Skolier ry man dood, hou nie stil by toneel Dustin Wetdewich ’n 27-jarige man is Dinsdag omstreeks 23:30 dood nadat hy in Albert Luthulirylaan raakgery is. Die bestuurder van die Toyota Fortuner wat hom getref het, het glo nie stilgehou na die ongeluk nie en is later by ’n adres in Malherbestraat gearresteer. ’n 18-jarige skolier van Potchefstroom, Jacobus Lodewyk Bouwer, het

Woensdagoggend in die hof verskyn op ’n aanklag van strafbare mansslag. Netcare 911 was eerste op die toneel waar hulle die 27-jarige mnr. Johan Henning van Carletonville dood verklaar het. Na wat die Herald verneem was Henning te voet oppad van sy nefie af toe hy getref is. Uit die erns van sy beserings meen beamptes van Netcare 911 dat Henning teen ’n hoë spoed getref moes gewees

het. Die polisie is ontbied en nadat hulle die area gepatroleer het, het hulle die Fortuner in Malherbestraat gevind. Die bestuurder van die voertuig is kort daarna in hegtenis geneem. Volgens Kaptein Mvula Chaka, woordvoerder van die polisie, het Bouwer Woensdag in die hof verskyn en is vrygelaat op R1 000 borgtog. Hy verskyn weer op 9 Oktober in die hof.

Will the real major-general please stand up? Victor Boqo “Looks can be deceiving” A 24-year-old con woman enjoyed a high profile blue light escort from Klerksdorp to Potchefstroom by TRT (tactical response team) members at 10:30 on 13 September. This comes after the con woman who called herself “Lerato Mahlangu”, a younger sister of the late ANC’s freedom fighter; Solomon Mahlangu pretended to be a major-general in the office of the national commissioner, Riah Phiyega. Mahlangu who was on foot, phoned a senior police official to be escorted to attend a meeting at the Potchefstroom Hospital representing the national commissioner. After she made the call, she was escorted with a police vehicle to the meeting. Upon arrival at the hospital, she informed the police that the meeting had been postponed until 14:00. The fake major-general instructed the police to take her to Potchefstroom Dam and that’s where everything began to smell a little fishy. At the dam it was discovered that there were no bookings made for her. In fact, the real major-general was in a meeting with Phiyega in Pretoria. The woman was questioned by the police and asked to produce her official appointment certificate but she was unable to do so. She was taken to the police station for questioning, and the police got the shock of their lives when they discovered that the ‘woman’ they had been transporting was, in fact, a man!

The provincial police spokesman, Brig. Thulani Ngubane confirmed this and states that the man was arrested for impersonating a police official. The man informed the police that he is from in Mamelodi Pretoria. This is not the first time he has impersonated someone else. He was arrested in the Free State for the same misconduct some time ago. Ngubane said that after identifying himself as the sister of Mahlangu the con man would then be invited as a speaker at church gatherings and other forums and at times collect monies in the name of the Mahlangu family, though the suspect has no proof whatsoever that he is linked to the Mahlangu family,” he said. During the Herald’s investigations, the con man first arrived in the city last year during the by-elections and is an ANC member. One of the women who didn’t want to be named confirmed this and said, he even stayed at her place for months, claiming to have been sent by the ANC’s head office to work and assist with the by-elections. At that stage he also pretended to be a woman who called herself “Belinda Lerato Mahlangu.” But the ANC has distanced itself from the con man. Thabo Mosiane, the ANC’s chief whip said “The law must take its course and said the party would liaise with the national office about who this person really is as they too, were suspicious of him.” The con man appeared in the Potchefstroom Magistrates Court this Monday. He was wearing blue jeans an ANC T-shirt and a woman’s wig. He was calm, and even laughing, when he appeared before Magistrate Makgaola Foso. Even the court was confused about where he comes from as he claimed to be from Witbank when questioned by the court. The matter was postponed until 22 September for further investigations and for the police to investigate his identity. Ngubane is pleading with the community to provide any information about this con man or any person, who may have been robbed or misled by the suspect.

Die NWU Pukke het hulle nuwe Sonkar, Sirius X25 a.k.a Witblits op 16 September onthul. Dié motortjie gaan aan die 2014 Sasol Solar Uitdaging, ’n internasionale gebeurtenis waar universiteitstudente geleentheid kry om son-aangedrewe motors te ontwerp en te bestuur, deelneem. Die PUK studente is die verdedigende kampioene. Hulle het met hulle vorige motor, die Batmobile, ‘n gesamentlike eerste plek ingepalm en vier rekords gebreek tydens hul eerste poging by die 2012 Sasol Solar Uitdaging. Nie ’n druppel petrol is gebruik nie. Deelnemers is toegelaat om hul motor se battery met DC krag te laai voordat

die wedren begin het, maar op die pad moes daar uitsluitlik van sonkrag gebruik gemaak word. Nou het die Batmobile afgetree om plek te maak vir ’n splinternuwe motortjie vir vanjaar se Sasol Solar Uitdaging. “Die reëls van die kompetisie verander om nuwe tegnologie in ag te neem. Dus, jy moet ’n nuwe een bou. Die Sirius X25 word heeltemal deur die studente self gebou, weeg ‘n skrale 140kg en kan snelhede van meer as 100km/u bereik” sê prof. Albert Helberg, spanleier. Soos met die eerste motor, sal die nuwe een ook ’n eensitplek voertuig met nét die basiese binne hê. Daar sal ’n stuurwiel, rempedaal, versneller en verskillende verpligte ligskakelaars wees. “Daar is geen luukshede soos ’n ra-

dio of lugversorger nie,” sê Raynard du Preez, wat sy meestersgraad in elektriese ingenieurswese doen. Hy staan aan die hoof van die elektriese ontwerp en battery bestuurspan. Hy verduidelik dat dít die motor net swaarder sal maak. “Die uitdaging is om ’n motor te bou met die meeste krag binne die gewigslimiet - en natuurlik die begroting. Meganies is die nuwe motor baie dieselfde as sy voorganger, maar sal ligter en meer aërodinamies wees. Die hele elektriese sisteem is herontwerp, insluitend die sonpanele, batterysisteem en elektriese motor,” sê Du Preez. “Ons het baie navorsing gedoen om die regte chemiese samestelling vir die batterye te kry en het op lithium polymeer besluit, een van die nuwer en beste batterye.” Du Preez is een van vier na-

graadse studente wat beurte sal maak om die kar te bestuur. Die wedren vind plaas vanaf 27 September tot 4 Oktober en skop af in Pretoria. Daarvandaan na Port Elizabeth, via Bloemfontein en eindig in Kaapstad. Die NWUspan het ten doel om 5 000 km te ry deur ekstra opsionele roetes te ry tussen 58 km en 132 km wat klein dorpies langs die pad insluit. Hoe groter die afstand is wat die motor in die uitdaging ry, hoe meer punte kry die span. Die span wil ten alle koste soveel moontlik tyd agter die stuurwiel spandeer. Die rede? “Dis pret om die sonkar te bestuur,” sê Du Preez. “Dit is ’n heerlike gevoel om te weet jy is agter die stuur van ’n motor wat potensieel die toekoms van die outomobiel industrie is,” sê hy.

Rabies is a disease caused by a virus that is found in the saliva of infected animals. It can affect all mammals. Most of the time, it is transmitted to pets and people by bites, but open cuts can become contaminated as well. If rabies is not identified and treated, it causes painful death. The rabies virus attacks the central nervous system. Unfortunately, early signs of rabies in people are general symptoms like fever and headaches. As the disease progresses, neurological symptoms show up. These include insomnia, anxiety, confusion, paralysis,

excitation, hallucinations, agitation, hypersalivation, difficulty swallowing, and fear of water. People who contract rabies die within days of the appearance of these symptoms. Rabies is transmitted when an infected animal bites another animal or person, passing the virus in saliva. After initial infection, the virus enters a phase where it is difficult to detect. This phase can last for several days or several months. In some cases, the newly infected animal or person develops an effective immune response and

doesn’t get sick. In other cases, the virus is transported to the central nervous system. The incubation period for rabies can be several days or several years, but it is normally one to three months. Once the virus gets into the central nervous system, it acts quickly to cause disease. This is when the previously described symptoms appear. After that, the infected animal or person will die within days. If you think you have been bitten by an animal that might be rabid, the first

thing to do is wash the wound carefully, then call your doctor right away! Your doctor will figure out whether you need to receive a rabies vaccine. If you are a pet owner, be sure to keep vaccinations up to date for your dogs and cats. This will protect your pets and it may even help to protect you! If your pet is bitten get them to the veterinarian immediately. If there are stray or wild animals in your neighbourhood, call animal control so that they are removed. Don’t let your kids play with them or pet them!

Deursoek vir dwelms glo oor voorkoms Dustin Wetdewich

’n 23-jarige man sê hy is onwettig vir dwelms voor sy huis deursoek. JR Heath, ’n tatoeëerkunstenaar op Die Bult, is hoogs ontsteld omdat hy op 4 September omstreeks 11:00 volgens hom onwettig deur die polisie deursoek is vir dwelms. Volgens Heath het die voorval voor sy huis plaasgevind en het die polisie geen rede gehad om te vermoed dat hy dwelms aan hom het nie. Heath sê hy voel hulle het dit gedoen oor sy voorkoms. “Ek het sigbare tatoes, lang hare en dra oorbelle. Dit is waarom hulle my geteiken het. Dit is nie die eerste keer wat dit met my gebeur nie. Die vorige keer het die polisiebeampte vir my gesê as ek net my hare sny, sal sulke goed nie met my gebeur nie,” vertel Heath.

Heath het uit sy huis gestap nadat hy sy honde kos gegee het, toe die polisievoertuig verbykom. “Hulle het verbygery, gestop en teruggekom toe hulle my sien,” verduidelik Heath. Volgens hom het hulle onmiddellik na hom toe gestap en sonder verduideliking hom begin deursoek. “Hulle het deur my sakke gevoel en my sak oopgemaak, vir geen rede nie. Een van hulle het vir my gevra waarom ek so bekommerd lyk, waarop ek vir hom gesê het dat ek net woedend is omdat dit nou al die tweede keer is wat die polisie my terroriseer. Dit is toe dat hulle bietjie teruggetree en gevra het of ek nie ’n verdagte voertuig gesien het nie. Daarna het hulle gery,” vertel Heath. Hy het dit tydens ‘n vergadering van die Gemeenskapspolisiëringsforum genoem waar daar aan hom verseker is dat ondersoek ingestel gaan word.

Die stasie se naam, die provinsie en die afdeling vanwaar die voertuig kom staan alles op die polisie se voertuie. Indien Heath ‘n klag wil lê, moet hy die besonderhede van die betrokke polisiebeamptes se name en die inligting aan ons verskaf en ons sal die saak ondersoek,” sê kapt. Chaka. Take a stand, make your pledge Dustin Wetdewich “Take a stand, make your pledge.” This was the slogan of the Drug Awareness Campaign conducted by fourth year social work students. The campaign took place at Vuselela FET College on 5 September as well as Potchefstroom Technical High School on 9 September. In conjunction with the police (SAPS), correctional services, the Department of Social Development, SANPARK Rehabilitation Centre and Witrand Hospital, learners at these institutions were educated on the dangers of substance abuse. All learners who attended took a pledge not to use drugs and to stop their friends from using drugs. Captain Mvula Chaka, spokesperson for the Potchefstroom SAPS, summed it up quite nicely. “Drugs are not cool, the only cool thing about drugs is the freezer in

the mortuary where you will end up if you use drugs,” Chaka said about drugs. Lawrence Mfumba, an ex-drug user spoke to learners about his own experiences. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison for assault and murder. “To this day I don’t know if I did the things, I have been convicted of. I can’t remember anything, I just remember waking up in prison and being told that I have been charged with murder,” Mfumba explained. All stakeholders involved were positive about the effectiveness of this awareness campaign.

Om mense se hartseer om te sit in vreugde en lewenslus Ds. Koos Mouton. Geref. Kerk Mooirivier.

Lees Markus 5:1-20. Miskien is daar naby jou, in jou familie, iemand soos hierdie besetene van Gerasa? Jesus het op ‘n keer ‘n man ontmoet in die land van die Geraseners wat deur die gemeenskap na buite gestoot is omdat hy “onregeerbaar” was. Hy het tussen die grafte gewoon, was dag en nag aan die skree, en het homself met klippe stukkend gekap. Daar is vandag nog mense wat hulself seermaak, (sny met ‘n lemmetjie) om die diep seer binnekant te probeer stil maak. Sy ouers en die mense van die dorp het alles probeer, maar vergeefs. Pa’s en ma’s, familie doen vandag nog so. Praat mooi, raas, hok die

kinders, slaan hulle, en skop hulle dan uit die huis.... Dan word hulle straatkinders, boemelaars......waarom kon die mense van Gerasa niks regkry met hierdie man nie? Die eerste rede sou seker by hierdie man self gesoek moes word. Hy het eenvoudig teen alle gesag in opstand gekom. “Eer jou vader en jou moeder” hoor ons elke Sondag. Dit beteken gehoorsaamheid, respek teenoor die gesag wat daar is. Na alle waarskynlikheid het hierdie man ‘n geestesversteuring gehad wat die mense van sy dorp nie kon hanteer nie. ‘n Groter probleem lê by die ouers en die gemeenskap. Die probleem was geld. Van geld maak ten koste van kosbare menselewens. Toe Jesus hierdie man genees het,

en die duiwels in die varke laat vaar het, het hulle verlies gely. Die mense van die omgewing was nie eers bly dat hierdie man genees is deur Jesus nie. Hulle sê: “Jesus, loop asseblief. U kos ons geld.” Is dit soos mense vandag is? Dat geld belangriker geword het as die welsyn van mense rondom ons? God vra van ons as gemeenskap, en van ouers, om voor te sê, maar belangriker, om voor te doen. Daar is ‘n ou spreekwoord wat sê: Lank en moeilik is die pad deur voorskrifte kort en maklik deur voorbeelde. Die man van Gerasa het sy probleem na Jesus geneem. En Jesus het sonder ‘n lat of sambok, sonder kettings en boeie, sonder verwyte en skree, hom genees. Nog meer: die man het, op aandrang van Jesus, te-

ruggegaan na sy dorp en omgewing en begin vertel wat Jesus vir hom gedoen het het. Hy het só gepraat en geleef dat mense Jesus in hom kon raaksien. Om Christen te wees is nie net om te praat nie. Dit verseker ook. Om ‘n volgeling van Jesus te wees is ook om deur voorbeeld te doen, ander mense na Jesus te lei. Om donker lig te maak. Om verrotting in ons samelewing te keer. Om mense se drang na selfvernietiging, emosies van hartseer, om te sit in vreugde en lewenslus. En nie die “uitgeworpenes” van die samelewing nog verder weg te stoot nie. Gee liefde aan mense wat op die kantlyn gesit is. Natuurlik is dit nie altyd maklik nie! Maar Jesus vra dit van ons. En laat nooit toe dat geld harder as mense se welsyn praat nie.

Seisoensverandering en selfmoordgedrag Die Herald het prof. Pieter Joubert, plaaslike sielkundige gevra om ‘n artikel te skryf oor die vraag of daar moontlik ‘n verband tussen seisoensveranderinge en selfmoordgedrag is. Hy het die volgende geskryf: ‘n Onlangse studie wat in 20 lande gedoen is, het bevind dat daar wél toename in selfmoord en selfmoordpogings gedurende die lente en vroeë somerseisoene is as gedurende die wintermaande. In die literatuur staan dit bekend as “Seasonal Affective Disorder.” Sommige navorsers verklaar die verskynsel as volg: Gedurende die wintermaande – veral in die noordelike halfrond – is mense geneig om as gevolg van die erge koue en sneeu meer geïsoleerd te leef en gevolglik minder interpersoonlike kontak te hê. (Mens sou dus byna verwag dat selfmoord júís gedurende die winter hoër frekwensie moet hê onder mense wat aan gemoedsteurnisse soos depressie lei.) Dis egter juis wanneer die lente aanbreek dat selfmoordvoorvalle geneig is om toe te neem. Emile Durkheim verduidelik die fenomeen as volg: “Everything begins to awake; activity is resumed, relations spring up, interactions increase. In other words, it is the density of human interactions, and not the environment that caused higher incidence of suicide in spring or summer.” In Suid-Afrika vind dieselfde tendens plaas. Die ironie is dus dat die liedjie “Dis heerlike lente, die winter’s verby” soms juis die eensaamheid en hopeloosheid van depressielyers aktiveer; hulle positiewe verwagting van beterskap en geluk wat die lenteseisoen sou bring, word nie waar nie en lei dus tot dieper teleurstelling en moedeloosheid. Maar wat toon die nuutste navorsing oor selfmoordtendense in Suid-Afrika? Prof. Lourens Schlebusch, wat reeds omvattende navorsing oor die onderwerp gedoen het, meld dat sowat 9.5% van onnatuurlike sterftes onder mense jonger

as 18 jaar voorkom en sowat 11% onder volwassenes. Hoewel daar publieke persepsie bestaan dat selfmoord méér onder vroue as onder mans voorkom, is die teendeel egter waar: Mans pleeg vyf keer meer selfmoord as vroue. Die gemiddelde ouderdom van mense wat selfmoordpogings aanwend is 35jr. Sowat 90% van alle selfmoordpogings wat nie tot dood lei nie, is pogings as gevolg van middeloordosering. Tans vind daar tussen 22-28 selfmoorde per dag in Suid-Afrika plaas; ongeveer een persoon per uur. Ongeveer 18 selfmoordpogings per uur (wat nie tot dood lei nie) vind tans in Suid-Afrika plaas. Die afgelope vyf jaar is daar ‘n 46% toename in selfmoordpogings onder jeugdiges jonger as 18 jaar. Talle oorsake vir dié tragiese gebeure kan gemeld word: Sowat 50% van alle kinders in Suid-Afrika word in enkel-ouer huishoudings groot. Werkloosheid, armoede, egskeidings, werksdruk, huwelikskonflik, gesinsgeweld, die sosiomaatskaplike gevolge van HIV/Vigs, die geweldige eskalerende tempo van verandering en verwagtinge wat baie ouers van hulle kinders het om konstant te presteer en te kompeteer, is maar enkele faktore wat bydraend is. Gemoedsversteurings, angsversteurings, persoonlikheidsversteurings en emosionele uitbranding is nie tekens van “swakheid” of “ongelowigheid” nie. Dis kliniese siektetoestande wat fisiologiese oorsake en psigologiese gevolge het en wat as sulks erken en professioneel behandel moet word. In díe verband is psigiaters en sielkundiges daar om professionele hulp te verleen. Miskien moet ons samelewing mekaar met meer empatie, liefde en begrip behandel en nie te gou wees om regter te speel, te oordeel of mense te kritiseer wat daagliks met siektetoestande soos chroniese depressie of angsversteurings stryd moet voer nie.

In June it was one year ago that a wellknown soy bean breeder started tilling a field of another kind altogether. Tem Odendaal of Soygro fame’s first venture into diversification was to expand his revolutionary biological disease control and plant growth accelerant for soya to all other crops. “It’s good to diversify,” he says, matter-of-factly. His new baby was West Acres shopping centre, home to the main Pick n Pay in Retief Street. “There was not much we could do whilst waiting for municipal approval

so, for the first year, it was pretty much business as usual,” he says. Since February, when approval was granted however, shoppers started seeing all kinds of construction going on. According to Odendaal, the dust will be settling soon, at least at the main entrance. New, more accessible toilets and space for a “kerk-basaar” type food outlet have been added and a covered piazza has been erected for bad weather days. “Hier is definitief goeie geleenthede vir ons” – Prof Herman van Schalkwyk

Goeie en nouer samewerkingsgeleenthede wink vir die Noordwes-Universiteit in Taiwan op die gebied van nanotegnologie, oop- en afstandsleer, biobrandstowwe en energie besparende tegnologieë, nadat die rektor van die Potchefstroomkampus, prof. Herman van Schalkwyk pas ’n formele memorandum van verstandhouding (MVV) met die Nasionale Taipei Universiteit van Tegnologie (NTUT) in Taiwan onderteken het. Prof. Van Schalkwyk is op ’n weeklange besoek aan Taiwan waar hy verskeie universiteite en regeringsdepartemente besoek op uitnodiging van die Taiwannese Ambassadeur in SuidAfrika. Mnr. Theo Bekker, Direkteur Strategiese Projekte in die Kantoor van die Rektor vergesel hom. Die ondertekende ooreenkoms weg die baan vir onder andere moontlike gesamentlike navorsingsprojekte, uitruilprogramme vir akademici sowel as nagraadse studente, medewerking in terme van gepubliseerde artikels, navorsingsondersteuning vir na-doktorale studies, kulturele uitreikprogramme vir studente en die geleentheid om ‘n internasionale standaard te stel vir stu-

dente ontwikkelingsprogramme. Beide universiteite het hulle daartoe verbind om aktief moontlike samewerking op navorsingsgebiede te bevorder en studente aan te moedig om deel te neem aan akademiese uitruilprogramme tussen die twee universiteite. Volgens prof. Van Schalkwyk is hier (Taiwan) goeie geleenthede vir ons. Hierdie ooreenkoms gaan beide universiteite bemagtig en bevoordeel. Akademeci en studente gaan baat by die beskikbaarheid van kennis en gevallestudies en die ooreenkoms kan ook verseker dat ons personeel en studente meer eerstehandse en diepgaande ervaring gaan opdoen as ooit tevore. Volgens die ooreenkoms sal daar veral gefokus word op samewerking in terme van navorsingsontwikkeling, hoër onderwys en opleiding, kwaliteitsversekering, tegnologie-oordrag, oordrag van vaardighede en in die langtermyn disseminasie van akademiese inligting en kundigheid. Later die week word ’n formele memorandum van verstandhouding met die Nasionale Pingtung Universiteit van Wetenskap en Tegnologie ook in Taiwan onderteken.

The countdown begins for Mrs United Nation SA

Cheryl Botha Fransisca Liebenberg is not your average blonde bombshell, strutting her stuff on the catwalks of the country, but then again, Ms United Nation SA is no ordinary beauty pageant either. According to its Facebook page, the biggest nationwide pageant is a competition for real women making a real difference in a real world. “Our heartbeat is volunteering and serving our communities,” it explains. There are no prizes other than a platform from which to promote your vision. “One third of SA’s population is children, many of which can be classified as vulnerable,” says Fransisca on Tuesday, addressing some 20 women who work for Profert, her main sponsor. She is one of 10 finalists who hope to wear the service crown come the coronation on 1 December. Fransisca describes her defining moment as the day she moved from the bustle of Potchefstroom to a farm in a small rural community somewhere between Ventersdorp and Koster. “When you become quiet you suddenly notice things that never challenged you before,” she says. For her, those were faces of hundreds of vulnerable children all around her. Fransisca graduated from NWU as a dietician and has been working as a

group trainer at Virgin Active for 11 years. She has never considered herself to be glamorous, but says being a Mrs UN SA has already opened a number of doors for her. “As a woman, it is probably the most powerful way to be heard,” she says. As a mother of three, she is determined that that her children will appreciate their many blessings. As far as possible, she takes them along to help her

when she visits the 6 farm schools in the area. It is likely that one day, they will wear her shoes, if not her crown. In a nutshell, Fransisca sees her ministry as revealing to each child their own worth and purpose – a totally foreign concept for many of them. “Believing that you are the child of a King and knowing your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit makes it easier to resist teen pregnancy and drug abuse,” she says.

For many, however, the piéce de resistance, was the opportunity that the SAPS Mounted Unit provided for the kids to get up close and personnel with horses. And just when they thought it was all over, the SANDF’s fire fighters packed out all the foam you need to have fun and cool down on a hot, summer’s day. “What an experience for all of us who were involved to experience the thrill over things we take for granted on a daily basis,” says Lizelle Cronje. Thoroughly wet and exhausted, Working on Fire gave each child a snack box as a parting gift. “Thank you to everyone, including the SAPS Air wing, who made this a very special day for the children,” she adds. Oom Stoney is gone but not forgotten

Cheryl Botha Oom Johan (Stoney) Steenkamp may be gone, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of many for years to come. He never allowed his failing health to hold him back in his pursuit of making a difference, and was doing just that till shortly before he was admitted to Mooimed Hospital. He was born in Springs in 1936 and, in the words of his wife, Annatjie, the Lord came to fetch him from Potchefstroom on 11 September. Shortly after moving from Randburg to Potchefstroom to retire, Stoney became involved in the Potchefstroom Mannekoor and continued to remove problem bees, as he had done in the city. “The main difference between the two was that Randburg people paid for his services in notes and Potch, in bees,” says Annatjie. Stoney quickly earned himself the reputation of being someone in the community and unequivocally for the community. He served on the municipal health committee, was an enthusiastic volunteer for the Democratic Alliance and donated 101 units of blood in his lifetime. He also helped needy people, be it through food and other supplies, or finding affordable homes for them. But his greatest contribution was probably being a daddy and mentor to juveniles in prison. His dedication earned him the admiration and respect of many. As his health steadily deteriorated, members of the community came forward with a vehicle and driver to enable him to continue with his correctional ministry in areas like Rustenburg. He is survived by his wife, daughters, Deidré and Anandi, their husbands, Adrian and Leon, and his two grandchildren, Samantha and Vincent. Oom Stoney’s memorial service was held at Duet and officiated by Ds Janneman van Wyk. Funeral 2000 took care of the arrangements.

Nico Gouws weer vir die eerste keer sedert nege jaar weer kan sien. Dit volg nadat hy ’n geslaagde horingvliesoorplanting ondergaan het. “Om vir myself ’n glas water in te gooi is vir my ’n ervaring soos wat ’n vakansie vir ander mense is,” het hy aan die Herald gesê. Hy kon hierna ook net met sy linkeroog sien. Sy blindheid het gevolg na kortisoon-behandeling. Die Lions in Potchefstroom het gehelp om die horingvlies, wat vanaf Kaapstad na Johannesburg gevlieg is, te gaan haal en betyds by die destydse MediCity hospitaal af te lewer. “Student oorleef elektriese skok” is

nog ’n berig op die voorblad van dié uitgawe. Die student, Marthinus Janse van Rensburg, was ’n lid van die Alabama-studentegeselskap toe hy in Sasolburg tydens ’n musiekfees ’n elektriese skok opgedoen het toe hy besig was om ’n kragkoppeling te doen. Hy sou die beligting hanteer. Hy het veelvuldige brandwonde aan sy gesig, nek, bors, arms en hande opgedoen. Ook op die voorblad is ’n foto van mnr. Ton Vosloo, in daardie stadium uitvoerende voorsitter van Nasionale Pers, asook mnr. Koos Buitendag, voorsitter en hoof uitvoerende beampte van die destydse Perskor, saam met prof. Piet Koornhof bied dubbele genot

Piet Koornhof, mede-professor verbonde aan die Musiekskool van die NWU se Potchefstroom-kampus, is onweerlegbaar een van ons land se voorste violiste en vioolpedagoë. Met sy druk program wat gereeld internasionale optredes insluit, was hy en van sy instrumentale kollegas maar taamlik selde deel van Aardklop se klassieke aanbod. Vanjaar is dit anders: ‘n mens kan maar sê dat Koornhof en kie dubbele genot gaan verskaf met ‘n program bestaande uit Russiese trio’s (op 7 Oktober), asook een met kamermusiek van Brahms (8 Oktober). Die Russiese komponiste se name is skaars alombekend, maar Koornhof se beskrywings laat die mond water: “Gayane Chebotarian se toeganklike, laatRomantiese trio is uitbundig, met tipiese Armeense trekke wat herinner aan die meer bekende Aram Khatchaturian. Chebotarian het klavier en komposisie by die Leningrad Koservatorium studeer en was later professor by die Staatskonservatorium in Armenië. Sy het ook ‘n boek geskryf oor die musiek van Khatchaturian. “Gyorgy Sviridov se trio, ‘n redelik vroeë werk, dra duidelik tekens van Shostakovitch, by wie hy studeer het, se

invloed. Dit weerspieël die bedrukte tydsgees in Sowjet-Rusland: swaarmoedigheid, afgewissel met aggressie, ironie en geforseerde humor. Daar is ook ‘n aangrypende dodemars,” is Piet Koornhof se mening oor dié werk van ‘n produktiewe neo-romantiese komponis.. “Anton Arensky se vroeë trio is suiwer romanties in styl, met meesleurende melodieë waarin al drie instrumente lekker deel, en ‘n pittige Scherzo wat byna uit sy nate bars van uitbundigheid. Die werk spreek van behendige komposisietegniek en van uitstekende begrip vir elke instrument se moontlikhede”. Saam met Koornhof tree Human Coetzee (tjello) en Olga Tsihelashvili (klavier) op. Laasgenoemde, wat in Johanesburg woon, is ‘n doktorale student by die Skool vir Musiek. Nadat hulle dié program saam met Olga by een van haar doktorale programme uitgevoer het en die genot wat hulle daarmee ervaar het, is besluit om dit vir ‘n breër publiek aan te bied. Vir die meer konvensionele kamermusiekliefhebbers voer Koornhof, Coetzee, asook die pianis Waldo Weyer ‘n Brahms-program uit, bestaande uit

twee meesterwerke: Die Klaviertrio in C mineur, opus 100 en die Klavierkwartet no. 2 in A majeur, opus 25. Vir laasgenoemde werk sal die altviolis Elmarie van der Vyver by die ander musici aansluit. Uitvoerings soos dié twee mag dalk in die toekoms al hoe skaarser raak, meen Piet Koornhof: “Ek is nie bewus van vooruitgang in die aanvraag na strykersonderrig in Suid-Afrika nie. My indruk is dat daar in sekere areas nog redelik aanvraag vir primêre onderrig is, en daar is pogings deur mense soos die Suzuki Vereniging van Suid-Afri-

Toe ‘n bekende Potchefstromer se vrou onlangs haar been weens komplikasies verloor, was hy in sak en as oor hoe sy verder oor die weg sou kom. Maar die Rotaryklub Potch Mooi, by name Johnny en Eulane Ford, die direkteur van gemeenskapdienste, het tot Sakkie Raath en sy vrou Gail se redding gekom toe dit die nodigste was. “Rotary Internasionaal versprei rolstoele wêreldwyd en wat ons dan ook

versprei vir mense wat dit nodig het in ons omgewing. Ons het die behoefte geidentifiseer en uitgehelp. Ons is bly ons kon ‘n verskil in Gail se lewe maak,” sê Johnny. “Ons weet nie hoe om dankie te sê nie. Ons waardeer dit ongelooflik baie. Dit was vir ons ‘n groot verrassing toe ons met Gail by die huis kom van die hospitaal af en hier staan die rolstoel. “Ek het nie geweet hoe gaan ek haar in die huis kry nie. Dit was wonderlik,” sê Sakkie Raath.

Lions gee simboliese geskenk in Boomplantmaand

Die Potchefstroom museum en biblioteek tesame met Kansa en die Brownies het op Vrydag 12 September ‘n boom ge plant ter viering van nasionale Boomplantmaand. Die Brow nies is daarna met ‘n poppekas vermaak en die suster van Kansa het met hulle gepraat oor kanker. Hier is die Brownies met hul onderwyseres, suster Frances Minné (Kansa), Loset te Absolom (museum) en Lerato April (biblioteek).

Die Lions Klub het twee inheemse bome (Olienhoutbome), vir Ons Hulde Tehuis geskenk ter viering van Nasionale Boomplantmaand. Ian Bekker, woordvoerder van Potch Lions, beskryf die klub se geskenk aan dié tehuis as ‘n simboliese gebaar. “Ek hoop dat dit die begin van ‘n lang en vrugbare vennootskap tussen die Lions Klub en Ons Hulde sal wees,” het hy gesê. Beide organisasies is daartoe verbind om die mees kwesbare lede van die gemeenskap te help. “Daarom is dit net gepas dat ons op hierdie spesiale dag hande vat,” sê Bekker. Potchefstroom Campus2Campus MMA fighters cycle race in Potch preparing for Fightstar

Six fighters from Potchefstroom, Close Combat Solutions, are preparing for Fightstar and this tournament is known as one of the biggest amateur MMA tournaments in the country. Aproximately 40 fighters will battle it out at the Hellenic Hall, Primrose in Johan nesburg. In front are Freddie Snyman and Gerdus Scheepers. In the middle are Francois Meyer, HP van Staden and Hennie Langley. At the back are Kobus Fourie (trainer) and Charl Bouwman (trainer). Roevan de Beer is absent.

The Bestmed Campus2Campus Super Classic has introduced a change of venue and route for the 10th edition of the cycle race, which takes place in the North-West Province on Sunday, 28 September. The event, which is presented annually by North-West University, ends at the Potchefstroom campus after starting at the Vanderbijlpark campus and the Ventersdorp military base. Race director Wynand de Villiers of ASG Events said the new 107km route, which heads in the direction of Parys, would provide a fresh challenge for regular participants. “It’s a rolling out-and-back course and it’s possible for riders to stick in their bunch if they dose their efforts properly on the inclines. “There will be some exciting racing in the last 30km, as there’s a good possibility of a tailwind and a fast finish.” Last year, Bonitas rider Herman Fouché beat out some of the country’s top sprinters to claim his second straight victory at the event. De Villiers said the new venue and route had already sparked considerable interest and the organisers were readying themselves for a field in excess of 1 500. He said many former cycling stars would be riding the event in memory of Springbok cyclist Ertjies Bezuidenhout, who passed away two years ago. The triple Argus champion and

Rapport Tour winner was an NWU alumnus and patron of the event, which was the brainchild of his friend and former university spokesman, Mauritz Meyer. “We will once again observe a moment’s silence for Ertjies at the start,” said De Villiers. With all three campuses working together to present the anniversary edition of the event, he said the national classic would provide “a true campus experience for road riders.” “The students are involved in all aspects – from manning water points to marshalling and handing out medals at the finish.” He said the student Rag committee had adopted the event and would be providing entertainment at the start/finish venue at the Fanie du Toit Sports Grounds. “So we’re interested to see what they’re going to come up with – it can only be entertaining!” De Villiers said there would be various food and beverage stalls as well as a beer garden. The line-up of races includes a 50km short course, which rolls out along the quieter Tygerfontein road, a 3km fun ride for six to eight year olds and 500m toddlers’ race. Pukkies skitter in Noordwesspan

Tydens die Highveld Interprovincial gala wat op 13 September in Germiston plaasgevind het, kon ‘n handjievol swemmers van die NWU Junior Swemklub te midde van baie stywe kompetisie, nege van die 16 individuele medaljes wat deur die provinsie se swemmers huis toe gebring is, om die nek hang. Willie Scheepers, hul afrigter, het drie bronsmedaljes gewen (100m vlinderslag, 100m rugslag en 100m kruipslag). Michelle Pistorius het die 100m rugslag gewen, Samantha Blaauw het silwermedaljes in die 100m vlinder- en 100m kruipslag losgeswem, asook ‘n brons in die 100m rugslag, en Van Zyl Brand het ‘n eerste plek in die 100m rugslag en ‘n derde in die 200m individuele wisselslag behaal. Noordwes het met die aflosse twee tweede plekke asook twee derde plekke behaal. Ook hier het die Pukkies en groter Pukke hul stem dik gemaak. Die volgende streke sê mekaar jaarliks die stryd aan tydens hierdie gala: Northern Tigers (vanjaar se wenners), Limpopo, Central Gauteng, Eastern Gauteng en Noordwes.

Pukke spring weg op wenpad

Bertie Jacobs Eers was ondersteuners se oë só groot, toe word daar op die tande gebyt. Net ’n bietjie later, en daar was kalmte. Die laaste kwart was een van breed glimlag. Of jy nou Sondagmiddag dit op die televisie gekyk het of self by die Kopanelo-baan was, die NWU-Puk se Varsity Netbal-stryd met Maties sou gewis jou emosies laat wipplank ry het. Tog het Dorette Badenhorst se span gemaklik genoeg 48-37 met Stellenbosch se trots klaargespeel. Dit was egter Maties wat aanvanklik die septer in die sirkel geswaai het om 14-12 ná die eerste kwart voor te loop met Pukke wat moes sweet om ’n 8-3 agterstand uit te wis. Badenhorst het na die eerste kwart haar span die leviete voorgelees en mooi laat verstaan dat daar nie een kuise Josef in hul geledere is nie. Sake was die volgende kwart meer gelykop, hoewel Maties steeds die voorsprong 25-24 geniet het, maar teen die einde van die derde kwart was die wedstryd 36-30 in die Noordwesters se beheer. “Ons het geweet Maties is ’n goeie span wat ’n ander soort spel in die sirkel speel, maar hulle het ons steeds onkant gevang,” het Badenhorst verduidelik. As Sondagmiddag ’n voorsmakie was van wat Pukke in vanjaar se Varsity netbal-reeks kan verwag, word die hoofgereg dié naweek opgedis wanneer UJ (Saterdag), UCT (Sondag) en Kovsies (Maandagaand) aangedurf word. Hoewel kuikenmoord dalk UCT se voorland mag wees, is UJ en Kovsies se nekke aansienlik moeiliker om te draai. “UJ en Kovsies speel baie dieselfde en ons weet ons kan ’n taai stryd verwag. Gelukkig lyk ons diepte goed en kan ek vir so vyf nuwe spelers ’n kans teen UCT gee.” Sy is dit wel eens dat Maandagaand se wedstryd teen Kovsies geen wraakstryd vir verlede jaar se eindstryd gaan wees nie. “Ons moet vergeet wat verlede jaar gebeur het en eerder kyk wat ons uit ons vorige wedstryde teen hulle kon geleer het.” Badenhorst het wel netbalondersteuners gewaarsku om hul veiligheidsgordels styf vas te trek. Die volgende paar weke gaan ’n rit van formaat wees. “Hier gaan nog groot netbal in die reeks gespeel word. Die kompetisie is baie sterk en hulle gaan nog ongelooflike goeie netbal sien. Ons moet net ons fokus hou en durf wys.” En ons moet vashou, Sarel.

Luiperds Sewes-span wen Noordelike toernooi

Die Luiperds se Sewes-span het Saterdag aan die Noordelike Sewestoernooi in Kemptonpark deelgeneem en met die louere weggestap toe hulle die Bulle 1710 in die eindstryd verslaan het. Die Luiperds Sewes-span is die nasionale kampioene. Daar vind vier toernooie in die Noorde plaas om ’n wenner te bepaal. Die tweede van die vier toernooie vind eerskomende naweek by Witrivier in Nelspruit plaas, dan volg Loftus op 4 Oktober en op 18 Oktober is die laaste van die Noorde se toernooi op Profert Olën-

park in Potchefstroom. Die nasionale toernooi vind tussen 31 Oktober en 1 November in Saldanha plaas.
