Local designer wows at Durban July Cheryl Botha Monique Botha knows how it feels to have stage fright. When her creations were declared the winners in the Kiss Most striking couple at the Durban July on Saturday, she suddenly found herself in front of hundreds of camera lenses. “This is one of the highlights on the calendar of any emerging designer. I was hoping to win, but I honestly didn’t expect it,” she says. The achievement unleashed a mediafrenzy and the phone has not stopped ringing since then. “The prizes amounted to around R30 000 but it is more about exposure than anything else. The road was cordoned off to make space for the jumping castles. The sound of music and laughter filled the air and children were lining up excitedly to get their faces painted. For the first time in many, many years, the carnival had come to Promosa. Angela Freeks, director of Thuso ya Batho, and her team of volunteers had spent months planning the event. They gathered a number of sponsors and provided cakes and food galore. According to her, 1 540 children and 820 adults pitched up for the occasion. Anyone planning an event of this size cannot hope to do it without the help and support of the community and organisations. Angela expressed her gratitude towards ER 24 and the SAPS for being on stand-by in case of trouble. She also thanked all the women in the commu-

Angela was deeply moved by the poverty and suffering in her community, and says she did it in obedience to God. On average she feeds around 600 hungry tummies per day, a remarkable feat for someone who lives off a disability pension. She and her team of 12 volunteers start early, providing pap for children before school. From 11:00 to 16:00 people come from all over to get a hot meal. Six days a week. In this kitchen there are no fancy appliances or ovens. Meals are cooked over smoky log fires outside – industrial pots full of food that smells unmistakably appetising. In rainy weather the ground turns into a muddy mess and rain water carves gullies into the floors inside the house, but the meals are still served. “We cannot disappoint these people. She chose her friends, Ben and Cornell du Preez from Rustenburg, to showcase her winning entry. “It was hectic – we only managed three fittings in all. The adrenalin was pumping and the nerves were shot, especially during the first judging. The outfits had to be striking enough to make an impact among crowds of other contestants.” And they did., One of the prizes was two air tickets from Mango. Monique plans to use them for the J&B Met next year!

What goes on when you aren’t there? Cheryl Botha “It had a PVC piping handle and a strap made of plaited cotton.” That is how a young mommy of two describes the strap that a child minder allegedly used on some of the children from a day care centre in the park recently. “I don’t want to bad-mouth the place, but I feel it’s my duty to let parents know that this kind of thing does happen.” She urges mommies to pop in at random times to see what happens at the facilities where they leave their children every day.” She had taken her little boy (4) to the park in Chris Hani Street when she
observed the teacher “shouting and screaming” at the children, aged between 2-and-a-half and 5. “It looked like she was smacking them randomly because, in my opinion they weren’t being naughty at all they were just playing. They didn’t cry, but I saw one of them walk away holding his bum.” This mom grew up in a home where her own mother worked in child care for thirty years. Over the years she, too, gained experience. “You aren’t even supposed to smack them, even though it is sometimes necessary. But I think a strap is going overboard. It’s very worrying.” The owner of the day care centre involved says she uses it as a way of keeping the children in line.
“Social workers, people from Child Protection and the clinic come here regularly. If it is true that I use it on them then they would surely have picked up something or noticed marks on them,” she says indignantly. It is a fact that in SA at the moment, child minders are not obliged to register and are not subject to inspection. It is therefore up to parents to protect their children’s rights.

It may not be that easy to find time to pop in unexpectedly. The fact is, parents need to check up on the kind of care their child is receiving when they are not around. According to the Department of Social Development, the nature and quality of the care and education a child receives during these early years, is of crucial importance for the later development.
ANC T-shirts on fire Victor Boqo Angry ANC members who sympathises with the fourteen axed councillors took to the streets and burned ANC T-shirts next to the municipal building on July 4. The crowd burned T-shirts in broad daylight and were holding placards that read “Supra Mahumapelo a catalyst power.” “Take your corrupt ANC, we will remain with our votes.” “You can expel us from the ANC but you can’t expel us from communities.” The ANC’s decision to expel the councillors comes after they participated in the removal of Tlokwe executive mayor, Maphetle Maphetle for the second time on July 2. Maphetle is alleged to be facing corruption charges. The axed councillors first submitted a motion of no confidence against its own mayor last year November. The ANC’s provincial disciplinary committee charged all fourteen members with misconduct and they were expelled from the party for a period of five years. The suspended ANC members are: Jim Bothoza (ward 18); Lucky Tsagae; Messo Dassie; Johannes Johnson (ward 13); Mmasapei Madiehe (ward 12); Vuyiswa Bothoza; Evelyn Moloi (ward 1); Stone Mahlabe (ward 26); Pasela Mhlophe (ward 20); James Makhaza (ward 4); Lorraine Phakedi (ward 6); Kedibone Mampe; Mildred Qokela and Margaret Selowane (ward 11). The ANC is now gearing up for bi-elections next month. Nine wards are being contested. Five of the dismissed are proportional councillors. 150-jarige sneuwel by Pretorius Museum
Lennie Gouws ’n Eikeboom by die President Pretorius-museum, wat een van die oudste eikebome in die stad is, het die nag van Donderdag 4 Julie omgeval. Dié eikeboom, wat reg langs die smidswinkel by die Presidensie staan, het ’n nabygeleë kanferboom te pletter geval, maar die smidswinkel met sentimeters gemis. Die eikeboom is op 17 September 1863 geplant. So het ’n seun van ’n bywoner van president M.W. Pretorius, Danie van Graan, later in sy herinneringe geskryf. Danie sê dat dit die eerste eikebome is wat in Potchefstroom geplant is. Hy skryf dat hy mev. Aletta Pretorius, vrou van die president, gehelp het om enkele “eikeboompies” agter die huis te plant. Dit is gepubliseer in die boek “Vastrappers” wat in 1919 deur A.J. van der Walt saamgestel is. Tans staan die eikebome vóór die huis, maar Johan Wolfaardt, kurator van die museum, sê dat die wapad, wat die groot pad tussen Potchefstroom en Johannesburg was, aanvanklik aan die westekant van die presidentswoning was. Dit is eers later, met die uitleg van die dorp, na die oostekant geskuif. Dit is algemeen bekend dat die president se vrugteboorde was waar die Laerskool Mooirivier vandag is en dit was gebruik om die vrugteboorde agter die huis te plant, dus het die bome ook toe
agter die huis gestaan. Die eikeboom het enkele maande gelede ’n kraak ontwikkel en na raadpleging van ’n kundige oor eikebome aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch is daar kabels aangebring om die stam te stut, maar dit was nie suksesvol nie. Wat niemand toe geweet het nie, was dat ’n termietnes die boomstam van binne uitgehol het en die reuse-boom is regop gehou deur ’n klein gesonde deeltjie van die stam wat nie meer as

Die tweede grootste van die twee, wat effens kleiner is en net agter hierdie een staan, het Donderdagnag omgeval. Met die val het die boom die smidswinkel, links van die boom op die foto, met sentimeters gemis.

Universiteit van Amsterdam verwerf. Hy het onder die skuilnaam Totius gedig. Temas soos die mens en die natuur staan sentraal in sy gedigte. Totius het ook aangrypende gedigte oor die skielike dood van twee van sy kinders geskryf. Hy het in 1953 op 76-jarige ouderdom gesterf. Oorspronklike meubelstukke en artefakte uit die tyd toe Totius en sy familie in die huis gewoon het, staan steeds in die museum wat besigtig kan word. Die Totiushuismuseum word ook vir geleenthede soos boekbekendstellings gebruik. Tydens die Clover Aardklop Kunstefees verlede jaar was daar ook ‘n uitstalling van Pierneefwerke uit Totius se persoonlike versameling. Totius en Pierneef was nie net tydgenote nie, maar ook goeie vriende. Belangstellendes kan Venessa skakel op 072 331 7029.

Ons sal nog roosbome moet plant, maar wil moeite doen om net variëteite in te sit wat in Totius se tyd beskikbaar was sodat die tuin ook periode korrek kan wees.” Met die Vriendevereniging word ook beoog om mense met ‘n liefde vir geskiedenis en ‘n belangstelling in Totius se lewe en werk, te motiveer om mede-verantwoordelikheid te aanvaar vir die erfenis wat mense soos Totius gelaat het. “Ons wil hê die publiek moet meer betrokke raak,” het Van der Venessa van der Westhuizen, vakkundige by die TotiusWesthuizen gesê. huismuseum in Potchefstroom, in die roostuin by die museTotius het teologie um. Eenie Meenie Miney ‘Mo’ - Who will have to go? Victor Boqo Maphetle Maphetle or Prof. Annette Combrink? This is the question that the community wants an answer to. The drama has not yet ended and the community is still confused as to who is the legitimate Tlokwe executive mayor. This comes after Maphetle was once more removed from power by the DA on July 2. The matter is likely to end up in High Court, as to date Maphetle Maphetle still declares that he is the legitimate mayor while Prof. Annette Combrink
says she is in the same position too. On Monday Maphetle called the DA members for a meeting and still stood by his statement that he is the mayor. He ignored the DA’s legal notice to vacate the office together with his members of the mayoral committee (MMC’s). “Maphetle Maphetle is not the executive mayor but he is just seeking political survival. As the DA we have a responsibility to run the City as a legitimate elected mayor,” said Prof. Annette Combrink. “At this stage we are considering legal action to interdict Maphetle and his
MMC’s,” concluded Combrink while looking relaxed and reading a newspaper in the DA’s caucus room in Dan Tloome chambers. As for Maphetle it was business as usual as he joined the ANC’s national executive committee and the provincial executive committee members on the street at a taxi rank on Monday to campaign for the bi-election next month. Among the leadership were ministers of social development, Ms Bathabile Dlamini; Tina Joemat-Pettersson; agriculture, forestry and fisheries and Gugile Nkwinti, rural development and land reform.
Mr Supra Mahumapelo, a provincial chairper- Eric Louw. son, was amongst the delegation. While the ANC was campaigning some residents were amazed by what is happening as the police were everywhere. Some of the community members who didn’t want to be named said “The ANC knows us when it’s election time and Maphetle doesn’t go to the community.” Others said, “Instead of the police arresting Maphetle for alleged corruption they are guarding him.”
High Court has to decide on power struggle in council Council speaker, Ms Barei Segotso, served High Court papers to the councillors as respondents on July 10. The court application is to set aside the illegal council sitting that took place on July 2. According to the ANC chief whip, Mr Dakota Legoete, the application is

tures Act, Act no. 117 of 1998, which allows the speaker to convene, call off, postpone and preside over all council meetings. In this regard, the speaker postponed the council meeting. Any meeting held outside the authority of the speaker when she was not sick, ad-
mitted to hospital or sent an apology is illegal and of no force,” said Dakota Legoete. “The DA will, on behalf of its councillors, fully respond to the application and is also considering a counterapplication,” said Mr Chris Hattingh, DA leader in the province.
Top police official investigated for showing nude photo’s to colleague

A case of sexual harassment is being investigated against a senior police officer in Potchefstroom. The Deputy Provincial Commissioner Maj.Gen Ryno Naidoo confirmed that a senior officer is implicated in a sexual harassment case and a criminal case and an internal investigation has been conducted. This follows an enquiry by the Herald after a report in the Sowetan of June 25 saying that the officer allegedly sent his junior female colleague, a police captain pornographic and raunchy e-mails. The captain, received an e-mail on 30 July 2012.
To her horror, the e-mail contained a picture of a half-naked woman, with her legs splayed in the air exposing her genitals. The captain laid a complaint which was not followed up, according to the Sowetan. Again on 6 November 2012, she was called to his office. They discussed work and other issues. The officer then handed her an envelope and asked her to open it at home while lying in bed alone. The captain took the envelope, and while outside his office she opened it to see what was inside. The captain was shocked when she found a pornographic magazine and 45 printed images of naked and semi-na-
ked women. Maj. Gen Naidoo said at this stage no report has been forward. Once it is
available the provincial commissioner will act on it, based on recommendation.

Ore hoor die besighede in en naby Olënlaan is erg omgekrap oor die hope vullis wat deesdae op die sypaadjie by die openbare toilet ophoop. Dis aartappelskille gemeng met ander afvalkos en kartonne en leë bottels wat party oggende amper ’n meter hoog lê.

Interessante maande lê voor Die toutrekkery tussen die ANC en die DA oor wie tans die wettige burgemeester is, en wat heel waarskynlik in die hof gaan draai, behoort gelukkig nie Potchefstroom se posisie as een van die top 38 stadsrade in Suid-Afrika te raak nie. Politieke kenner, Theo Venter, meen dié sterk posisie waarin die stad is, het waarskynlik verhoed dat die ANC die hele raad ontbind. Hulle kan dit eenvoudig nie bekostig nie omdat dit een van die min stadsrade is wat nog goed funksioneer. Dit is ook hoekom Venter meen die hele debakel oor die posisie van die burgemeester en wat daarmee saam gaan, soos die skorsing van 14 ANCraadslede, ook ’n nasionale uitkring kan hê wat sterk herinner aan toe Andries Beyers van die KP in 1992 ’n Nasionale Party-vesting soos Potchefstroom verower het. Dit dra ’n boodskap uit oor wat moontlik is, oor wat kan gebeur. Dit het dus ’n afkyk-faktor. Ander ANC-lede wat ook nie meer gediend is met die optrede van hul medelede nie kan dus sê maar kom ons doen dit ook. Die gevolge van wat tans dus hier aan die gebeur is, kan baie wyer uitkring as net hier plaaslik. Die verdere gevolg is dat hier tans 10- vakante wyke is. Agt van die veertien raadslede van die ANC wat geskors is, was wyksraadslede en twee het ontstaan met bedankings van ANC-raadslede ’n tyd gelede. Indien die ANC as gevolg van die woelinge byvoorbeeld drie wyke afstaan, kan dit ook die formule vir die berekening van die proporsionele lys beïnvloed en is dit moontlik dat ander partye nog raadslede bykry wat dus die verdeling van raadslede binne die raad verder tot nadeel van die ANC kan beïnvloed. ’n Maand of twee van onsekerheid lê voor totdat regsekerheid gekry word oor wie regeer Tlokwe Stadsraad, en dan ten minste 10 wyksverkiesings om politieke sekerheid te kry. Gelukkig is die stad in ’n goeie finansiële posisie, het relatief goeie administratiewe vermoë en sal dienslewering sonder veel onderbreking kan aangaan.
Dis die hoeveelste brief in die verband aan die betrokke raadslid. Die giftige plastiekvure op die Bult maak ons klaar en ons longe op. Die polisie is laks en laat die vure toe en die brandweer kan nie elke nag twee keer uitkom nie. Hulle word ook gatvol vir my geklaery.

Dehidrasie is van die mees algemeenste siektes waaraan mense te sterwe kom. Dr. Alphons Raats (Rotariër) het vir die pensioenarisse vertel van dehidrasie en gesê hoe om die lepeltjie te benut. Dankie Vader! Ek het polio oorwin, het net een nier, skoliose, diabetes, hoë bloeddruk en hartprobleme. PG ry met ’n koets sy nuwe lewensjaar in Op 6 Julie het die Rysmierbult- en Muiskraal-boeregemeenskap vir PG du Plessis en sy vrou, Marie, ’n verjaardagpartytjie gegee, en wat ’n fees! Om die Suid-Afrikaanse skrywer, storieverteller en legende se 79ste verjaardag te vier het sowat 125 gaste by Shabula Lodge bymekaar gekom waar PG en Marie met ‘n koets, getrek deur Atilla – Eugene Terblanche se perd – by die geselligheid aangekom het. Gaste het ten spyte van die koue
heerlik gekuier met musiek gemaak deur Anna Davel, Pietman Geldenhuys, Matthys Maree, Jannie du Toit en Alexa Strachan. Eie aan sy aard het PG die gaste vermaak met ’n kortverhaal asook stories uit die kontrei en die waarheid agter hoe hy sy wonderlike vrou ontmoet het. PG het beaam dat sonder sy vrou hy niks van sy mylpale sou kon bereik nie. PG en Marie is vanjaar 54 jaar getroud.
Feel en Martie Visser het onlangs hul 60ste huwerliksherdenking gevier.
60ste huweliksherdenking saam met geliefdes gevier
Deur Martelize Faber Feel en Martie Visser, jarelange inwoners van Potchefstroom, het onlangs hul sestigste huweliksherdenking saam met familie en vriende by Gracias Gastehuis gevier. Sowat 60 gaste het die herdenking bygewoon waar lekker saamgekuier, gelag en feesgevier is. Feel en Martie se drie dogters, Mari Kuhn, Selna en Andria, wat die geleentheid gereël het, het elk ’n spreukbeurt gehad waarin hulle die gaste welkom geheet, ’n heildronk op die egpaar inge-
stel en die tafelgebed gedoen het. Susan Killian, skoonsuster van Martie en gas op hul troudag, het staaltjies uit die egpaar se jonger dae met die gaste gedeel. Andria, jongste dogter van Feel en Martie, het vertel hoe Martie op hul troudag die gordyn voor die venster weggetrek het, net om te sien hoe dit saggies kapok en dat dit vir haar ’n teken van die Here se seën op haar ouers se huwelik was. Sestig jaar later kon dié egpaar hierdie spesiale dag met hul geliefdes deel en steeds die Here se seën ervaar.
Busdiensstigter vier sy 84ste verjaardag Wat begin het as ’n idee is nou al jare ‘n betroubare busdiens. Gert Kruger, stigter van Kruger Busdiens, nou bekend as Midway Bus Service, het onlangs sy 84ste verjaardag by The Roots Lifestyle Centre gevier. Gert is nie die enigste befaamde persoon in die familie nie. Sy broers-
kind, Mariëtta Kruger, is die bekende radiopersoonlikheid en aanbieder van Kokkedoor en het die spesiale dag saam met hulle kom geniet. Mariëtta se pa, prof. Henk Kruger, was op sy dag ‘’n professor by die PUK se Opvoedkundige Sielkunde Departement.

Sakelui snoer kragte saam In die uitgawe van 13 Julie 1993 berig die Herald dat die Aksiegroep, wat vroeër in die stad gestig is om a-polities ondersteuning te gee aan sekere waardes en normes met die aanvang van die nuwe bedeling, besig is om hulle te beywer vir die stigting van ’n Potchefstroom Besigheidsforum. Hulle standpunt was dat veranderinge wat by plaaslike bestuur gaan plaasvind ook sakeondernemings gaan raak en dat die beoogde forum ’n belangegroep vanuit die breë gemeenskap moet wees. Hulle het hierin ook die ondersteuning van die destydse Potchefstroomse Afrikaanse Sakekamer gehad. Die besigheidsforum is later wel gestig. Na latere samesmelting met die sakekamer het dit die Potchefstroom Besigheidsassosiasie geheet. Nadat dit na ’n paar jaar redelik on-
aktief geraak het, is die Potch-Tlokwe Sakekamer sowat twee jaar gelede op die been gebring. Daar word ook berig oor Telkom se gespook om al die navrae te hanteer toe sowat 17 000 telefoonnommers Vrydag 9 Julie 1993 verander het. Tot soveel as vier oproepe elke vyftien sekondes is ontvang en dertig mense se hulp moes ingeroep word om te kom help verduidelik! Die Herald berig ook oor mnr. Andries Mongalane - die eerste swart aanklaer in die landdroshof, in Potchefstroom. Die Pellisier-week het ook toe in die stad plaasgevind waartydens volksdanse gedoen word. Op sportgebied het drie Pote die hokkie SAO-span gehaal. Die Pote, vir die jonges onder ons, was die studente van die destydse Potchefstroomse Onderwyskollege.

Sonatas for violin Susan van and fortepiano der Linde The Dutch violinist Antoinette Lohmann and South African fortepianist John Reid Coulter’s concert will take place at in Potchefstroom, at the NG Moedergemeente, July 17 at 19:30 that will feature Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Sonatas in E minor KV 304 & G major KV 379, Magarethe Danzi: Sonata III in E major and Joseph Martin Kraus: Sonata in C major. Both Antoinette and John will be playing on instruments for which this music was written. Antoinette will play on an unaltered Viennese violin built by Sebastian Dalinger in 1790 and John plays on a copy (built by him in 1986) of a Stein fortepiano circa 1780. John Reid Coulter is one of South Africa’s leading exponents of Historical Performance Practice. After completing his harpsichord studies at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague he returned to SA and has taught at a number of universities throughout South Africa. Ilené Grobbelaar (13) en haar perd, Lady Ariska, het vanjaar vir die eerste keer aan Fauresmith deelgeneem wat gereken word as een van die moeilikste uithouritte. Daar het 28 kinders ingeskryf waarvan net 15 klaargemaak het. Ilené het die rit in slegs 15 ure en 15 minute voltooi. Ruiter en perd moet binne ’n sekere tyd 201 kilometer voltooi en ’n gemiddelde spoed van 13 km per uur moet oor die drie dae gehandhaaf word om die rit betyds klaar te maak. Die pad wat hul moet ry, is ’n groot uitdaging. Die baan gaan deur koppies en klowe en ruiters moet op sommige plekke van die perd afklim om seker te maak dat die perd nie te moeg of beseer word nie. Die hartklop van die perd moet onder 64 wees. Dit was Ilené en Ariska se eerste Fauresmith. Saam het Ilené en Ariska nou al ses 80 km ritte en ook Fauresmith suksesvol voltooi.
Maandagoggend was daar ’n parade waar al die perde en ruiters om die veld stap met hul span-uitrustings. Die rit het Dinsdagoggend amptelik begin. Na elke been van ongeveer 25 km moet ’n veearts die perd ondersoek. Daar word onder meer gekyk of die perd nie dehidreer of seer spiere het, of kruppel is nie. As die perd deur die veearts die groen lig kry om verder te ry, het die perd en ruiter 20 minute om te rus voor hulle die volgende 25 km aandurf. Elke aand moet daar met die perde gestap word om te verseker dat hulle nie styf word nie en die perde word dan met wortels bederf. As hul oor die wenstreep is, word die perd vir die laaste keer deur die veeartse ondersoek en as die perd reg is, het die ruiter eers die rit voltooi. Ilené het ook NW-kleure vir uithouritte gekry en sien al klaar weer uit na haar volgende rit op 17Augustus waar sy 120 km gaan ry.

Kiewiet Marais se duifie, no WPUD 09074, het sy tweede wen Saterdag gevlieg, om vir hom ’n uiters aangename verjaardag geskenk te gee met sy halfeeu wording. Dis ook sy vierde wen agtereenvolgens. Die stadige wenspoed van 66,5 km.u was te wyte aan ’n redelike sterk kopwind. Sy hokmeester Gerhard Kirsten eindig 7 sekondes na hom, terwyl George Loxton weer onder die eerste 3 eindig. Springbok-atletiekafrigter Christo Snyman eindig vierde en Chris Stemmet vyfde. In die ope-afdeling maak Salty en Lettie de Villiers dié naweek hulle s’n met ’n puik oorwinning van 3 min 15 sek! Jan to compete in the World Masters Athletics Championships Jan Prinsloo recently received the news that he will be competing at the World Masters Athletics Championships which will take place in Alegre, Brazil from 16 to 27 October. “The news caught me completely off guard” says the 75-year-old sprinter who say he feels 30 years younger after receiving the good news. Jan who will run in the 100 yards is part of 25 other senior athletes who will represent South Africa. “I recently had discussions in Cape Town with the Deputy Minister of Sport & Recreation, Mr Gert Oosthuizen and the MEC for Sport and Culture in the Western Cape, Dr Ivan Meyer, and approached them to assist in paving the way for SA Masters Athletics in
South Africa to reach out to everyone.” There is a dire need to reach out to old and new athletes over the age of 30 years and to invite them to register. “Next year the South African championships that are to take place in Rustenburg will surely be the best ever.” Jan is also a legend in the South African Rugby League and was also honoured this week when he got the good news from SA’s Rugby League international development officer in Australia, Mr. Nige Goos, that he is to be honoured as the first South African rugby league player whose name is to appear in the Rugby League’s hall of fame in South Africa. His particulars will also be forwarded to all other rugby league play-
ing nations in the world. Before Jan Prinsloo signed up to play rugby league in the early sixties, he played for several top union rugby
clubs in South Africa as wing and full back and also represented Northern Transvaal Rugby, now known as the Blue Bulls.
Kyle Isherwood, Wayne Niemack (manager), Gareth Craigen, Ruan Thompson and Dylan Niemack were selected to represent the u.11 Squash for North West at the annual Angela Difford Squash Festival. The festival was held in Pretoria from the 22 to 25 June. The team did very well, and won almost every game. Dragon Boat racing comes to Potch
Potch Mooi is presenting a Dragon Boat Festival in October.
Chané Scheepers This year Potch will see something they have never seen before, a Dragon racing festival! The Rotary Club Potch Mooi is presenting a Dragon Boat Festival on Potch Dam during October in conjunction with the Dragon Boat Association of Gauteng. Local teams will compete against each other in a knock-out and plate competition. “The focus of the day’s dragon boat racing is to raise funds for the various projects that the Rotary Club undertakes to address identified needs in the community of Potchefstroom. This day will also herald the start of an initiative to establish this sport in the city. Dragon boat racing is coming to Potch,” says Tammy Buchanan, communication officer of the Rotary Club Potch Mooi. The day promises to provide an entertaining outing for the whole family. Twenty teams can be accommodated and the process of inviting the competing teams is well under way. For spectators the normal dam admission fees will apply. Various local welfare organisations will be providing refreshments stalls to provide sustenance during the course of the day.

Potch Dorp weer Neserkampioen Annemie Bester Potch-Dorp het Saterdag op hulle tuisveld die Neserliga met sukses verdedig toe hulle die leeus van Leeudoringstad se tande getrek en die eindstryd 29-0 gewen het. Dorp was uit die staanspoor in beheer van sake en het die voortou na sowat 20 minute geneem danksy ’n strafdoel deur Chris Erasmus. Die groot agtsteman en kaptein, Deon Thiart, het duidelik ’n lus vir drieë druk gehad nadat hy verlede naweek in die halfeindstryd sommer twee keer so gemaak het. Dié keer was hy weereens die eerste Potch-Dorper wat die doellyn oorgesteek het maar dit het harde werk en feitlik die hele

Derik op pad na Frankryk vir wêreldkampioenskappe Derik Schutte, Potchefstroom se eie paralimpiese atleet, vertrek op 14 Julie na Lyon Frankryk waar hy gaan deelneem aan die IPC Wêreldkampioenskappe in spiesgooi en diskus. In 2011 in Christchurch New Zeeland het Derik ’n bronsmedalje by die wêreldkampioenskappe in spiesgooi gekry, en ’n vierde plek by die 2012 paralimpiese spele in Londen. Derik het voorheen hom toegespits op spiesgooi maar het nou ook gekwalifiseer om deel te neem in diskus. Derik neem deel aan die klas F42 synde die klas vir amputasie bo die knie. Derik spog tans met ’n afstand van 47.81 meter wat ook die tweede beste afstand hierdie jaar in die wêreld in spiesgooi is. Derik is tans die Suid-Afrikaanse en Afrika-spiesgooi rekordhouer met ’n afstand van 48.81 meter, ’n afstand wat hy opgestel het tydens die paralimpiese spele in Londen in 2012.

Die Luiperds het Vrydagaand op Olënpark hardlooprugby vir die fynproewer uitgestal en sewe skitterdrieë in hul oorwinning van 50-25 oor die Valke gedruk. Die twee juniors, Luther Obi en Sylvian Mahuza, het hul buigings in die Luiperds se senior trui elkeen met ’n drie gevier in ’n stryd wat deur die tuisspan se snellers gewen is. Danie Dames het die tafel reeds in die openingsminute gedek deur buite om Jongi Nokwe te hardloop en Obi deur te jaag vir sy eerste drie in die Luiperdtrui. Daarna het Edmar Marais twee keer na mekaar gedruk en albei kere het hy deur sy teenstander gehardloop na ’n skitterlopie deur Obi gedruk nadat hy ’n kort skoppie opgevolg het.
