic criminal world. Curated by Laura O’Connor.
Manhattan Murder Mystery USA 1993, 104 mins, Digital, Dir: Woody Allen 11 @ 7PM
Meet Larry (Woody Allen) and Carol (Diane Keaton) Lipton, two moderately normal New Yorkers adapting to their slightly emptier high-rise nest after dropping their son off at college. To her delight and his chagrin they find themselves at their neighbours’ apartment for dinner after a chance encounter with the elderly couple. Less than a week later, the wife suddenly dies and the husband seems, in Carol’s opinion, a little too ready to move on. The game is afoot, for Carol at least; Larry wants no part of it… that is until their friends Ted (Alan Alda) and Marcia (Angelica Houston) get involved. Metro’s Woody Allen triad is completed by this month’s Crime Watch selection.

Canada 2013, 83 min, Digital, Dir: Alan Zweig 15 @ 6:45PM, 16 @ 9:15PM, 17 @ 12PM, 18 @ 7PM
We humans love our lists. To-do lists, resolution lists, “bucket lists” - unequivocal directives all. So when filmmaker Alan Zweig discovered Ray Robertson’s book Why Not? Fifteen Reasons To Live, he was intrigued by the concept of organizing the panoply of life itself into a list. Said 15 reasons are: Love, solitude, critical mind, art, individuality, home, work, humour, friendship, intoxication, praise, meaning, body, duty, and death. To savour them all would presumably be to truly live. From this inspiration begins a series of episodic chapters adapted to the themes and the participants are as eclectic as the list itself, sharing personal anecdotes related to the themes, amongst others. Humorous and sometimes heartbreaking, their stories expressed through conversational and candid interviews, strike deeper chords about finding meaning in our existence.

When inked-up tattoo artist Elise (Veerle Baetens) meets gentle, banjo-playing bluegrass musician Didier (Johan Heldenbergh, author of the play on which the film is based), it’s love at first sight. Despite some considerable differences: he talks, she listens; he is a dedicated atheist (while at the same time a naïve romantic), while the cross tattooed on the back of her neck speaks to her grounded yet quietly dedicated faith. Their lives quickly become inextricably intertwined as Elise starts singing in Didier’s band, and the two soon have a daughter, Maybelle; but when she falls critically ill after her sixth birthday, the seemingly inseparable bond between this perennial odd couple is put to the test. A passionate and moving love story scored to a glorious soundtrack of traditional and original bluegrass compositions. (TIFF)

Located on the banks of the Tennessee River, Muscle Shoals, Alabama is the unlikely breeding ground for some of the most creative and defiant music in American history. Under the spiritual influence of the “Singing River,” as Native Americans called it, the music is some of the most important and resonant of all time. Tens of thousands of tracks were created there and at its heart is Rick Hall, who founded FAME Studios. Overcoming crushing poverty and staggering tragedies, he brought black and white musicians together to create music that would last for generations while also giving birth to the unique ‘Muscle Shoals sound’ and the rhythm section, ‘The Swampers’. The film features legendary artists Aretha Franklin, Greg Allman, Clarence Carter, Jimmy Cliff, Etta James, Alicia Keys, Wilson Pickett, Keith Richards, Percy Sledge, and many others.

Kennedy, serves with honour in Vietnam with Lieutenant Dan (Gary Sinise), speaks at an anti-war rally at the Washington Monument, opens a profitable shrimping business with his old army pal (Mykelti Williamson) and more. An idyllic family vacation quickly unravels into a surrealist and darkly comic nightmare of paranoid visions, bizarre encounters, and an obsessive pursuit of a pair of sexy Parisian teenagers. Chillingly shot in black and white, Escape from Tomorrow dissects the mythology of artificial perfection while subversively attacking our culture’s obsession with mass entertainment.

JFK Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction Switzerland 2012, 77 min, Digital, Dir: Sophie Huber 22 & 27 @ 9PM, 23 @ 2PM, 23 & 25 @ 7PM, 24 @ 5PM
Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction is a mesmerizing, impressionistic portrait of the iconic actor comprised of intimate moments and film clips from some of his 250 films and his own heart-breaking renditions of American folk songs. Stunningly lensed in colour and black and white by Seamus McGarvey, the film explores the actor’s enigmatic outlook on his life, his unexploited talents as a musician, and includes candid scenes with David Lynch, Wim Wenders, Sam Shepard, Kris Kristofferson, and Debbie Harry. The fragile soul of an actor emerges from this poignant collage.
Quadrophenia UK 1979, 117 min, Digital, Dir: Franc Roddam 22 @ 10:45PM, 24 @ 9:15PM
This film version of the Who’s rock opera Quadrophenia makes a few tentative stabs at “explaining” the alienation of 1960s British working-class youth, but its major selling point is its non stop rock-and-R&B musical score... Phil Daniels plays Jimmy, a member of a welldressed, drugged-up teenaged gang called the Mods, forever duking it out with the cycle-punk Rockers. The rivalry between the two gangs comes to a head during three tempestuous days in the seaside town of Brighton. If you aren’t fascinated by the visual pyrotechnics of Quadrophenia, just close your eyes and revel in the music of the Who, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, the Chiffons, and many others. (Hal Erickson, Rovi)
Design is One: Lella & Massimo Vignelli USA 2012, 79 min, Digital, Dirs: Kathy Bruce, Roberto Guerra 26 @ 7PM
Italian-born Massimo and Lella Vignelli are among the world’s most influential designers. From graphics to interiors to products and corporate identities, the film brings us into the work and everyday moments of the Vignellis’ world, capturing their intelligence and creativity, as well as their humanity, warmth, and humor. Presented by MADE.
USA 1991, 206 min, Digital, Dir: Oliver Stone 26 @ 9PM
To mark the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination, Cult Cinema proudly presents what may be Oliver Stone’s most impressive achievement, an epic conspiracy thriller based on the true story of the only trial brought in the assassination of the president. Kevin Costner plays real-life New Orleans DA Jim Garrison, who gets the conspiracy bee in his bonnet, leading him to businessman Clay Shaw (Tommy Lee Jones) and his dubious associates. Through an impressive barrage of mixed media, startling cinematography, and a who’s-who cast of characters played by some of the most familiar faces of the era, JFK momentarily brought conspiracy theory into the mainstream.
Driving Blind Canada 2012, 76 min, Digital, Dir: James Griffo 28 @ 7PM
To promote awareness and raise funds, The Choroideremia Research Foundation Canada presents the Canadian debut of Driving Blind, a documentary that highlights the courageous cross-country journey of two brothers. With the prospect of losing their sight due to choroideremia, a rare degenerative eye disease, Tod and Justin Purvis set out to experience and create lasting memories of many people and places in the US asking the question: “what would you choose to see if you knew you were going blind?” That this film is debuting in Edmonton is highly fitting, as a ground breaking choroideremia clinical trial is about to be launched at the U of A. It is expected that this work will contribute to the development of solutions for more common blinding diseases. Tickets: $10. For advance tickets call: 780 447 5585.

Both Raymond and the smart-mouthed and uncannily talented pre-teen daughter of Collins, Katie, want marriage and a new baby to be born, with this baby carrying forth the power that Katie is starting to show. An older man appears from another world (John Houston) and intervenes as the force of good that this power potentially has, trying to stop Katie from using her powers for evil and to take her back to a place where the goodness of children can thrive.
Cutie and the Boxer USA 2013, 82 min, Digital, Dir: Zachary Heinzerling 29 @ 7PM, 30 @ 4PM, 30 @ 9PM (Engagement continues into Dec)
This candid story explores the chaotic 40-year marriage of renowned “boxing” painter, Ushio Shinohara and his artist wife, Noriko. As a rowdy, confrontational young artist in Tokyo, Ushio seemed destined for fame, but met with little commercial success after he moved to New York City in 1969 seeking international recognition. When 19-year-old Noriko moved to New York to study art, she fell in love with Ushio. She abandoned her education to become the wife and assistant to an unruly, alcoholic husband. Over the course of their marriage, the roles have shifted. Now 80, Ushio struggles to establish his artistic legacy, while Noriko is at last being recognized for her own art - a series of drawings entitled “Cutie,” depicting her challenging past with Ushio. Spanning four decades, the film is a moving portrait of a couple wrestling with the eternal themes of sacrifice, disappointment, and aging, against a background of lives dedicated to art.
Vic + Flo Saw a Bear (Vic + Flo ont vu unours) Canada 2013, 95 min, Digital, Dir: Denis Côté, French w/ subtitles 29 @ 9PM, 30 @ 2PM, 30 @ 7PM (Engagement continues into Dec)
Vic + Flo Saw a Bear is a darkly mysterious tale of two lesbian ex-cons, Victoria and Florence, trying to make a new life in the backwoods of Quebec. Seeking peace and quiet, the couple slowly begins to feel under siege as Vic’s probation office keeps unexpectedly popping up and a strange woman in the neighbourhood soon turns out to be an increasingly menacing shadow from Flo’s past. With its collection of complex and eccentric characters, unexpected plot twists, and unsettling humor, director Denis Côté (Curling, Bestiaire) has created an original film that is as once traumatizing, uplifting, and utterly breathless.
