At the start of each holiday, I turn on my oven to 400 degrees, open my freezer and take out an apple pie made lovingly by my daughter and three grandsons, Herbie, Sam and Gael.

They live in Halifax, so the apple pie warms my heart with fond memories of the holidays we spent together.

Herbie, who is eight, emailed me to say he can now make apple pies on his own. He wanted to check to see if I have enough pie to carry me though the winter until our next visit. Otherwise, he would send me some.
