The nation may have celebrated 21 years of freedom recently, but the majority of South Africans feel there is little to smile about. The country is still recovering from the outbreak of barbaric xenophobic attacks that placed a dark cloud of doom and gloom over the nation. There is, however, always some or other reason to celebrate and in typical South African fashion, the captivating world of dance has provided a much-needed escape from the brutality facing us on a daily basis. Coinciding with Freedom Day on 27 April, the Kopano Theatre Club kicked off their North West tour at the Sanlam Auditorium (NWU-Pukke campus) in what was the first of many stops scheduled for the province over the coming months. The travelling dance project, made up of a team of 15 crew members, including dancers, musicians and narrators, will wrap up their tour in Rustenburg, in August. Titled “Celebrating South African National Orders”, the initiative is aimed at reaffirming national heritage, history, culture and dignity and further aims to reignite the promotion of national pride and identity. Through the powerful medium of dance, the significance of these orders is highlighted. As the choreographer, Boitumelo Mokwene is at the core of the production and delighted to be able to share this rapture of movement and artistry with the people of North West. A series of workshops will also be hosted on each Saturday and will be based on a variety of dance-related themes. Uit my Dagboek: Nuwe pa: Gaan slaap maar vroeg Dustin Wetdewich

My vrou vra elke dag vir my waarom my oë so rooi is as ek van die werk af kom. Die antwoord is eintlik eenvoudig, ek slaap nie genoeg in die aand nie. My redenasie was nog altyd as ek tot 04:00 in die oggend kan kuier en steeds funksioneer by die werk, dan behoort die pajama drills hanteerbaar te wees. Wat ek nie aan gedink het nie, is die feit dat dit nie net een of twee aande is nie, maar elke liewe aand. Omdat ek so ’n dierbare vrou het, word ek soms nie wakker wanneer hy die eerste keer wakker word nie. Sy los my om te slaap. Maar meer dikwels word ek saam met haar wakker as Aiden huil. Dikwels is hy honger en raak onmiddellik weer aan die slaap na sy voeding, gewoonlik 02:30 en 05:00. Maar sodra die horlosie 06:30 slaan is hy wakker en wil hy gesels. Dan staan ek maar op en gesels saam met hom, ek

sukkel om my oë oop te hou, kort-kort voel ek my oë toeval, net om deur een van sy “woordjies” weer wakker gemaak te word. As my oë oopgaan kyk in ’n glimlaggende baba se gesig vas. Dan gaan my wekker af en dis tyd vir werk. Party dae is beter as ander, maar op slegte dae sluip ek by die werk in en probeer my bes om met so min mense as moontlik te praat, want my gemoedstoestand is glad nie jolig nie. My vrou sê gereeld vir my dat ek vroeër in die aand moet gaan slaap. Dit is beslis die waarheid omdat ek eers kort voor middernag in die bed kom klim. Maar dit is vir my ’n aanpassing, omdat ek nog altyd ’n naguil was. Vir my eie beswil en die mense om my gaan ek maar vanaand om 20:00 al in die bed wees. Met my geluk, sodra ek besluit om vroeër te gaan slaap, slaap Aiden deur. Ek dink soms hy doen dit met opset, want sy glimlag in die oggende lyk heeltemal te selfvoldaan.

MTN customers are ‘gatvol’ after cell phone burglary at shop Victor Boqo

Outraged MTN customers are still obliged to pay the contracts of cell phones that were stolen in a burglary at MooiRivier Mall on 24 January. Two of the twenty customers concerned told the Gazette that their cell phones were in for repairs when thieves gained entry into the MTN store through the roof. Selina Kuena pays R449 per month for a Samsung S4 and Joel Litelu pays R320 for his Nokia Lumia 1320. These phones were among the phones, a laptop, tablet and an undisclosed amount of cash that were stolen in the robbery. The alarm did not go off during the burglary and the incident was only discovered when the staff arrived for work the following day and found the safe standing open. Expecting some sort of recourse the customers provided affidavits as requested, only to be told that MTN’s insurance does not cover a third party. The store manager said there was nothing she could do to help them get their phones back. The victims, who describe themselves as ‘loyal MTN customers’ were not even offered courtesy phones and had no option but to buy new handheld devices. Despite the fact that MTN expects them to keep paying their contracts as usual, Litelu has already stopped payment and Kuena also plans to stop her debit order. Both customers had bought their devices from the same store and have now lost all their

personal information. They say they are ‘gatvol’ of being sent from pillar to post for the last three months and finally being taken for a ride. They have lost all faith in the service provider to whom they entrusted their assets and are shocked at the level of service they received. Potchefstroom police spokesperson, W/O Mpho Manyobe told the Gazette that the case was closed because the devices could not be traced, even after the serial numbers had been circulated. There have subsequently been no arrests in this regard. After a Gazette enquiry, Eddie Moyce, chief customer experience officer at MTN said the service provider had decided to replace the phones that were stolen from the store without any cost to the affected customers. He said the store is in the process of locating replacement stock and will be liaising with the affected customers to confirm the replacement. “MTN takes the security of its stores and the safety of its employees very seriously and takes reasonable safety precautions to secure equipment that is in its custody. In instances of theft, MTN has to comply with insurance underwriting processes and undertake the necessary due diligence before any claims can be settled. The burglary is an unfortunate and regrettable incident that is targeting the industry. MTN wishes to apologise profusely to the affected customers for any inconvenience caused,” he said.

A municipal traffic officer at the scene where a BMW collided with a blue VW Polo in Batloung Street on 1 May. According to the Ikageng police spokesperson, W/O Ishmael Mohutsioa, the BMW was in the process of overtaking when the driver of the Polo decided to make a Uturn. The BMW flipped onto its roof and the driver was trapped inside. Both drivers sustained minor injuries and a case of reckless and negligent driving is being investigated. Twelve caught in possession of stolen copper cables Boitekong and Northam Police together with mine security officials apprehended 12 suspects aged between 18 and 55 for possession of copper cables. The incident took place on the R510 in Boitekong at about 05:00 on 7 May. Northam Police responded after receiving a tip-off about a suspicious Toyota Quantum on the R510. The police were assisted by mine security officials during the operation. Allegedly, Boitekong Police were also informed and the suspicious vehicle was pulled over. All suspects were found in the vehicle that was travelling from Northam towards Rustenburg. While searching the vehicle, copper cables with the estimated value of R200 000 were found. A firearm with six live rounds was also

found in the car. The suspects were arrested and are expected to appear in Rustenburg Magistrates Court soon. Die Potchefstroom Brand Beskermingsvereniging (PBBV) is nie net daar vir brandveiligheid nie. Op 26 April omstreeks 03:00 het ’n lid van die PBBV per radio vir bystand gevra nadat sy verdagtes in haar erf naby die huis op hul plaas opgemerk het. Te danke aan die vinnige optrede van mede-boere en die Potchefstroom-polisie, is die verdagtes verjaag. Hulle het ongelukkig weggekom, maar

die mense is veilig. Die voorsitter van die PBBV, Rudi du Toit, het verduidelik hoe hulle kommunikasienetwerk werk. Potchefstroom en die buitewyke word in vier dele gedeel. In elk van die vier dele is daar PBBV lede wat ook polisiereserviste is. Lede word in radiogroepe ingedeel waar elke lid sy eie roepteken het. Die polisie het ook ’n radio wat ingestel is op dieselfde frekwensie as wat die PBBV lede gebruik.

Chinese burger agter tralies vir onwettige vuurwapen Die polisie in Reivilo ondersoek ‘n saak van die onwettige besit van ‘n vuurwapen en ammunisie sonder ‘n lisensie, nadat ‘n 41-jarige Chinese burger op Dinsdag 5 Mei omstreeks 16:55 in Reivilo in hegtenis geneem is. Die polisie was besig om die winkel wat deur die verdagte besit word, te deursoek vir onwettige sigarette. Tydens die soektog is ‘n vuurwapen wat met drie rondes ammunisie gelaai is, in ’n houer gevind. Die verdagte kon nie vir die

polisie ’n lisensie vir die vuurwapen toon nie en is in hegtenis geneem. Die polisie het beslag gelê op die vuurwapen, asook 45 pakkies (20) onwettige sigarette. Die eienaar is ook beboet. ‘n Voorlopige ondersoek het getoon dat die vuurwapen aan ‘n polisiebeampte behoort. People are reminded to have their influenza vaccination as soon as the vaccine becomes available at a pharmacy or health care centre. The National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) recently announced a delay in the availability of the influenza vaccine for 2015. It said there had been a change in influenza viruses circulating during the 2014 season. As a result, the influenza strains included in the 2015/16 vaccines have had to be changed. This resulted in global delays in manufacturing and quality control of the 2015 southern hemisphere vaccine. Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that can cause mild to severe illness. It can also aggravate chronic health problems or lead to pneumonia, for example, which in turn could lead to death. Doctor Robyn Holgate, from ER24, urges people to get vaccinated. “It is never too late to vaccinate, even though it may take up to two weeks to develop sufficient protection for the winter months. I am glad the correct strains have been included in the vaccination for the coming season, even if it meant the vaccine arriving a little late,” she said. There are people who say they have been vaccinated in the past but still got influenza and, therefore, choose not to get vaccinated again. Dr Holgate explained that they may have been infected with one of the strains not included in the current vaccine. She explained that the influenza vaccine is usually a preparation against the three most probable strains of the virus for the current flu season. These are an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like virus, an A/Switzerland/9715293/2013(H3N2)-like virus and AB/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus. Pregnant women, irrespective of the stage of pregnancy, should get vaccinated as they are at higher risk. Women who are still within their two weeks after delivery should also have the vaccination. Dr Holgate said a recent South Afri-

Other high-risk groups that must have the vaccine include: Adults and children who are receiving regular medical care for conditions like chronic pulmonary and cardiac disease, chronic renal diseases, diabetes and similar metabolic disorders. People who are immunosuppressed (including HIVinfected people) and those who are morbidly obese (BMI≥40 kg/m2) should also have the vaccine. Adults and children who come into contact with those who are high-risk. People over the age of 65. Children between the ages of six months and five years. Dr Holgate said healthcare workers must also have the vaccination. “By the very nature of their work, they may be more exposed to viruses than other members of the public. It is vital they ensure their own health by staying healthy, washing their hands and using appropriate barrier protection. The influenza vaccine is one way of ensuring they stay at work during the winter months,” she said. It is important to note that influenza is different from a cold. The key difference between colds and influenza is the very high temperatures one gets with the associated symptoms of influenza. People usually develop influenza suddenly. Symptoms include: Fever Headaches Cough Runny or blocked nose Body aches Tiredness Gastric flu Speaking about gastric flu, Holgate said viruses are very common. People may talk about having gastric flu. This may be a virus doing its seasonal rounds which causes gastro-type signs and symptoms, for example, abdominal cramps and diarrhoea. Everyone who attended the event wore red and each one was handed either a red or pink ribbon.Tlokwe’s executive mayor, Kgotso Khumalo, addressed a number of issues, including moral regeneration. He encouraged people to love one another and embrace each other. He also spoke out against xenophobia, urging his audience to stand together and not fight one another. Khotso emphasised the importance of the church within the community and the role it plays. As mens dink aan

Empower children to say ‘no’ to underage drinking There is a high chance that teenagers have or will have an encounter with alcohol either through experimenting or through someone else’s drinking. “As a parent, it is your responsibility to protect them from underage drinking by teaching them that alcohol is for adult consumption only. You need to equip them with the right tools and knowledge to say no to alcohol when they are away from your supervision.” This is the advice from Naazia Ismail, South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) project manager. Teens have less physical tolerance to the effects of alcohol, and their brains which are still developing, are more susceptible to alcohol-related harm. In a 2010 publication, the US National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism stated that most studies show the benefits of allowing children to drink in the home or controlled environment are non-existent. “This means that as a parent, keeping them safe includes saying no to them using alcohol at home,” said Ismail.

According to SADAG, it is an adult’s responsibility to keep communication open with teenagers in order for them to understand the consequences and dangers of underage drinking. Open communication also allows guidance to be given to teenagers with how to say no to peer pressure. Listen to your children: The more open your relationship with your children is, the more likely they will feel comfortable with talking to you about any issues, including alcohol. Listen to them, don’t judge and let them know they can come to you and trust you. Teach them to deal with peer pressure: Give them some examples of how to say ‘no’ without losing face. If your child is offered alcohol, here are some examples of what he or she can say, which includes using white lies that involve you or the other parent: . “No, thanks.” . “Not today, thanks.” . “I don’t like the way it (beer, wine, cider) tastes.” . “I’ll be grounded for life if my dad finds out I’ve been drinking.”

. “My mom will not teach me how to drive if she finds out I have been drinking.” . “I need all my brain cells for rugby practice (math test, homework) tomorrow.” If your child is offered alcohol, here are some examples of what he or she can do: . Leave the scene . Change the subject . Laugh it off Teach them to say no to adults: They should learn to say no to adults who send them to the tavern or the shop to buy alcohol, or adults who offer them a taste or sip of an alcoholic drink and promise not to tell. Invest in recreational activities and in spending quality time with your children: Encourage your teens to take part in activities that develop interests and skills that will help them feel good about themselves without the use of alcohol. Hobbies, school events, sports, healthy relationships, and volunteer work are examples of such activities. Talk about substance abuse: If you don’t tell them the facts, someone else will – and the ‘facts’ they get from

Several bands and artists, including the Pioneer Brass and the Bandura Express, took to the stage during the Autumn Garden Soiree hosted by the NWU Gallery at the Botanical Garden on Thursday, 30 April. As the melodies wafted through the air, blankets were spread across the lawn, wine was tasted and picnic baskets were unpacked. Creatives and buyers were also allowed the opportunity of meeting the winemakers from the new TV hit show Sediment as hosted by Kyknet on Friday evenings. The team is currently making their way through the country offering the nation lots to sip and savour.

Is dié mites oor tuinmaak regtig waar? Philip van Dyk

Daar’s soveel mites oor tuinmaak in omloop dat ek besluit het om ’n bietjie dieper te grawe en agter die waarheid te kom. Tuinmaak is lekker en lonend, en elkeen doen dit graag op sy eie manier. Maar af en toe hoor ’n mens van “goue reëls” waarby jy moet hou as jy ’n mooi en gesonde tuin wil hê. Hoe weet jy wat is waar en wat nie? Kom ons skei die koring van die kaf. Dis beter om jou grasperk saans nat te spuit, ten einde verdamping te voorkom Vals Trouens, deur snags water te gee, stel jy jou grasperk bloot aan swampatogene wat in koel, klam toestande en donker plekke floreer. As jy jou grasperk laat in die dag of saans water gee, kry die swam presies wat hy nodig het om te floreer en sal dit jou grasperk siek maak. Onthou net, maak die gras eerder vroeg soggens nat, want dan kry dit kans om deur die dag uit te droog terwyl jy steeds verdamping uit die grond self beperk. Bottels water op jou grasperk keer dat die buurt se honde hul besigheid daar doen Waar en vals Dié teorie is nog nie bewys nie. Dalk word party diere afgeskrik deur die water wat in die bottel beweeg as hulle daaraan snuffel, of moontlik ontsenu hul eie weerkaatsing hulle. Daar is ander, mooier maniere – soos mure en heinings – om te keer dat hondebesigheid jou grasperk bederf. Kap ’n spyker in ’n avokadoboom se stam om dit tot vrugbaarheid te “skok”

As jou suurlemoenboom se blare geel word, sal dit help as iemand teen die boom urineer Waar en vals Geel blare dui daarop dat die plant ’n ystertekort het, en urine bevat nie yster nie, trouens, die suur daarin kan die boom benadeel. En tog bevat urine ook stikstof, fosfor en kalium, wat beteken dit kan – in baie klein doserings – as vloeibare kunsmis dien. Blombeddings moet skoongevee word om tuinpeste uit te hou Vals Dit was dekades lank die in-ding om elke dooie blaartjie wat op die grond beland, op te vee, omdat dit kwansuis mooier sou lyk en die lugvloei in die grond sou verbeter. Daar is selfs geglo dat ’n laag blare in beddings die grond van stikstof ontneem, omdat dit met die plante moet meeding om voedingstowwe. Deur die grond “skoon” te hou, het tuiniers gedink hulle kan miere, slakke en knaagdiere verminder. ‘n Laag blare, stokkies en dooie blomme het in werklikheid ’n belangrike rol te speel. So ’n “kombers” vorm ’n natuurlike deklaag wat verdamping verminder, vogtigheid behou en keer dat die grond uitdroog. As jy die grond skoonvee, gaan elke druppel dou of water wat uit onderste grondlae kom, verlore omdat daar niks is om dit vas te hou nie. Plante moet dikwels deur die groeiseisoen bemes word Vals Die teendeel is eerder waar: Te veel bemesting is skadelik vir plante. Te veel bemesting, of die verkeerde soort, soos vars

hoendermis, kan wortels brand of tot vinnige, maar skraal, groei aanleiding gee. Onthou ook dat peulplante soos boontjies, ertjies, klawer, lupiene en akasias hul eie stikstof vervaardig en dus nie byvoegings daarvan moet kry nie. As jou plante te veel stikstof kry, lei dit tot sagte, welige groei wat die plant vatbaar vir swamsiektes en ander plae maak. Onthou net die belangrikste voedingstowwe vir plantgroei is stikstof, fosfor en kalium; gebalanseerde bemestingstowwe bevat ’n mengsel van al drie die elemente. Dis beter om nie te veel bemesting te gee nie, want baie van die voedingswaarde sal eenvoudig wegspoel voor jou plante dit kan gebruik. Lees die aanwysings op die sak deeglik voor jy korrelkunsmis toedien of kies ’n stadig vrystellende korrelkunsmis waar al die voedingstowwe nie gelyktydig nie, maar geleidelik met verloop van tyd, vrygestel word. Oorweeg organiese bemestingstowwe soos beenmeel en kelp, wat voedingstowwe in heelwat laer konsentrasies bevat en oor langer tydperke vrystel. Dis goed vir jou plante as jy gereeld jou beddings omspit Vals Net mooi die teenoorgestelde is waar. Dis beter om nie jou tuingrond om te spit nie. Dié geenbewerkingsmetode verbeter inderwaarheid die grondstruktuur omdat die lewende grondlae nie met dooie grond gemeng word nie en minder gekompakteer word. Maar as jy die grond omspit, is die struktuur in sy peetjie. Dit neem die natuur miljoene jare om ’n gesonde organiese grondstruktuur te vorm. Grond met ’n goeie struktuur werk soos ’n spons – dit hou water binne en skep ’n medium wat reënwater dieper die grond in lei en kalsium, magnesium, kalium en ander voedingstowwe aan die

plante beskikbaar stel. Jy kan nooit genoeg water gee nie Vals In werklikheid gee die meeste tuiniers hul plante te veel water, wat plante kan laat vrek omdat hul wortelstelsels nie suurstof kry nie. Die meeste tuiniers gee eerder te veel as te min water. Sorg liefs vir goeie dreinering, op enkele uitsonderings na is dit belangriker vir jou plante se gesondheid as water. Onthou net, terwyl plante hulle nog moet vestig nadat hulle uitgeplant is - selfs droogtebestande plante - moet hulle genoeg water kry. Maar as dit kom by water gee in die algemeen, is die goue reël dat jy een keer per week in warm, droë weer moet water gee. Onthou dat plante se waterbehoeftes verskil. Beplan verskillende sones in jou tuin met plante wat baie, matig en min water verbruik, dan is tuinnatmaak makliker en jou waterrekening kleiner. As jy op ’n warm dag water op plante in volson spuit, sal die blare skroei Vals Sogenaamde brandmerke of bruin kolle wat op plante se blare waargeneem word, kom gewoonlik van ’n swam of bakterie en is nie die gevolg van waterdruppels wat die son se strale versterk en die plant skroei nie. Dis moontlik dat dié mite weens besproeiing met brak water ontstaan het. Brak water bevat hoë vlakke van opgeloste soute, en wanneer die water verdamp, bly die soute agter, wat moontlik die blare kan brand. In gebiede waar brak water voorkom, moet tuiniers eerder reënwater vir besproeiingsdoeleindes opvang. Die enigste rede waarom ’n mens nie op die warmste tyd van die dag moet tuin natmaak nie, is om waterverlies weens verdamping te beperk. Tog, as jy sien jou plante verwelk omdat hulle dors is op ’n baie warm dag, is dit beter om hulle maar lafenis te gee.

Heerlike gebak....... pragtig versier met kersies Heerlike gebak - almal versier met ….. bessies!!! Kersiekoek Verhit oond tot 190° C. Bespuit twee panne met deursnit 17,5cm en voer uit met waspapier. Plaas 170g sagte margarien en 170g strooisuiker Helene Kluge in mengbak en klop goed tot romerig. Voeg 3 groot eiers by en klop goed. Sif 170g bruismeel en 5ml bakpoeier in en vou in. Verdeel tussen 2 koekpanne en maak gelyk bo. Bak 25 – 30 minute tot gaar. Keer uit op draadrak en laat afkoel. Versiersel: Meng 60g sagte botter met 110g gesifte versiersuiker. Ontpit 60g vars kersies, kap fyn en voeg by versiersuiker. Smeer tussen die lae. Bolaag: Plaas 170g strooisuiker, 1 eierwit, 15ml warm water en bie-tjie kremetart in mengbak en verhit liggies in die mikrogolf. Klop tot die mengsel dik is. Laat afkoel en smeer bo en aan kante van koek en laat stol. Druk 300g ontpitte kersies bo en op kante van die koek en laat stol. Swartwoudkoek Koop of bak ’n tweelaag sjokoladekoek en sny elke laag horisontaal in twee. Vulsel: Dreineer 2 x 410g rooi kersies en hou 200ml van die stroop. Ontpit kersies indien nodig en hou 12 eenkant vir versiering. Meng 40ml mielieblom en 200ml kersiestroop en kook tot dik en deursigtig. Kleur rooi met voedselkleursel en voeg kersies by. Meng en

laat afkoel. Strooi 15ml gelatien op 50ml water en laat week. Smelt mengsel in mikrogolf. Klits 500ml room tot amper styf en klits gelatien geleidelik by; klits tot styf. Klits 15ml strooisuiker by en geur met bietjie Kirsch. Besprinkel die koeklae met Kirsch. Smeer kersiemengsel en roommengsel om die beurt op koeklae en druk liggies vas. Smeer room bo-op en langsaan. Bespuit met roomrosies en versier met kersies. Verkoel goed voor opdiening. Sjokoladekoek Voorverhit die oond tot 180° C. Sif saam twee keer: 360g koekmeelblom, 200ml kakao, 5ml sout en 7ml koeksoda. Voeg by 375ml strooisuiker. Meng 375ml water, 5ml vanieljegeursel en 275ml mayonaise. Voeg stadig by die droë mengsel. Meng goed, maar nie te veel nie. Skep in twee 20-cm voorbereide koekpanne en bak 30 – 45 minute. Keer uit op draadrakkie en laat heeltemal afkoel. Vulsel: Klits 250ml vars room en geur met 12,5ml strooisuiker en vanieljegeursel. Swartwoudkoek Smeer ’n lagie aarbeikonfyt oor een koeklaag, gevolg deur ’n lagie room. Plaas die ander koeklaag bo-op. Skep die res van die room bo-op en versier met heel vars aarbeie. Butter cake Grease a deep 20cm round cake pan, cover

base with baking paper. Combine together: 275g castor sugar, 3 eggs, 250ml plain flour, 125ml self-raising flour, 2ml bicarbonate of soda and 125ml milk. Beat on medium speed in a food mixer until mixture is smooth. Spread into prepared pan. Bake in moderately slow oven over 1¼ hours. Stand a few minutes before turning onto a wire rack to cool. Top cake with cream frosting and maraschino cherries. Frosting: Beat 125g soft butter and 240g icing sugar and 30ml milk with electric beater until as white as possible. Cream cheese lemon cake Grease a 21cm ring cake pan. Combine the following: 125g butter, 125g cream cheese, 30ml grated lemon rind, 250ml castor sugar, 2 eggs, 110g self-raising flour and 75g flour. Beat in electric mixer on low speed until combined. Spoon mixture into the prepared pan. Bake in moderately slow oven over 55 minutes. Stand a few minutes before turning onto a wire rack o cool. Dust with icing sugar and serve with strawberries. Biscotti with cream Preheat oven to 180° C. Spread 125g blanched almonds on a baking tray and place in oven for 4 minutes until nuts are golden brown; cool. Biscotti: Brush a 26 x 4,5cm x 8cm bar tin

with oil and line the base with baking paper. Place 3 egg whites in a clean, dry mixing bowl. Beat until stiff peaks form. Gradually add 125ml castor sugar and a little vanilla essence; beat constantly until thick and glossy and the sugar has dissolved. Add 180g flour and almonds and fold ingredients together, using a metal spoon. Spread into prepared tin and smooth the surface. Bake for 25 minutes; remove from oven and cool completely in tin. Turn out loaf and wrap in aluminium foil. Refrigerate overnight. Preheat oven to 160°C. Brush two baking trays with oil. Using a sharp serrated knife, cut loaf into 5mm slices. Arrange the slices on two greased oven trays and bake 30 minutes until biscotti are lightly golden and brown. Serve with fresh berries and beaten cream.

Combined Potch Town team comes out tops at Potjiekos Day Tournament Piet de Jager

Klerksdorp Bowls Club hosted their second annual Potjiekos Day Tournament on Friday 1 May 2015. Thirty-four teams entered, meaning that 136 players were in action, including the

team of Pieter van Niekerk, all the way from Koffiefontein, on their second visit to Klerksdorp’s Potjiekos Day. A day like this can only be successful with the support of sponsors and donations and the organisers would like to thank Ben de Swart and Ettienne Stoltz of Oranje Toyo-

ta, Dawie Barnard of Raddix, Rhona du Plessis of Perfect Nails, Alan and Germaine Kirkland and Mike’s Kitchen for their support. Thanks to Henry Peens and Dirk Pretorius who were in charge of the Potjiekos pots and to all the other members working in the background, well done for a great success.

The winners for the day were the combined team of Potch Town and PCC: Ronnie Palmer, Jean du Plessis (Potch Town), Jakkie Bezuidenhout and Dawie van Rensburg (PCC). The runners-up were Don van Vuuren, Charles Kingsley, Herman Pretorius and Yvonne Glaser of Klerksdorp.

MMA steek boks verby Dustin Wetdewich

MMA (gemengde vegkuns) is besig om boks te vervang as die gunsteling vegsport. Boks se laaste hoop volgens my was met die groot geldgeveg tussen Manny Pacquiao en Floyd Mayweather, maar na ’n swak vertoning van veral Mayweather dink ek boks se skip het gesink. MMA is egter ook nie sonder sy swak vertonings nie. Die geveg tussen Gideon Drotschie en Tumelo Maputha onlangs in die EFC het ook dieselfde soort vertoning opgelewer. Drotschie het vir drie rondtes om Maputha gedans op baie dieselfde manier soos Mayweather probeer wegbly het van Pacquiao af. Die groot verskil was dat Maputha nie so aggressief soos Pacquiao was nie. Maputha het net nooit die afstand tussen hom en Drotschie probeer toemaak nie, met die gevolg dat Drotschie die geveg met punte gewen het nadat hy ten minste ’n paar skoppe kon land. Daarby moet gesê word dat in MMA vuiste nie die enigste gevaar is nie. So,

vir Maputha om die afstand toe te maak maak hy homself oop om grond toe gevat te word, waar hy weet Drotschie baie sterker as hy is. Soos die naam aandui is MMA ’n mengelmoes van verskillende gevegskunste. Dit het begin met die vraag watter gevegskuns die mees effektiewe een is? Dit het egter ontwikkel as ’n sport op sy eie. Hoewel dit nog ’n relatiewe jong sport is, is dit reeds die vinnigste groeiende sport in die wêreld. In die VSA maak dit goeie vordering om geldgewys boks verby te steek. In Suid-Afrika is ’n MMA vegter reeds geldelik beter af as ’n bokser. Die rede vir die gewildheid van die sport dink ek is te danke aan wat dit bied. In die verlede het stoeiers gestoei en boksers het geboks. Nou word aanhangers van elkeen van dié soort sport bymekaar getrek by in sport wat iets van alles bied. Die ouens wat meer van die tegniese aspekte hou kyk na MMA-gevegte vir die grondwerk, tipies aan stoei, die Braziliaanse Jiu Jitsu of Judo aanhangers. Vir die aanhangers wat daarvan hou om te kyk hoe twee

manne spreekwoordelik bolle rol, is daar ook iets in MMA. Die boksers, skopboksers en Muay Thai vegters vind ook aanklank by dié sport. Selfs die puriste kan nie meer met sekerheid sê dat boks nog ’n lang raklewe het nie. As boks aanhou boksers oplewer soos Mayweather, gaan aanhangers daarvan almal begin oorloop en liewer geld betaal om MMA te gaan kyk.
