Maphetle’s reluctance to announce executive committee astonishes Victor Boqo

It’s been six weeks since the former Tlokwe executive mayor returned to his seat but he has still not appointed an executive committee. “The executive is responsible for ensuring that the resources at the disposal of the municipality are used in a way that best meets the variety of needs of local citizens.” This is according to COGTA (co-operative governance and traditional affairs) and now Potchefstroom citizens have been deprived of this by the failure of Maphetle Maphetle to appoint his members of a mayoral committee (MMC). During a council meeting on Tuesday at Dan Tloome chambers, members including the ANC were left high and dry when Maphetle did not an-

nounce the MMC’s. This means that some of the legislative oversight committees cannot function. The gallery was full to capacity and patiently waiting for the announcement. The pro-Maphetle group were dressed to kill expecting that he would announce who will serve on his executive. “Appointments of the MMC’s are made with consultation with the organisation. There are still some discussions with the ANC leadership. We don’t have to wait for the council meeting to appoint as I can announce any time. The MMC is an advisory committee to the mayor and in their absence I take decisions,” said Maphetle. “To the opposition this is very shocking to have a mayor who works on his own. Without MMC’s there is no

delivery or control over budget and projects. The ANC cannot decide who to appoint due to their internal squabbles. It’s factions enjoy much more priority than service delivery.

“We hope when Maphetle appoints the MMC’s he will not back pay them from February upon his reinstatement,” said Mr Chris Hattingh, provincial DA leader.

You must resign because... uhm... we say so! Victor Boqo The ANC to date is still at loggerheads with each other regarding the Council’s chief whip position. The divided ANC factions within council in its third attempt to remove the current chief whip, Mr David Kham failed yet again. During a council meeting on 9 April the matter of the removal of the chief whip was postponed until the next council meeting. This time no heated debate transpired amongst the rival ANC members as reported in the sister newspaper, North West Gazette of 19 -25 March. The attack on Kham within the ranks of the ANC comes after he was at the forefront of the removal of the executive mayor, Maphetle Maphetle last year November 21. Thisresulted in the ANC losing the battle of the mayorship to the DA. After the reinstatement of Maphetle on 26 February, the ANC’s NWC (national working committee) endorsed the recommendation of the provincial executive committee (PEC) for Kham to resign from his position. Kham was not present during the council meeting on 9 April. When speaking to the Herald, David Kham said: “I have not resigned and I’m still occupying my position. The NWC nor PEC have neither given me reasons why must I resign.” When asked why Kham must resign, the ANC provincial spokesperson, Mr Kenny Morolong refused to answer instead he said: “The ANC doesn’t engage their deployees through the media. The internal organisational process will be observed in this regard.”

The ANC appointed Mr Dakota Legoete as the party’s chief whip last year December with a hope of making him council’s whip. For this to happen, according to the rules of order, Kham can either resign, die or be removed by a means of council motion. With a divided ANC this is unlikely to happen. Top ANC leadership led by deputy president, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa, Ms Baleka Mbethe, chairperson, Ms Jessie Duarte, deputy secretary general and NWC members flocked to Potchefstroom on 7 April. They held simultaneous public meetings both in Ikageng and Promosa. Amongst their key messages to the public they spoke fearlessly and with one voice that Kham is no longer the chief whip.

Hof vind twee onskuldig Abrie Bronkhorst

Die twee beskuldigdes wat tereggestaan het op die plaasmoord op David Hall is Woensdag in die rondgaande hof in Potchefstroom onskuldig bevind. Paulos Moloi en Amos Nyangiwe het vyf aanklagte waaronder moord en roof met verswarende omstandighede, in die gesig gestaar. Hulle het skuld ontken. Hoewel regter Lötter Wepener in sy uitspraak gesê het dat Moloi gedink het die hof is ’n “sirkus” en dat hy geïmproviseer het soos wat hy getuig het, was daar nie genoeg gronde vir ’n skuldigbevinding nie. Die regter het ook gesê dat Moloi se weergawe ’n spul leuens en fabrikasie was. Die staat het slegs ’n enkel getuie, Bernadette Hall, die oorledene se vrou, gehad om hul saak te bewys. Die enigste getuienis wat die staat gehad het, was die uitwysing en identifikasie van die beskuldigdes deur Bernadette tydens ’n uitkenningsparade. Daar was geen ander getuienis wat hulle met die moord verbind het nie. Bernadette het haarself egter oor die identifikasie en beskrywing van die twee beskuldigdes weerspreek. Dit het verskil van die inligting en beskrywing oor die twee beskuldigdes se saamgestelde sketse. Die regter het na regspraak verwys en verduidelik dat wanneer daar twyfel bestaan, moet dit tot voordeel van die beskuldigdes wees. Beide is daarna vrygespreek. Die regter se beslissing was hartseer vir die familie en Bernadette het in trane uitgebars. “Dis nou vir ons baie erger. Ons het steeds nie ‘closure’ nie. Maar hulle dag sal kom. Daar is ’n rede hiervoor,” het Pieter Hall, broer van die oorledene, gesê. “Ons weet steeds nie wat van al die vingerafdrukke geword het wat op die toneel en in die kar gekry

Tydens Bernadette se kruisondervraging deur advokaat Jacob Malende, beskuldigde een se regsverteenwoordiger, was sy weerbaar en emosioneel. Ondanks haar toestand het die advokaat haar toegesnou deur vir haar te sê: “emotional blackmail won’t get you anywhere”. Regter Wepener het deurgaans fermheid getoon en hom plek-plek duidelik vir Malende vervies. Hy het in ’n stadium aan hom gesê: “I don’t understand your logic.” Die laaste keer wat Bernadette haar man lewend gesien het, was toe die melkstal se deur vir ’n oomblik oop was. Haar man was op sy knieë met twee aanvallers voor hom en twee agter hom. Daarna het die melkstal se deur weer toegegaan en toe het sy net ’n skoot gehoor. Adv. ‘Highway to hell’ on the road to recovery!

Cheryl Botha The ‘road less travelled’ is becoming ‘more travelled’ since Public Works, Roads and Transport has scraped the Venterskroon Road (District Road 85). According to Christo Meyer, who uses the road frequently, the road has improved by 70 percent, although he admits that there is still room for improvement. The Herald reported on the condition of the road on 1 March after receiving numerous complaints about sharp rocks on the road surface, severe erosion and corrugations, as well as damaged storm water pipes that were never repaired. In many places vegetation had grown over the road. Damage to vehicles was running into the hundreds of thousands and tourism was suffering severely. Rob Trautmann, chairperson of Dr Kenneth Kaunda Municipality’s Tourism Association, first took up the issue with the state of the roads in May last year. He compared infrastructure on the North West side with the tarred roads on the Free State portion and noted that there were around 42 kilometres of gravel road that urgently needed at-

tention. While North West had more to offer, tourists were more inclined to visit the other side, he said. By March the North West roads, to and from the Dome, had deteriorated to such an extent that they could only be travelled on with 4x4 vehicles. It has taken ten months for something to be done. Fuel shortages were blamed for the lengthy delays. According to Chris Hattingh, leader of DA North West, the department has been functioning without a head since December 2010. Four different people were tasked to act in the position during this time. Meyer says the vegetation has been removed and the roads are wider. Dongas caused by rainwater have been filled - with earth sourced from the rocky terrain of Donkervliet. There are still loose rocks and stones on the road and the corrugations continue to be a problem. “At least it is trafficable again, but I would think twice before taking a drive in my low-slung fancy sedan though,” he smiled. Road construction experts believe tarring is the only long-term solution for the roads, particularly for an area with World Heritage status.

“Many people seem to think that the valuation involves the valuer simply increasing the previous value by a certain percentage,” says municipal spokesperson, Willie Maphosa. “If we follow this logic then new values should increase uniformly.” In actual fact each property has to be re-valued on its own. The valuer must reflect the property market dynamics at that point in time. “The pressures of supply and demand dictate the fluctuations in property sales as well as their actual prices,” he explains. Maphosa concedes that there is always a possibility of error in any mass administrative process, and this is why the values are published for public scrutiny. Property owners are invited to scrutinize their property details and the related values and, where necessary, lodge objections within the allocated time frame. “The MPRA Act prescribes a 30-day period, but Tlokwe opted for a 52-day period. “Charges for objection forms range from zero to R100, at the discretion of the municipality. In 2009 Tlokwe resolved to charge R10 per application form. Looking at some oddities in the roll Maphosa says the 30% drop in the value of The Eiland Golf Resort was initi-

ally based on the “sky high” value of properties in 2008. Since the bubble burst the value of property has dropped drastically because of reduced demand and oversupply. The logical consequence is reflected in the new valuation roll. In most instances where there has been a big increase, the properties were under-serviced stands that have now been serviced and developed. Instances where the rates have remained the same are small, council-owned pieces of road or sidewalks. What appear to be exorbitant percentage increases can be explained by considering the reasons and drivers behind the rise. In summary Maphosa says the general value of properties in Potchefstroom have increased over the past five years. This is because the market is more active in the Potchefstroom district than other districts in the province. Any increase or decrease in the values was therefore effected to reflect this market change. “Tlokwe City Council will continue to update and rectify values as part of the due process. This, in itself, coupled with the intended 20% decrease in the property rate tariff is bound to soften the rates burden,” he concluded.

Kar bars deur grafsteenwinkel Abrie Bronkhorst ’n 30-jarige man het Saterdagoggend met sy kar deur ’n grafsteenwinkel gebars nadat hy glo van kapers wou ontsnap. Thumeleng Nene van Pretoria was glo van Ikageng op pad huis toe toe die ongeluk plaasgevind het. Lynette Schutte, eienaar van die grafsteenwinkel Pro Granite in Nelson Mandelalaan, sê dat paramedici vir Nene met die lewenskake uit die kar moes bevry. “Al drie sy kar se wiele was reeds af toe hy my winkel getref het,” sê sy. Volgens omstanders het hulle gehoor dat iemand vir Nene wou kaap en dat hy van sy kapers wou ontvlug. Benewens die winkel se glasvensters het vyf grafstene in die slag gebly weens die ongeluk waarvan drie onherstelbaar is. ’n Paar

antieke potte is ook vernietig. Een van die grafstene het tydens die impak deur haar binneste winkelmuur gebars. “Die geboubestuurder het my gekontak en gesê daar is ’n voertuig binne jou winkel.” Sy is April vanjaar 11 jaar in haar winkel en sê die pad raak al hoe gevaarliker. “In Desember verlede jaar het ’n voertuig ’n klip deur my vensters gegooi en omtrent ’n jaar gelede het ’n lorrie se wiel afgebreek en deur een van die buurwinkels gebars.” Schutte het Maandag met die herstelproses van haar winkel begin. “Bafana Bafana Sekuriteit het sedert die ongeluk waggehou by die winkel. Mense in die dorp het ook gratis hulp kom aanbied.” Inwoners van nabygeleë woonstelle het die Saterdagoggend na die slag glo gesien hoe twee persone van die toneel af weghardloop kort na die ongeluk. Maar Nene het vir nood-

dienswerkers gesê dat hy alleen in die kar was. Gerugte dat daar ’n onbekende bedrag geld uit die kar weg is kon ook nie bevestig word nie. Diana King, woordvoerder van Mediclinic Potchefstroom het bevestig dat Nene in die hospitaal opgeneem is en gesê dat sy toestand tans stabiel is. Hy wou egter nie kommentaar lewer nie. Sy vrou Claudina, wat in haar laaste swangerskapweek is, sê dit was ’n groot skok vir haar. Sy het gesê dat Nene ’n klein besigheid het en vir homself werk. Volgens kapt. Mvula Chaka, polisiewoordvoerder, kan die bestuurder nie onthou wat gebeur het nie.

Cheryl Botha Nine horses have died from African horse sickness and another one has contracted the disease. This was the update from the state veterinarian on Monday. Dr Andries Nel says the deaths were isolated to the agricultural land in Mooibank. A vet was able to pull the sick horse in Oudedorp through. It is the only case that has been reported in this area. African horse sickness is carried by midgets and is not uncommon at this time of the year. There has been a ban on the movement of horses to the Western Cape which is free of the disease. This will remain in place until the first frost, he says.

DA member suspended after trouble with in-laws Victor Boqo The Democratic Alliance has suspended one of its members after he was arrested for allegedly assaulting his brother-in-law on 3 March. “We suspended Mr Nimrod Fransman from DA activities as from March pending the outcome of the court case. He still represents the party as a proportional councillor in Council,” said Mr Chris Hattingh, DA leader in North West. Fransman appeared before Potchefstroom magistrate court on 5

April facing assault charges with the intention to do grievous bodily harm. The matter will resume again on 10 April. It is alleged that Fransman and three friends attacked and stabbed his brother- in- law, Mr Denise Foen. Foen went to see his ex-wife, the sister of Fransman at their home in Promosa at 19:30 as reported in the Herald of 8 March. Bestaan die wet nog? ’n Vrind van Ore het laat weet Ore moet ’n reuse-groot vraagteken in die koerant laat sit. Onder die vraagteken moet daar net een vraag aan Potch se spietkops wees: Bestaan die wet oor selfone en bestuur nog? Ore moet hom dit toegee. Ore wonder ook partykeer, want al wat leef en beef praat met hul selfone terwyl hulle bestuur. Nou die dag het ’n man met ’n bakkie oor ’n rooi lig gery terwyl hy met een hand die selfoon vasgehou en die ander hand gebruik het om iets te

nie. Dis wat Ore nie verstaan nie. Potch se spietkops keer mense voor en beboet hulle oor hulle nie veiligheidsgordels dra nie, maar intussen jaag mense rond oor rooi ligte en hou nie stil by vierrigtingstoppe nie.

keer te nies terwyl jy vir die sout en asyn blik wag nie. As ek uiteindelik daar wegstap, drie speserye later, en op my sitplek gaan sit, wil ek net ontspan en my duur kiepiemielies en koeldrank stadig geniet. Dan gebeur dit: Hier stap ’n groep meisies in. En die tou hou nie op nie. Hulle begin hulle self op al wat ’n sitplek is neerplak behalwe op die sitpleknommer wat hul kaartjies aandui. Dan word daar eers oor banke geklim om foto’s te neem. Dit klink later soos ’n hokkiewedstryd. Reëls geld mos nou nie meer nie. Later hoor jy hulle is van ’n hoërskool in Klerksdorp. En daar lyk my word dinge anders gedoen. Nou wil ek

Mens sou kon sê dat die Puk aan die begin van die reeks teen Tukkies gewen het en dat hulle amper die Maties gewen het, maar as ons eerlik wil wees, was die Puk bloot net vrek gelukkig. Hulle het nooit dié jaar na ’n span gelyk wat die eindstryd gaan haal of eintlik daar hoort nie. Die Puk het met die begin van die Varsitybeker-reeks goed weggespring maar met die jare algaande verswak soos wat die ander universiteite al meer in die reeks ingeploeg het. stryd in die Varsitybeker vaarwel roep en gaan dit die beeld van die Puk meer skade doen as iets anders. En as ek reg onthou was een van die redes vir die Puk-rugbyinstituut juis om studente (en veral mans) na die Puk te lok. André Markgraaff was een van die argitekte. Moet Markgraaff nie maar weer nadergehark word nie? Hy ken rugby en hy kan somme maak. As die Puk dan besluit rugby gaan dit nie vir hulle doen nie, kies iets anders en gaan voluit. Moet asseblief net nie gemiddeld in alles wees nie.

Puk-rugby: die skrif is aan die muur

Die opstanding uit die dood: Hulle wou Jesus in hoed dryf Ds. Koos Mouton In die verhaal van die Sadduseërs wat Jesus toets met ’n vraag oor die opstanding uit die dood is dit duidelik dat hulle die situasie so oordryf dat hulle Jesus in ’n hoek kon dryf. Volgens die “wet van gemiddeldes” is dit haas onmoontlik dat sewe broers te sterwe sou kom en geen nageslag vir die oudste broer by sy weduwee kon verwek nie. So het die Fariseërs ook probeer om Jesus in ’n lokval te lei met betrekking tot die vraag of belasting betaal moet word of nie. (Matt. 22:15-22) Die Sadduseërs het die opstanding uit die dood ontken, soos baie mense vandag dit doen. ’n Man sterf kinderloos. Dit was ’n

skande destyds om sonder ’n nageslag te wees, want dit is beskou as dat God jou verwerp. Ten laaste sterf die vrou ook. Nou die vraag: “In die opstanding dan, wie se vrou sal sy wees? Al sewe was met haar getroud.” Die vraag het die Skrif as basis. In Deut. 25:5,6 word die opdrag gegee dat die broer van die een wat gesterf het met die kinderlose weduwee moet trou en namens sy oorlede broer kinders by haar verwek. Jesus se antwoord aan die Sadduseërs? “Julle dwaal omdat julle nie die Skrif ken nie”. Hulle ken ook nie die krag van God nie. Alle mense ken die krag van die dood. Die dood sny alle aardse bande deur. En niemand kon nog ooit ’n mens uit die dood opwek

nie. Nie gister nie, nie vandag nie. So redeneer die Sadduseërs - en die ongelowiges van ons dag. Dus, logies: Daar is geen opstanding nie. Geen lewe na die dood nie. Van die krag van God wat mag het om die gelowige na Hom te neem in die ewige lewe, weet diegene wat die opstanding ontken, niks. Daarby redeneer hulle verder, half spottend kan mens sê, dat as daar ’n opstanding uit die dood is, dit ongeveer so iets moet wees soos die huidige lewe duskant die graf. Jesus lig die gordyn so bietjie met betrekking tot die lewe na die dood. Hy sê ons sal soos die engele wees. Nie vas aan die aarde met al sy kwellinge van elke dag nie. Nie meer met ’n brose liggaam, wat kan siek word, en

sterf nie. En... in die lewe na die dood word daar nie meer getrou en in die huwelik uitgegee nie. Dit beteken dat verhoudinge wat nou hier geld, soos man en vrou, ouers en kinders, nie meer in die hiernamaals sal geld nie. Wat sê dit vir ons in die tyd tussen opstanding en hemelvaart? Dat ek ’n lewe by die Here het as my aardse bestaan hier tot ’n einde kom. Dat ek daarna kan uitsien om vir altyd by Jesus te wees. En wat beteken dit nie? Nie in ’n hoekie gaan sit en die dood afwag nie. Hierdie lewe, met al sy pyn en ellende, is nog steeds die lewe wat God my gee om voor Hom te lewe. Want: God is nie ’n God van die dooies nie, maar van die lewendes. Aanbid die opgestane Heer!

Cheryl Botha On Tuesday 9 April Maurice (Kosie) van Deventer was given the gift of hearing. The 4 -year-old has been trapped in a world of silence since birth. Witrand Hospital describes his hearing loss as severe to profound in both ears. Because he cannot hear, he cannot speak so most people refer to him as being deaf and dumb. Speech therapists and audiologists prefer to call him speech and hearing impaired. Whatever the terminology, Maurice has taken the exciting step over the threshold of real communication. Up until now he has only been able to communicate through gestures, basic lip reading, unrecognisable sounds and frustration tantrums. His mother, Jane, described the moment that the two high powered hearing aids were fitted as “a miracle”. She says he was bewildered for a moment and then his little face lit up with joy. Local audiologist, Elmie Wolmarans, came to Maurice’s rescue when she ofMaurice (Kosie) van Deventer has every reason to smile. fered free hearing tests for International Hearing Day on 3 March. Maurice’s mom, Jane, grabbed the opportunity for a better life for her only child. With no transport of their own they took on the long road from near Berts Bricks on the Mooibank Road on foot. On 27 March they went to Witrand Hospital for diagnostic tests and the mouldings for two new hearing aids. Wolmarans cautions, there is still a long road ahead. “There is a lot of catching up to do because he has already lost four years of auditory experience,” she says. “But he is a smart boy and he’s very engaging. I believe he is going to do very well with speech therapy,” she says. While Witrand has indicated that he may receive therapy from the outpatient speech therapy department, it is easier said than done without transport. It is likely that Maurice will get therapy at Potchefstroom Hospital. The good news is that the state is paying for everything because Maurice is not yet six. In the next few years he will learn to put meaning to sound. They will be working closely with Jane to ensure that therapy is carried over in his home environment.

Woman (29) narrowly escapes death Victor Boqo What was supposed to be a good ending to a wonderful night turned into a nightmare for a woman of Ikageng. Ms Boitumelo Rapiya (29), a mother of two in Greenfield, Extension 7, escaped death and is lucky to be alive after being shot in the face. This happened in Molwantwa Street on April 7 at 00:30 after Rapiya returned from a friend’s party. “I saw a group of four young men. I was afraid and decided to go to a neighbour’s house. After a while I wanted to go home so I looked outside the door to see if the young men were still there. “I only saw one man. He fired a shot and it hit me in the face. The gunman then came inside the house and stole my neighbour’s cellphone

after holding us hostage,” says Rapiya. She was taken to Potchefstroom Mediclinic. “We were able to take out the bullet. It did not reach her jawbone. It went underneath her skin,” says Ms Diane King, Potchefstroom Mediclinic spokesperson. “I have never been so traumatised in my life. What hurt me most is that I don’t even know the man who shot me. I have never seen him before.” She describes the gunman as light in complexion, wearing a blue cap with a black dice T-shirt and a blue overall. She says he is in his midtwenties. “I can’t sleep and I’m even afraid to go outside especially at night.” Rapiya opened a case with the police. At the time of going to print no comment about the case was received from the police.

Ek is toe nie die enigste een wat skade aan my voertuig opgedoen het op die N12 nie. 20 Jaar gelede in die Herald

Winkels wen bierstryd in Potchefstroom Die hoofberig in die uitgawe van 9 April, 20 jaar gelede, lees dat winkels in die Mooibank- Harpington en Haaskraal-omgewing hul sorghumbierlisensies teruggekry het nadat dit vroeër deur die destydse Transvaalse Provinsiale Administrasie (TPA) afgevat is. ’n Bekende Potchefstroomse prokureur, wyle mnr. James Moodie, het namens die winkeleienaars ’n dringende aansoek in die hooggeregshof gebring. Dit het gevolg nadat die winkeleienaars nie ’n behoorlike rede vir die terugtrekking van hul lisensies by die TPA kon kry nie. Die voorbladfoto van die betrokke week was ook, soos in verlede week se Herald, oor die kosmosse wat hierdie tyd van die jaar pragtig in blom is. ’n Aardskudding, wat deur kenners

glo as “lig” beskryf word, maar darem op die Richerskaal 4,1 gewys het, kon ook in Potchefstroom, Parys en dele van die Rand gevoel word. Die middelpunt daarvan was in Carletonville. In daardie stadium is beweer dat tot vier sulke skuddings per jaar in die area geregistreer word. ’n Opvolgberig oor die Herald se Aprilgek-berig van die vorige week, dat ’n kabelspoor van die dam tot by die Prozesky voëlreservaat opgerig gaan word, vertel hoe ’n oom sy koerant stukkend geskeur en sy prokureur gebel het oor skone boosaardigheid. Uit die verdere reaksie oor die berig het dit darem gewys dat die meerderheid Potchefstromers ’n sin vir humor het. Een inwoner het selfs gedink dit is ’n uitstekende idee!

Brian Mitchell, ’n wêreldbokskampioen op sy dae, het ook ’n draai in Potchefstroom kom maak en boonop ’n bos blomme van ’n mooi vrou gekry! Ai, dis ook net die beroemde manne wat blomme kry in plaas van gee! Op rolbalgebied is daar ’n foto op bladsy 3 van Hettie de Beer, wat nog gereeld in die Herald briewe skryf, en haar rolbalmaat, Theo Botha, nadat hulle die gemengde pare in die Wesvaal-kampioenskappe gewen het. Dit wil half lyk of die eerste week in April nie ’n goeie tyd vir die Pukke of die Maties is nie. Maties het pas Maandagaand ’n groot drag slae van Tukkies gekry, maar 20 jaar gelede was dit die Pukke wat ’n 45-17 pakslae van Vaal Reefs in die Blaine-beker gekry het.

Baie geluk aan Oppies Opperman wat verlede week se Kletsborrel gewen het. Hy wen ’n koopbewys van R100 om iets by die Steakhouse op die Bult te gaan geniet. Dit is dan ook die laaste Kletsborrel wat ons plaas. Van volgende week af kan lesers hul eie skater-kiekies instuur en daarmee wen.

’n Bekende Potchefstromer, Gerard Moerdyk, behaal sy Springbokkleure in stap en het in Mexiko gaan deelneem. Die Herald het ook oor die dood van Chris Hani berig toe 12 000 optoggangers ’n memorandum aan die polisie gaan gee het. Meer daaroor volgende week.

Sy was gaande oor haar sewe kleinkinders. Sy was deeglik in haar werk by kultuursake en ook as voorsitter van die Laslapgilde van die streek. Ons het ’n groot maat verloor. Ons mis jou verskriklik. Peet, Ma Erna, Erna en Julio, Lida en Paul, Willemien en Francois, Suretha en Sarel, en kleinkinders.

Kunsuitstalling om Wêreldkunstedag te vier In Potchefstroom word Wêreldkunstedag op Maandag, 15 Februarie, by die Potchefstroomse Hoofmuseum gevier

Dié uitstalling bestaan uit twee- en driedimensionele kunswerke van verskillende kunstenaars wat saamgevoeg is sodat dit tematies en stilisties “in gesprek” met mekaar tree. Maar waarom is juis dié dag so spesiaal? Daar is verskeie spesiale dae wat wêreldwyd gevier word om die goeie waardes van ’n saBeeldhouwerk deur Elna Venter.

Met sy kalm en gedetermineerde karakter het hy verskeie dissiplines bymekaargebring en is sy geboortedatum beslis die mees gepaste dag om Wêreldkunstedag te vier. “Tweegesprek” word om 19:00 deur prof. What makes one stand out from a crowd? According to Edwin Gagiono it is preparation. It is said that luck equals opportunity plus preparation. Edwin’s luck is changing and all his hard work has finally paid off. He has been invited to form part of a small select group of talented young South Africans that will yet again represent the country on an international stage and will perform during the annual ARTS convention in Orlando, Florida in June this year. ARTS is the Applause Rising Talent Showcase, under the leadership of international talent scout and casting director, Kim Napier Myers. In October 2012 Myers visited South Africa to select her talent during the International Showcase at Montecasino in Sandton, which was organised by Just You Model and Artist Management. Edwin received his call back the morning of the 28th of October 2012 after applying himself to weeks of preparation and intensive training. He is flying out to the States on the 14th of June 2013. Edwin Gagiano is a talented 23-yearold actor from Johannesburg. He grew up in Kimberley in the Northern Cape, but he admits that Potchefstroom is where his heart lies. “I lived in Potchefstroom and worked on my album and my acting career after it had just started to really kick off. I made some great

friends here and some of my best friends still live here, so I visit them as often as I can.” Edwin brags about Potchefstroom and says that anyone who lives or studies here, would confirm that this is a town to be proud of. Edwin started to watch movies at a very young age. His interest in acting began when he realised that he really understood what the actors were saying in the films he watched and that all the different storylines transported him to another world. “At some stage my mother had to get me away from the tellie, so I put one in my room without them knowing at first.” After he watched the movies he would re-enact his favourite roles in his backyard. He started taking drama classes, performed at art festivals and when he was 16 years old, he got the part of a slightly nerdy but manageable kid called Alf Bueller, in the production ‘Back to the 80’s’. “That’s when the acting bug bit me and my life just turned into a movie.” Edwin was very fortunate to work on an Australian film called ‘One’ earlier this year and he will be working on numerous projects before he goes to New York City in June, including a Pretoria based short film, in which he plays an officer. This is only the beginning and in 10 years time Edwin sees himself at the Oscars with Steven Spielberg. He also sees himself working in the South African acting and entertainment community to introduce performers to safe, international platforms. “I am just a boy in a man’s body, with a dream to be able to change the way people look at their dreams and passions in life. Mannekoor hou verjaardag-feeskonsert Vir meer inligting asook om die feesOp Potchefstromers wat van koormu- heid lewer wat om 15:00 in die Sansiek hou, wag daar op 20 April ’n fees lam-ouditorium op die Pukkampus konsert se CD of DVD of enige van die ander CD’s en DVD’s te bekom, kan van uitvoerings wanneer die Potchef- plaasvind. stroomse Mannekoor ’n feeskonsert ter viering van hul 30ste bestaansjaar hou. Jannie Moolman is die gaskunstenaar. Vir die afgelope 30 jaar is manne wat kán sing en veral wíl sing, ’n Christen is en wat getuienis deur sang wil lewer, lede van hierdie koor. Die koor staan onder leiding van Babs Brouwer en het sy wortels by Hoër Volkskool geskiet. Deur die jare het dit ontwikkel tot bekende en geliefde kunstenaars met ’n eie, unieke styl wat al opgetree het by groot mannekoorfeeste, die KKNK en Aardklop. Gehore en kerkgemeenskappe van Worcester in die suide tot Duiwelskloof in die noorde is al met dié koor se sang bekoor. Die koor bestaan tans uit 35 lede en hoewel lede hoofsaaklik Potchefstromers is, is daar ook lede van Klerksdorp en selfs Parys. Oefentye is Maandagaande van 19:00 tot 21:15 in die saal van Huis Eikelaan. Babs is die stigter van die koor en na 30 jaar is daar nog drie lede, Emile Hallby, Klaas Wyma en Sarel Eloff, wat steeds deel van die koor is. Die koor het reeds vier CD’s en twee DVD’s uitgereik. Die program van die feeskonsert word ook opgeneem en sal in CD of DVD-vorm beskikbaar wees. Potchefstroom Business Chamber and ATKV motivate schools to dream big The Education Action Committee of the Potchefstroom Business Chamber recently partnered up with the ATKV to present a motivational workshop for designated schools in Potchefstroom. Various stakeholders from ten schools took part in the event that was held at Potchefstroom Academy. The workshop, entitled ‘Education Mind-shift’, was described as hugely successful. Presenters, Seymour Bothman from the ATKV and Graeme de Bruyn from Allan Gray Orbis discussed the importance of every single roleplayer in the success of a school. Learners, principals, teachers, governing body members, community members, busi-

ness stakeholders as well as representatives of the Department of Education listened attentively to how important their respective contributions are. They also learned the importance of having a definite vision. The learners as well as the adult representatives were encouraged to dream big and to be the positive change they would like to see in their schools and communities. Each of the representatives admitted that they had been challenged and that the workshop had had a big impact on them. There was a general optimism that workshops of this calibre would undoubtedly bring about positive change, not only in schools, but in the broader community.

Chané Scheepers Vyf Potchefstromers gaan die naweek al hul kragte inspan om die Ysterman- kompetisie in Port Elizabeth in die Oos-Kaap aan te pak. Willie Landman, Cliff Wallace, Zoli de Kock, P.C Meyer en Johnny Jansen van Vuuren gaan 3.8 kilometer swem, 180 kilometer fietsry en 42 kilometer hardloop. Hul het slegs 17 ure om die afstand te voltooi. 1 800 Atlete wat 50 lande verteenwoordig gaan aan hierdie strawwe kompetisie deelneem.

Senior dames rol silwermedalje los Chané Scheepers Die Noordwes-senior-dames-rolbalspan het onlangs die hele rolbalgemeenskap verras deur die silwermedalje by die Inter-distrik-kampioenskappe te verower. Twintig rolbaldistrikte wat onder meer Suid-Kaap, Gauteng, Gau-

teng-Noord, KwaZulu-Natal, Boland, Grens, WP, OP, Vrystaat, Suid-Vrystaat, Noordwes en Noord-Kaap insluit, het vanaf 14 tot 16 Maart in Kaapstad bymekaargekom om teen mekaar te speel. Ongelukkig het die Noordwes-damespan in die eindstryd teen die Westelike Provinsie verloor.

Zoli de Kock is een van die vyf Potchefstromers wat die naweek aan die Ysterman-kompetisie in Port Elizabeth gaan deelneem.

Rotary Golf day helps Dienssentrum Chané Scheepers The Annual Rotary Potchefstroom Golf Day was held on 21 March and once again proved to be very successful. The income from last year went towards the purchase of a Toyota bus for the Dienssentrum and this year’s income will pay for the wheelchair lift that was installed on the bus. The day started when 152 golfers teed off in 38 teams. Charles Kuhn walked away with the top IPS prize, while the ladies’ prize was won by Siska Scholtz. With the generous support of many

sponsors, almost every golfer went home with a prize or memento of the day. At the prize giving ceremony, the bus was officially accepted by Wendri Eloff of the Dienssentrum with some of the major sponsors such as AngloGold Ashanti and Toyota in attendance. A magnanimous gesture by Kyalami Toyota to service the bus was also accepted. “Rotary wishes to thank all the sponsors for their continued support with the promise that 100% of the income goes towards helping the community,” says club president Ray van Rensburg.

Al wat Villager-ondersteuner is, blaas ’n sug van verligting want dié een lyk reeds in die sak te wees, en dit boonop teen die verdedigende kampioen uit Bloemfontein. Buitesenter Adriaan Oosthuizen het gedruk, so ook agtsteman Daniël Bensusan en Juan Booyens was in die kol met albei doelskoppe. Die Griffons het 14 jaar laas in Potchefstroom geseëvier toe hulle in 1999 die ou Noordwes 26-24 in die Vodacombeker verslaan het. Vrydagaand op Profert Olënpark probeer hulle weer so maak wanneer hulle die Luiperds XV aandurf. Die Luiperds het in 2001 laas teen die Pers Mensvreters verloor toe hulle 39-18 in Welkom vasgeval het, maar dieselfde jaar in Potchefstroom was die telling 24-24. Die afrigters Jorrie Muller en Chaka Willemse wou nie aan die Luiperdspan verander wat die naweek 33-26 met die Blou Bulle in Pretoria afgereken het nie, maar moes noodgedwonge ’n paar veranderinge maak. BG Uys is terug nadat hy sy suster se troue bygewoon en verloof geraak het. Hy neem weer sy plek in die voorry in, in die plek van Martin Dreyer. André Pretorius het herstel van sy nekbesering en is reg om die Griffons aan te durf. Sy skakelmaat is Tiaan Dorfling, wie vir Jacques Olivier vervang. Jaco Grobler is ook weer reg maar aan die ander kant het Jacques Olivier meer as sy deel in die oorwinning teen die Bulle gedoen. Die afrigters het nog nie hul plaasvervangerbank gefinaliseer nie.
