Summer festivals in Old Strathcona are a

Another glorious summer kicks off in Old Strathcona, a community where art and culture is alive and the Avenue thrums with a vibe of adventure and creativity. All of this fun – the great pedestrian experience – happens because of the people who get behind it. Festivals require inspired organizers, a supportive business community and a small army of volunteers. Chianti Café has been part of Old Strathcona for 30 years, and office administrator Mari Chartier says they feel fortunate to be at the center of the action and involved in the community. “It has always been important to us to be a part of the community. From our longstanding history with the Fringe, to Freewill Shakespeare, Art Walk and so many other festivals, non-profits and fundraising events, it’s a no brainer to us to support this vi-
brant and wonderful community that surrounds us. For us, being able to give back fills us with a sense of pride and satisfaction. It’s a win-win for all of us to support each other and continue to make Whyte Ave. one of the best hot spots in the city.” Ice on Whyte/Sand on Whyte festival producer Wanda Bornn couldn’t agree more. “The many festivals that take place in Old Strathcona add to the overall community vibrancy through art, culture, design, music and more,” says Bornn. “The upcoming events, the Blues on Whyte Block Party, Sand on Whyte and the Whyte Avenue Art Walk are an excellent example of festivals working together with the Old Strathcona Businesses by adding to the vibrancy that contributes to the overall visitor experience in Old Strathcona.”
It’s that same passion and vision that drives the success of Whyte Avenue Art Walk, now in its 22nd year. The Paint Spot owner and Art Walk producer Kim Fjordbotten wanted to see artists creating outdoors, engaging with the public and selling their art, much like one would experience in European cities. Thus, Art Walk was launched with a handful of artists covering a small portion of streetscape, and has grown to 450 artists, spanning eight blocks of Whyte Ave., two side streets and adjacent parks. “The success of Art Walk would not be realized without the cooperation and enthusiasm of business, who generously give up their storefronts for the weekend and support the festival, often through donations or in-kind contributions.” However, it takes a village and no festival would function without the heart and dedication of volunteers, says Fjordbotten,
“It really is a remarkable network of community support.” Long-time volunteer Walter Kehl, began supporting Art Walk in 2005. He sees volunteerism as an opportunity to make a positive mark on the world, a world he says is in need of positive impact. For this reason, Kehl helps out with many local causes and festivals, “I feel that the act of volunteering at the Walk – or for that matter, anywhere I volunteer – puts smiles on many faces (including mine). I keep coming back because it is great to showcase art from all over Alberta to the public, and that makes for a cause that I am only happy to champion through volunteering.” Therein lies the root of a successful, thriving and creative community – vision, cooperation, support and inspiration.

The Rust Magic Street Mural Festival is gearing up for a second year, ready to brighten streetscapes and businesses around Edmonton with imaginative art and fresh ideas. The street art festival is the brainchild of Fresh Canvas Art Co. creative directors Trevor Peters and Annaliza Toledo, who strive to transform Edmonton’s vertical landscapes into bold and inspired canvases.
In its first year, between Sept. 1-4, 2016, Rust Magic sprouted 15 large-scale murals throughout Edmonton, painted by 14 local and international artists over the course of four days. Not only does Rust Magic give street artists a legitimate platform, through which to express their creativity and talent, but Edmontonians benefit from fresh new takes on dreary and tired wallscapes.
The 2017 festival is even more ambitious, running from July 21-31, with a goal of contributing a minimum of 20 new murals, largely in the high density areas of 124 St., downtown and Old Strathcona. In much the same way that Whyte Avenue Art Walk offers art lovers and appreciators the chance to engage with artists as they create, Rust Magic creates much the same opportunity, to witness the creation of these murals, essentially creating a relationship between the artist and their art.
downtown is awash in a stunning array of street art, that not only has become an attraction, but beautifies quirky sidewalk alleys and lanes that would otherwise be dreary and dark. And after the 2011 earthquake that devastated Christchurch, New Zealand, it was the efforts of artists, seeking beauty and meaning in the rubble, who sought healing through the art that has put the city back on the map, as a street art destination, some of which can be viewed at: christchurchstreetart.co.nz.
The City of Edmonton benefits from the beautification of its urban landscape, making it more walkable, creating visual proof, affirming what Edmonton is already known for, a city that supports the arts. As the cityscape evolves into a great painted lady, it has the opportunity to become a destination for viewing amazing public art. Including international artists alongside talented local artists, makes it a truly global experience.
