You won’t find any other car dealership in the city that looks like Don Wheaton on Whyte (10727-82 Avenue) – especially with its new renovations inside and out. Great effort has been put into making sure this dealership is thoroughly modern while retaining its retro charm. In a way, it’s like the new Chevy Camaro, which marries the fantastic design of the 1960s with today’s spaciousness and fuel economy. (Check out the new models at Don Wheaton on Whyte.) By the way, the Wheaton family started operating this business in the early 1960s. The building itself is from the 1950s.
Fountain Tire (10021-82 Avenue) isn’t just about tires. They provide full
automotive service, everything from front ends to motors to transmissions and tune-ups. Did you know that the Fountain Tire in Old Strathcona specializes in doing customized wheel jobs? If you want to upgrade your vehicle, ask for bigger wheels or chrome rims.
After 20 years in the same location (9927 Whyte Ave, behind Crystal Glass), Lube-X is changing its name to Jiffy Lube. The location is staying the same, but they’ve got a whole new look. What else is changing? Their new product line will be Pennzoil… but for return customers, Jiffy Lube will still carry Quaker State brand. After all, the greatest thing about these guys has always been their great service. Cracked windshield? Take your vehicle to Crystal Glass (9943-82 Avenue). But they do more than windshields. They’ll even repair shattered bath-

Backbeat School of Rock
What Edmonton club did David Bowie hit the night before his concert in 1990? The Yardbird Suite (11 Tommy Banks Way)! Check the signatures on the wall in the green room – nearly every single jazz musician in Canada has played here: Big Miller, Pepper Adams, and more. Bowie didn’t play here – he’s just a fan.

of Aerosmith is here, he pays a visit to Lillo’s Music (10848-82 Avenue). He’s an avid guitar collector – and Lillo’s has a great collection of vintage guitars. Other celebrity shoppers have included Stevie Wonder and k.d. lang. As an interesting side note, Lillo’s also provides music lessons through the Lillo’s School of Modern Music Ltd. – so who knows what rock stars of the future they’re training! A good 80% of the people who come to Permanent Records (8126 Gateway Blvd) are rabid music fans. They love to come in and talk music and root through collections of vinyl and CDs that go deep: folk, rock, metal, and a ton of blues. Kinda like in the movie High Fidelity. But cooler. What do a lot of people do on the last night before their wedding day? Karaoke at Rosie’s Bar & Grill (10475-80 Avenue), Thursdays through Saturdays! It’s also a big attraction for birthdays and dates – for 19 year olds and the over50 crowd alike. With over 20,000 songs to choose from, they’ve got everything from rock to Patsy Cline. Old Strathcona’s latest addition to its roster of music stores is
Long &
McQuade (10828-82 Avenue). After all these years, it’s still owned and operated by Jack Long, a longtime jazz trumpeter who first opened his business back in 1956 on Carlton Street in Toronto. Jack was responsible for a lot of “firsts.” In the 1960s, he brought in Pete Traynor, who designed the first wedgeshaped stage monitor as well as Traynor amplifiers… which, incidentally, you can still find on sale at Long & McQuade.
Yardbird Suite
Where do rock stars come to shop when they’re in town? Every time Joe Perry
If you happen to play with a band that smashes its equipment at the end of a show like The Who circa 1965, take it to Acoustic Music Shop (993482 Avenue). They can fix it for you. They’ve got the best repair shop in town. Over the years, they’ve done some crazy jobs. So if your grandfather had a guitar from the 1930s and it spent all these years in a barn or getting rained on, remember: Acoustic Music Shop can restore it. It’s also a place where you can pick up beautiful vintage guitars, like a 1968 Martin D-28. Imagine still rockin’ at 100! 2012 marks the 100th birthday of what is perhaps Old Strathcona’s most legendary historic building: the Commercial Hotel. One of the things that really put the place on the map is the blues bar inside.
Blues on Whyte (10329-82 Avenue) is one of the only seven-nights-aweek-live-blues-music-venues in all of North America. Its Saturday afternoon blues jam has been going strong for years. And the crowd at Blues on Whyte is, hands down, one of the most eclectic in Edmonton, with everything from bikers to barristers.

Go Organic Let’s Get Down to Earth
Keep yourself healthy with fresh and delicious organic foods. Your body will love you for it (and so will the planet). When purchasing the ingredients for its homemade-style East Indian cuisine,
Narayanni’s
(10131-81 Avenue) goes the distance. Well, actually they DON’T go the distance. Wherever possible, they buy their squash, peas, chicken and lamb locally – and they favour organics. Try their Vegan nights on the first Tuesday of the month – delicious!
Check out the organic section at Save-On-Foods (10368-78 Avenue) for some truly delicious treats, like Canadian-made Nuts to You organic peanut butter and Crofter’s Concord Grape spread – organic and sweetened with fair trade cane sugar. Together, they’re simply incredible. Did you know that Old Strathcona even has a store for health-conscious pet
owners? Tail Blazers (7520 Gateway Boulevard) is a holistic pet store that sells all-natural dry, canned and raw foods for dogs and cats. This pet food has no colourings or chemical preservatives. And it’s corn, soy and gluten free. In most of the pet foods you’ll find elsewhere, these latter ingredients are simply there to bulk up the food, but they have no nutritional value. In fact, did you know that dogs can’t digest corn or soy? Head to the deli section of Planet Organic (7917-104 Street) and try one of their cosmic cookies, an out-of-this-world blend of chocolate chips, pumpkin seeds and sunflowers. Did you know that Planet Organic started up right here in Old Strathcona and is now nationwide? All of the produce at Blush Lane Organic (8135-102 Street) is certified organic. And what a selection! They have over 30 different varieties of apples alone. Blush Lane also has its own organic orchard, in Keremeos BC, 18

All Seasons Garden Centre
(10027–81 Ave) sells everything to help you grow your own house plants and vegetables – including organic supplements. With the right microbes and extra lighting, you can start an indoor garden and be eating vine-ripe tomatoes in January!
Old Strathcona even has an organic beauty salon! Visit The Beauty Parlour (2nd floor, 10011-82 Avenue) and the first thing you’ll notice is that you can’t smell any chemicals. This clean-air salon has great organic cosmetics. You and the earth will both love the Kevin Murphy hair care products, made with naturally harvested ingredients and recycled packaging.

History Back to the future
History teaches us many things – not the least of which is that old favourites always seem to come back round again. The Edmonton Streetcars are a great example of the past revisiting the future. A favourite attraction, the first streetcars started running across the High Level Bridge and into the Whyte Avenue area in 1913. In 1951 the streetcars were shut down but a group of volunteers lovingly restored and ran Streetcar #1 in 1979. The popular streetcars have been running ever since. In 2011 alone, 54,000 people rode the Old Strathcona line. The Society is completely operated by volunteers, including the 40 trained drivers. Ride the Edmonton Streetcars between May and October every year.
Dr. Wilbert McIntyre Park (8303-104 Street) is a popular hub of
activities with historic beginnings. Dr. McIntyre was a political activist at the turn of the century. The Varscona Theatre and the Walterdale Playhouse were fire halls, with their towers used as places to hang and dry fire hoses. The current Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market building and TransAlta Arts Barns housed buses and streetcars. The TransAlta underwent extensive renovations with state of the art technology to turn it into a multimillion dollar theatre complex. The park’s fountain was originally at the intersection of 83 Avenue and 104 Street until it was struck by a car in the 1950s. Years later the Old Strathcona Foundation made a replica of it for the park. At Wee Book Inn (10310 Whyte Avenue) everything old is new again. The boutique has a superb collection of older books, some dating as far back as the 1600s. The store itself has been open in Old Strathcona for 42 years. Over the years they’ve seen many odd and interesting books, including a Franklin Library set with books signed by such renowned authors as Kurt Vonnegut and John Steinbeck. Also of renown are the Wee Book Inn’s cats, one at each of the four locations. Each feline is named after a hockey great and Bunny (a.k.a. Bunny Laraque) proudly resides at the Whyte Ave store.
Heritage buildings are a huge part of Old Strathcona’s charm.
The first buildings along Whyte Avenue and 103 Street were built by the railway. The Railway Station opened in January 1908 and was built for $24,000. The Edmonton & Calgary Railway Company built the Edmonton House Hotel, now the Strathcona Hotel, in 1891. During Prohibition this hotel served as the Westminister Ladies College. The original brick Strathcona Telephone Exchange was erected in 1908 by Alberta Government Telephones.

Events
On the Fringe (not just in August)
Every August, we have the third largest Fringe Theatre Festival in the world – and many other great events the rest of the year. Whyte Avenue Art Walk Festival
July 13 – 15, 2012 Daily from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Think of the Whyte Avenue Art Walk Festival as one great big outdoor studio and gallery, sort of like the Left Bank of Paris. This year you’ll find over 400 working artists along an almost four kilometre stretch from 107 to 103 Street. A good 95% of those artists are from Edmonton and area, according to Kim Fjordbotten of The Paint Spot, the Old Strathcona art store responsible for this amazing festival. (As an interesting trivia note, there’s an art store in Montreal that’s now copying this festival. Imitation really IS the best form of flattery!)
Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival
August 16 – 26, 2012 What can you expect at the Edmonton Fringe Festival? The unexpected! That’s what you get with more than 1,600 performances of 220 non-juried and uncensored plays running each day to midnight – theatre that’s beautifully and often hilariously unhinged. This year’s theme is “Village of the Fringed”. The Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival is Canada’s largest and longest-running Fringe Festival (now 31 years) and the oldest Fringe Theatre Festival in North America. 780-448-9000 • www.fringetheatreadventures.ca
Edmonton Ghost Tours
A Ghostly Walk Through Old Strathcona Fall 2012 There is much more to life than meets the eye. Perfectly timed for the Halloween season, Edmonton Ghost Tours gives you the chance to learn more about Old Strathcona’s past – and the spirits that linger on in some of its historic buildings. The tours start in front of the fire rescuer statue outside the Walterdale Playhouse (10322-83 Avenue)…. which, incidentally, was once a volunteer fire department in the 1900s. In 1909, one of the volunteer firefighters there died in the bunkhouse. Take the Ghost Tour and you will learn that it is believed his spirit continues to wander through the theatre, moving props. And that’s just one of the exciting stories you’ll hear! www.edmontonghosttours.com 26

Theatre Get Your Bum Down Here
Our vibrant theatre scene knows how to put-bums-in-the-seats, with everything from improv comedy to edgy and experimental dramas.
On October 3, 2000, on opening night of the 10th season of the improv soap
opera comedy Die-Nasty, there was a knock on the back door of Varscona
Theatre (10329-83 Ave).
It was Mike Myers of Austin Powers fame, wanting to be part of the show! With programming 350 days a year, the odds of something cool like that happening at any of the shows here are pretty high. Five thriving theatre groups call the Varscona their home. Many others rent it throughout the year. Nudity, figure skating, and love at Abu Ghraib Prison – these are just a few reasons why Northern Light Theatre (#201 8909-99 Street) is continuously hailed as one of Edmonton theatre’s most consistently surprising little companies. And what happens onstage can be surprising indeed! Did you know that Walterdale Playhouse (10322-83 Avenue) is Canada’s second longest running community theatre group? The Walterdale is also responsible for being a career-starter for names such as Anne Wheeler, director of Bye Bye Blues, and playwright Brad Fraser, who went on to write for TV’s Queer as Folk. The Walterdale’s output is impressive: over 500 plays in more than 50 years! (Cont’d on p. 32 )

Varscona Theatre
“Delightfully dark.” “Playfully perverse.” Those are just some of the words people have use to describe the edgy and experimental theatre created by Catalyst Theatre (8529 Gateway Blvd). Recently, Hunchback and Nevermore: The Imaginary Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe won rave reviews. To add to the good news, artistic director Jonathan Christenson was just named one of Alberta’s 50 Most Influential People by Alberta Venture magazine.

Gift Stores
These Are a Few of My Favourite Things… The shelves of our gift stores are filled with one-of-a-kind gifts for that favourite person in your life.
Looking for something cute, cuddly and truly one-of-a-kind? See the handmade monsters of Belua Designs, Saturdays 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market (10310-83 Avenue). Each one is unique – and each one has a different and equally unique name. How does Sarah Bourqh, owner and designer of Belua Designs come up with great monster monikers? She doesn’t! She leaves it up to her father-in-law. In his 70s and “very British,” she says, he just loves coming up with names like Fuzzak and Spurden. When you’re at Laurel’s On Whyte (8210-104 Street) picking up those orchids or flowers imported direct from Hawaii, pick up some scented soy candles from Natura Soylights, out of Cochane, Alberta. Laurel’s is the only store in Edmonton that carries them. They also have a great “Bug Be Gone” candle, which works for keeping mosquitoes away but has the most beautiful, natural scent. Imagine that! In October 2012, Burlington Tobacconists celebrates their 25th anniversary in the same location, 10468 Whyte Ave. A company in Italy – Lorenzetti – is making a commemorative pipe for the occasion. Pre-order yours today. (Retail $295.00) Pick up a super comic-book-style Silver Surfer vaporizer at Shell Shock (8122 Gateway Blvd). And come in for the extremely random (Cont’d on p. 38)
