Edmonton Pride Festival Society The 2012 Edmonton Pride Festival is upon us and it promises to be another exciting year!
Last year we adopted a new three-year theme: Stand Up! Stand OUT! Stand Proud! The theme was born out of a desire to encourage our community to Stand and celebrate the richness and diversity of our lives. It also serves as an opportunity to support and recognize those who work to educate and increase awareness both within and outside the LGBTQ community. The focus this year is Stand OUT! When it comes to contributing to a community, people stand out in many ways. Over the years, many individuals and organizations have made a significant contribution to the pursuit of equality in its various forms. They stand out publicly by advocating for legislative changes and bringing forward cases to the courts to end discrimination and create a community that provides equal opportunity, regardless of sexual identity. Others stand out by working behind the scenes to educate their families, increase awareness of LGBTQ issues among colleagues or create a circle of friends that share a common interest. These contributions take a different form, but also add to the creation of a safe and accepting community. However you choose to Stand OUT!, take the time to celebrate your contributions to Edmonton’s LGBTQ community! This year’s Festival includes amazing entertainment, art, sports and family-friendly activities. The Edmonton Pride Festival Society, community groups, businesses and other organizations have a shared responsibility to ensure the overall success of the capital region’s Pride Festival. Edmonton Vocal Minority bury Theatre in Old Strathcona. Music from The Addams Family and The Rocky Horror Picture Show will be the highlights, in this somewhat black and white departure from the choir’s usual rainbow coloured Pride offering. Hosted by the always entertaining Darrin Hagen, you’ll glimpse the real diva-side of the choir. During Pride 2012 also look for Edmonton Vocal Minority at the Celebration on the Square Presented by TD, marching proudly in the Pride Parade, and performing at select community events. It could be ABBA, Mozart, or Lady Gaga. Edmonton Vocal Minority is willing to explore any musical style in its quest to entertain. For those who love to sing, EVM is a great place to meet new people, learn solid vocal techniques, and get all dressed up and perform on stage. If you can carry a tune and handle the weekly rehearsal commitment, you’ll pass the audition! Maybe you’re not a singer, or can’t afford the time it takes to be a full-time member of the choir, but there are still ways to be involved with the mission of Edmonton Vocal Minority. Volunteer at a concert, advertise in the choir’s programs, or make a donation to the organization. Of course, just being a part of EVM’s fabulous audience is a rewarding and entertaining experience in itself. EVM concerts are well known for being high-energy crowd pleasers.

Since 1993, Edmonton Vocal Minority has been a voice in the Edmonton musical community for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people. It welcomes individuals of all sexual orientations who support the choir’s goals to strengthen, uplift, and empower audiences with its unique perspective on the world. In June 2013 EVM will be celebrating its twentieth anniversary with a special concert on June 22 that will welcome back alumni members from all over the country. Then, in May 2014, the choir will travel to Ottawa for the Unison 2014 Festival. The Unison Festivals are opportunities for Queer choirs from across Canada to come together and perform. Edmonton hosted the very first national festival in 1998. Before any of that happens, however, EVM is gearing up for Pride 2012. On Thursday, June 7 EVM will present A Touch of Goth at the West

Stand OUT! Team Edmonton celebrates Edmonton’s Pride Festival theme this year by ensuring that Edmonton’s sports and recreation community stands out not only during the festival, but throughout the entire year. Team Edmonton, a registered non-profit organization, continues to ensure that Edmonton’s LGBTQ sports and recreation participants have access to a wide variety of affordable, engaging, and accessible opportunities that add to the diverse fabric of our community. Edmonton Rainbow Business Association What is ERBA? The Edmonton Rainbow Business Association is a registered not-for-profit society that was founded in 1998 with the goal of serving Edmonton’s LGBT community and our allies. This year, as every year, ERBA will be participating in the Pride Parade and will have a booth at the Celebration on the Square presented by TD with information on our LGBT owned or friendly members, many of whom sponsor or participate in pride events independent of their ERBA involvement. PRIDE 2012 PARADE MARSHAL Every year the Edmonton Pride Festival Committee selects an Honorary Parade Marshal to lead the parade. This is the LGBTQ community’s opportunity to both recognize and honour an individual or group that STANDS OUT. The Honorary Parade Marshal for 2012’s STAND OUT Parade is the Edmonton Public School Board. Last November the Board approved a new Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity policy, which ensures that all sexual and gender minority students, staff, and families are welcomed, respected, accepted, and supported in every school. This ground-breaking policy was the first of its kind created by a school board on the prairies and the Board’s support for the policy was unanimous. Now the Board and school district will work towards implementing the policy in all schools and programs within Edmonton Public Schools. As a result, sexual and gender minority students, staff, and families will be safer in our schools!

Womonspace Womonspace is a social and recreational society that was founded in 1981 to serve the needs of the lesbian community in Edmonton and area. Our members participate in events such as dances, games night, family skating party and annual golf tournament. The society also interacts with and supports organizations in the community such as HIV Edmonton, The Pride Centre, Edmonton Rainbow Business Association and Camp fYrefly. As we begin our next 30 years, we are looking to increase the scope of our activities in order to provide a non-threatening way for women to meet other women in a comfortable recreational atmosphere. We are excited about being able to utilize the excellent facilities available at HIV Edmonton and will host activities such as potluck suppers, movie night, crib and scrabble tournaments, coffee house/ jam sessions, etc. During this year’s Pride Festival we plan to enter a float in the parade, staff an information booth on Churchill Square and assist at the Pride Family Picnic. We will conclude events with a Pride Dance on June 16 at Hellenic Hall. We look forward to collaborating with our community to make the Edmonton Pride Festival memorable for all!

The Imperial Sovereign Court
The Imperial Sovereign Court of the Wild Rose (ISCWR) would like to introduce themselves. The ISCWR is one chapter in an organization known as the International Court System (ICS) formed in 1965. The chapter covers the area of Red Deer and North in Alberta. There are 65 chapters in Canada, the United States and Mexico making the ICS the second largest Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) organization in the World. The Society’s mission is to raise funds, through activities organized by the ISCWR, for charities and other organizations that either provide direct services to the LGBT community of Edmonton or work to promote an accepting attitude towards LGBT individuals in the greater community. The Court is run by a Board of Directors and is the oldest registered LGBT non-profit group in the Province. Each year, an Emperor and Empress are elected to reign for the year. Their roles are to be goodwill ambassadors for the organization and to support the Aims and Objectives of the Court by planning activities throughout their reign. Each year the Emperor, Empress and their Upper House choose charities to support during their reigning year. The monies raised are given out at the Annual Charity Ball in August. Past recipients of donations include: Stollery Children’s Hospital,
Canadian Cancer Society, Edmonton area Neonatal Intensive Care Units, Society for Safe and Caring Schools, HIV Edmonton, Emily Morgan Foundation, Pride Centre of Edmonton, WIN House, John M. Kerr Memorial Scholarship, S.P.C.A, Camp fYrefly and the Canadian Diabetes Association, to mention a few. Last year, the Court was instrumental, in conjunction with HIV Edmonton, in starting a camp for children that are affected by AIDS. The Millicent Red Diamond Retreat was held this past summer and was a great success. With the support of the ISCWR, the Retreat will continue to help these children. 2012 marks the thirty-sixth Anniversary of the ISCWR. After thirty six years of noble deeds, the ISCWR has many reasons to feel proud. We are now a strong, viable and important member of the LGBT community with a strong link to the straight community through our ongoing partnerships. We have achieved many milestones for equality, and today the Imperial Sovereign Court of the Wild Rose attracts people of all backgrounds, sexual orientation and ethnicities, reflecting the positive change in mainstream attitudes towards sexual minorities and the creation of a more inclusive society. Saturday, June 9 Pride Parade Noon Watch us take Pride to the streets of Edmonton. The parade starts at
108 St and travels Eastbound on 102 Ave to 99 St. Come see the beautiful sea of color and wonderful display of individuality. Celebration on the Square presented by TD 1:00PM Follow the parade to Sir Winston Churchill Square for an afternoon filled with fabulous music, dancing, great food and lots of fun. Our exhibitors have a wide range of offerings and resources. Looking for something a little quieter?
