40 TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON PROGRAM

3

40 Years of Northern Light Theatre “Life begins at forty”. So says W. B. Pitkin. And so we begin our 40th anniversary season of producing challenging, exciting, dynamic and controversial works of live performance by looking back on our most recent accomplishments. Last season focused on the theme of sexuality, gender, gender roles, and the way they are changing in today’s society. Space//Space saw a gender flip between two brothers in outer space, forcing them to examine the binary notion of gender and the inherent stereotypes in the battle of the sexes. Just as the GSA debate hit a high point here in Alberta, we opened The Pink Unicorn, anchored by an astounding performance by Louise Lambert as Trisha Lee, that followed a single Texan mother’s journey as her daughter proclaimed her right to live as ‘a gender-neutral person’. This heart-wrenching piece was widely embraced by the general public, and received the Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role and Outstanding Production awards at the Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Awards.

NORTHERN LIGHT THEATRE

We closed our season with Christina/Philippe, a dizzying collage-script of text, song and visuals on the topic of transgenderism- in the same week that Caitlyn Jenner hit the mainstream news with her big reveal of her new gender identity. Topical, indeed! Our upcoming season continues to explore issues and situations that will elicit dialogue, fire up discussion and challenge your perceptions of the way we live in the world around us- Just as you have come to expect from NLT over the past 40 years... Please go to our website at www.northernlighttheatre.com to read an extended history of NLT (complete with photos and fun facts), and join us this season for a world premiere by Rosemary Rowe, an adaptation of a famous Australian novel, and pairings with returning collaborators L’UniThéâtre and new partners the Good Women Dance Collective. Arthur Schopenhauer says “The first forty years of life give us the text: the next thirty supply the commentary”. Here’s to the next 30...! TREVOR SCHMIDT Artistic Director

N

orthern Light Theatre is delighted to celebrate our 10th anniversary of presenting our Performance Camps for Young People. Northern Light Theatre’s performance camps are Edmonton’s only summer theatre camp to combine a classic tale with history for a unique blend of education, performance and FUN! Accomplished theatre artist and arts educator Maralyn Ryan directs a troupe of young aspiring performers through their theatrical journey. The students are given the opportunity to explore singing, acting and movement as they rehearse an original play adapted from a significant period in history. Other classes include improvisation, theatre games, and acting techniques which stoke the imagination and develop ensemble work.

Registration for August 2016 camps begins May 1, 2016. Visit www.northernlighttheatre.com for details and registration. 6

NORTHERN LIGHT THEATRE

“…only goes to show that when you offer theatre people the chance to join a large ensemble cast, to decipher clues and rise to bizarre performing challenges to raise money — in short, to dash for the limelight in an Amazing Race cum scavenger hunt for upstagers — there’s just no stopping them” – EDMONTON JOURNAL

T

o launch each new theatre season Northern Light Theatre hosts the Battle for the Limelighta city-wide fundraiser in which arts groups collect pledges and compete in a scavenger hunt to win gold (and bragging rights for the rest of the year).

By staging a battle, Northern Light Theatre hopes to win the war on arts fundraising by giving every theatre group the chance to raise pledges without having to mount their own campaign. No matter who walks away with the trophies- every theatre company wins. A full scale event with many moving parts, people and locations, NLT needs a lot of sponsors, donors, funders, volunteers and supplies to make Battle for the Limelight happen every year. To donate to Battle for the Limelight and keep this creative and kooky community-wide event coming back every autumn, visit www.northernlighttheatre.com

WORLD PREMIERE OF NEW CANADIAN PLAY

“By midnight tonight, I could be in Pete’s arms and then…stuff will happen.”

very night from 3pm to midnight, fifteen year old Maranatha Graham puts on her homemade wedding dress and hopes that today will be the day her groom Pete picks her up from the Pullmans’ house, where Daddy has sent her to wait. Pete could arrive at any moment. But as her wait wears on, Maranatha has an increasingly difficult time ignoring Satan’s whisperings…

Rosemary Rowe Rosemary Rowe is a playwright, essayist, blogger and performer whose plays, cabaret pieces and occasional donut performance art have been produced on stages across Canada. Most recently, her play Camp Victoria received its world premiere at Lunchbox Theatre in Calgary, where it was nominated for a Betty Mitchell Award for Outstanding New Play. One of her oldest plays, No One Showed Up for the Anarchist Rally, was staged as part of Theatre Network’s Nextfest 20th Anniversary Showcase. Her short play Anne and Diana were TOTALLY DOING IT was published in Queering the Way: The Loud and Queer Anthology and her essay Aspiring Lesbian Aunt was published in the LAMBDA Literary Award nominated anthology A Family By Any Other Name: Exploring Queer Relationships. Rose is currently collaborating with composer and lyricist Cameron Northey on a musical version of her 1995 Fringe hit Alice Didn’t Have Those Mondo Ears. She’s pretty sure they’ll change that title. Rose’s personal blog, CreampuffRevolution.com, landed her a spot as national finalist on CBC Radio’s inaugural Canada Writes – on the same day as her wedding. She didn’t win the contest, but she did win at love. Rose and her wife Kate live in Vancouver. The playwright acknowledges the assistance of Vancouver’s Wet Ink Collective in the development of THE GOOD BRIDE.

L’UniThéâtre L’UniThéâtre is Alberta’s only professional francophone theatre company—creating, presenting and promoting French language theatre in Edmonton and beyond. L’UniThéâtre represents the “unification” of le Théâtre Français d’Edmonton (founded in 1968) and la Boîte à Popicos (1977). L’UniThéâtre’s roots are therefore long and strong. Its mandate continues to promote theatre arts through professional, educational and community initiatives. It also dedicates itself to theatre for young audiences both through touring and their annual Festival de Theatre de Jeunesse d’Alberta. Its accomplishments are many. Among them are: having been invited to participate in Festival Zones théâtrales in Ottawa;

In 2013, L’UniThéâtre received the Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Award for Outstanding Contribution to Theatre in Edmonton. In 2014, L’UniThéâtre had nominations for Outstanding New Play, Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role and Outstanding Set Design in the co-production with Northern Light Theatre of Mercy of a Storm.

nder the creative artistic vision of Trevor Schmidt, with full support of the administrative team and the board, Northern Light Theatre is dedicated to producing intimate and affecting work that speaks to the modern audience of the urban human condition, the failure to find security and the loss of the dreams held by all for love and happiness. NLT values its position on the far end of the spectrum within our local theatre community, and feels it has a unique role to play as an outspoken and purposefully controversial not-for-profit theatre. We hope to make contact and develop ongoing relationships and partnerships with similar-minded companies within our province and country in the years to come.
