OF POTATOHEADS AND POLAROIDS My Life Inside and Out of Pearl Jam By Mike McCready
Ever since the legendary band Pearl Jam was first created, its lead guitarist, Mike McCready, could always be counted on to have his trusty Polaroid camera at his side. He went on to document years of touring, meeting scores of his heroes, spending time with friends, experiencing art, nature, and architecture. Not one to take things too seriously, Mike often brought along his pal, Mr. Potato Head and would ask celebrities, friends, and strangers alike to take a Polaroid photo with him. Needless to say, Mike got endless strange looks and creative poses in response. From the hills of Hollywood to our nation’s capitol, and from the capitols of Europe to the Pacific Rim islands, Mike has travelled the world many times over photographing one inspiring moment and experience at a time, adding—visual piece by piece—to the vast tapestry of his life’s interests and passions. PHOTOGRAPHY - MUSIC - CELEBRITY HARDCOVER, 240 PAGES, 8 X 10 INCHES, 400 PHOTOS ISBN 978-1-57687-835-4 $35.00 US/CAN
Mike McCready is the lead guitarist for, and one of the founding members of, rock band Pearl Jam. He was also a member of side-project bands Temple of the Dog, Mad Season, and The Rockfords. In addition to Pearl Jam, McCready currently plays with friends in Flight to Mars, a UFO tribute band which does charity events. When not performing live, McCready scores TV and film projects which have included The Glamour & the Squalor, Shameless, Fat Kid Rules the World, Hawaii Five-O, Fringe, and The Westsiders.

With intimate images of not only his Pearl Jam band-mates behind the scenes at venues, jamming together in someone’s living room, or taking it easy at the beach, Mike also captures an eclectic mix of athletes, musicians, and celebrities including an elated Venus Williams, a goofy Jimmy Fallon, and a menacing Henry Rollins among many other stars. Mike also trained his lens from the stage at countless Pearl Jam concerts and photographed legions of adoring and jubilant fans. Of Potato Heads and Polaroids makes Mike’s life a little more fun and real in an increasingly digital world. He thinks it’ll do the same for you.

MIDNIGHT MODERN
Palm Springs Under the Full Moon By Tom Blachford Essay by Chris Menrad
Midnight Modern brings into focus a view of Palm Springs and its internationally renowned modernist houses never before shown, shot entirely by the light of the full moon.
PHOTOGRAPHY - SUBJECTS & THEMES - LANDSCAPES HARDCOVER, 144 PAGES, 14 X 9.5 INCHES, 80 PHOTOS ISBN 978-1-57687-834-7 $65.00 US/CAN
Tom Blachford’s photography has a way of connecting the familiar with the surreal, rendering functional, man-made structures into strange and beautiful dreams. Based in Melbourne, Australia, his fascination with texture and shape, made for a natural transition into the world of architecture. Blachford’s work has been featured in Domus, Wired, Curbed, Dwell, Vogue, and Wallpaper*. Chris Menrad, a Southern California native, was drawn to Palm Springs in 1999 by its abundance of modernist architecture. He is a founding board member of the Palm Springs Modern Committee, an organization dedicated to the preservation of Desert Modern architecture, and a real estate agent specializing in architectural properties in the Coachella Valley. He lives in a Krisel-designed home, which was the first Palm Springs’ Class One historic Krisel/ Alexander-built house.
POWERHOUSE BOOKS FALL/WINTER 20122017 POWERHOUSE BOOKS SPRING
Created over the course of three years by Australian photographer Tom Blachford, the surreal images function as portals in time, with the homes, cars, and beautiful scenery appearing almost exactly as it all did 60 years ago. The crisp moonlight adds a new dimension to the famous mecca of desert modernism and shows a contrasting side to a town famous for its sunshine, cocktails, and hedonism. Working closely with the Palm Springs community Blachford gained remarkable access to some of the most coveted architectural jewels in the area, including the Kaufmann House, Edris House, Frey House II, Sinatra House, and dozens of restored Alexander Tract homes in the valley. Blachford’s work builds on the famous documentary and lifestyle approaches of Slim Aarons and Julius Shulman, but injects a signature mystery. His cinematic aesthetic acts as a stage for an untold narrative, inviting the viewer to script their own drama going on behind the walls of these historic homes. This original, lush work is a rich contribution to the record for those mid-century architecture and design lovers fascinated by Palm Springs.

MIKE TYSON 1981-1991
By Lori Grinker Introduction by Mike Tyson It all began with an art school photography assignment: Lori Grinker was shooting a project on young boxers under the guidance of the legendary trainer Cus D’Amato. Her main focus became a nine-year-old boxer Billy Hamm. While photographing him, Cus wandered over and asked why Lori was shooting that kid, when the bigger kid in the corner working a speed bag would one day be the heavyweight champion of the world! The kid was a then 13-year-old Mike Tyson. Lori’s early boxing photographs of Mike Tyson are without peer—little exists from that era and all of Grinker’s work is personal with uniquely privileged access in and out of the ring. Over the next decade Lori would photograph the coterie that surrounded Mike; Cus’s funeral, going home to Brownsville, old friends, trips abroad, in hotel suites before and after fights, his hook-up with Robin Givens, their wedding, their divorce, and the training and fights in between, until Tyson’s first defeat—the Buster Douglas fight in 1991. This is a side of the Mike Tyson story rarely seen or shared.
PHOTOGRAPHY - SUBJECTS & THEMES - SPORTS - BOXING HARDCOVER, 100 PAGES, 7.25 X 11.5 INCHES, 136 PHOTOS ISBN 978-1-57687-776-0 $40.00 US/CAN
Lori Grinker is an award-winning documentary photographer and author. Internationally published and exhibited, her work has garnered many awards, including a New York Foundation for the Arts Grant and a Hasselblad Foundation Grant. She has published two books: The Invisible Thread: A Portrait of Jewish American Women, and Afterwar: Veterans from a World in Conflict. A lecturer at Yale since 2010, she also teaches at NYU Graduate school of Journalism, and is on the faculty of the International Center of Photography (ICP). Her photographs are held in the collections of ICP, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Israel Museum, Jerusalem; and San Francisco MoMA (among others). She is represented by Nailya Alexander Gallery in New York, and has been a member of Contact Press Images since 1988.

101 Survivors of Gun Violence in America By Kathy Shorr Introduction by Max Kozloff
The increasing ubiquity of gun violence has unfortunately become the norm across the world and particularly in the United States, where we have begun to hear about horror after horror on an almost daily basis. It has started to produce a numbing effect, a helplessness that allows us to hear the news and say, “Here we go again,” and put it out of our mind. Gun violence is now something we expect to happen.
PHOTOGRAPHY - SUBJECTS & THEMES - PORTRAITS HARDCOVER, 136 PAGES, 10 X 10 INCHES, 200 PHOTOS ISBN 978-1-57687-833-0 $39.95 US/CAN
Kathy Shorr was born in Brooklyn, New York. She is a photographer whose work crosses the borders of documentary, portraiture, and street photography. She received her undergraduate degree in photography from The School of Visual Arts. She also has an MS in Education that was received while working as a New York Teaching Fellow in public schools in crisis. Her work has been shown in galleries in New York City and was featured in the celebrated Visa Pour L’Image in Perpignan, France. She lives and works in New York City. Max Kozloff is a New York-based writer on art and photography. He has had several shows of his own color street photography, exemplified in his monograph New York Over the Top, Contrasto, 2013. He is the author of The Theatre of the Face: Portrait Photography Since 1900 (Phaidon, 2007).

The goal of SHOT is to focus attention on the survivors of gun violence—people who have been shot and survived the experience. From across the United States, survivors from all races, many ethnicities, and from ages 8—80, including high and low-profile shootings—are the united faces of “survivorhood.” Those 101 images of 101 different, relatable people who have gone through this life altering experience. The majority of portraits are taken at the location of the shootings. This adds another dimension to SHOT as most of these locations are banal, “normal” places we all visit: shopping centers, places of entertainment, churches, neighborhood streets, gyms, movie theaters, etc. Many of the shootings actually occur in the survivors’ homes or in their cars. Shootings occur everywhere. Gun owners and NRA member are also included. It is not meant to be polarizing but rather to connect us to each other. SHOT allows us to explore the truth about the lived experience of gun violence in America.

To live in Spanish Harlem, New York’s oldest barrio, is to confront some of the city’s most endemic problems: crime, drugs, AIDS, and chronic unemployment. Yet the mecca where Puerto Ricans first established themselves in the 1940s is now the “capital of Hispanic America”—home to 120,000 people, half of whom are Latino. Shot in the midto-late ’80s, Joseph Rodriguez’s superb photographs bring us into the heart of Spanish Harlem, capturing a spirit and a time that survives despite the ravages of poverty. In a now-distant landscape littered with abandoned buildings, ominous alleyways, and plagues of addiction, the residents of Spanish Harlem persevered with flamboyant style and gritty self-reliance. From idyllic scenes of children playing under the sprinklers on the playground, or performing the Bomba Plena on “Old Timer’s Day,” to shocking images of men shooting up speedballs and children dying of AIDS, Rodriguez showcases a day in the life of the barrio. From the author: Spanish Harlem is a place I have experienced in my adolescence. I always remembered Ben E. King’s song, “There is a Rose in Spanish Harlem.” As a teenager, my uncle had a candy store there. Often my cousin and I would make the long journey uptown on the subway from Brooklyn to visit him at his store. People on the block would come by to play dominoes, listen to the music of Puente, Palmeri, Colon, drink beer and talk about baseball. I was always excited to listen to the many stories of the streets of the barrio. I did not begin to photograph El Barrio Spanish Harlem until I was a student at the International Center of Photography in the mid ’80s. My teacher Fred Ritchin (then the director of the documentary program) had given us students a group assignment on the gentrification of East Harlem. After completion of the documentary, which was for fundraising and public awareness, I began to look closer at this community. I was very frustrated to see the only time the local newspapers mentioned El Barrio was when crimes were committed. I knew then that I had to spend time to try and break these stereotypes. I began by going inside, behind the closed doors of many of its families, shops, churches, and cultural institutions. I photographed from 1985-1990.

BROS & BROSEPHINES By Slava Mogutin
Over the past two decades, the exiled Russian artist Slava Mogutin has gained international acclaim for his gritty, candid portrayal of disaffected youth and documentation of alternative urban subcultures, as well as his writings, multimedia work, and political activism. Bros & Brosephines is a survey of Mogutin’s studio and fashion photography, commissioned portraits and previously unpublished outtakes, and behind-thescenes shots. From his early raw film snapshots to elaborate sets and post-production manipulations, the book offers Mogutin’s signature explosive blend of art, fashion, and fetish, transcending and dissecting the conventional notions of beauty and masculinity. The monograph also features Mogutin’s collaborations with fellow artists, including Brian Kenny, Steven Klein, Josh Lee, Asher Levine, François Sagat, and Nicolas Santos. Chapters:

For over two years, photographer Thomas Roma mounted his camera on an 8-foot pole and projected it out and over the dogs at a dusty Brooklyn dog run in order to photograph their shadows. Plato’s Dogs is simultaneously foreign and familiar in its depiction of its subjects. On one hand, the dogs look little like themselves in the pictures, distorted and featureless in their silhouettes. But on the other, they appear truer to their essential self, their primitive substance and oddly—given the misleading nature of the shadow in Plato’s cave allegory— closer to their Platonic form. Looking through the pictures, one shadow wilder than the next, it’s hard not to come to view the canines’ shade as their spirit—an outward projection of how they see themselves for those precious hours when they’re off the leash at the park, self-actualizing. (Notably, in their obscured rendering, their collars disappear.) Some resemble fearsome wolves, some stoic water buffalo, and some a new breed of creature altogether, but never a pet, never the animal that will later sleep at the foot of your bed. This is our 10th title with Thomas Roma, making him far and away our most published author.

How Passion Brands Are Built in the Age of Digital Distribution By Jeff Rosenblum and Jordan Berg
Advertising is one of the world’s most beloved and glamorized industries. Hundreds of books, movies, and even reality TV shows are devoted to it. It consumes billions of dollars a year. But it has a dirty little secret: it is so wildly ineffective that it borders on a global scam. Research proves that almost 90% of traditional TV ads are ignored. Cutting edge platforms like social media fare even worse. In fact, you have a better chance of surviving a plane crash than clicking on a banner ad. BUSINESS & ECONOMICS - MARKETING HARDCOVER, 240 PAGES, 7.5 X 9.5 INCHES, 240 PHOTOS ISBN 978-1-57687-836-1 $27.50 US/CAN
Jeff Rosenblum and Jordan Berg are pioneers, disruptors, innovators, and admitted pains in the ass. Already recognized as leaders of the advertising industry, they are ready to pull back the cloak and reveal how breakthrough brands are really built. Over the past two decades, they have led teams that have helped revolutionize market research, financial services, publishing, sports broadcasting, and consumer packaged goods. They have worked with some of the world’s top brands and analyzed decades of data to truly understand what drives outsized success. They recently wrote and directed The Naked Brand, a documentary film about the future of advertising. It reveals a surprising story about the industry’s ability to help save the planet one small step at a time. Through the documentary and regular contributions to Advertising Age, Fast Company, Digiday, and iMediaConnection they have built a network of fans and supporters. They’ve been featured in Newsweek, Fox Business Network, and Bloomberg TV. They have also presented to large crowds at nearly every major industry conference and guest lectured at some of the world’s top universities. In addition, their agency, Questus, has won scores of awards, including back-to-back Agency of the Year honors. Jeff and Jordan are tireless promoters who pride themselves on being willing to try anything at least once. This has led to them fighting in the “Vermont Toughman Competition,” jumping in the frozen Atlantic Ocean to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and building a school in a remote village in Nepal.

The authors of Friction give you insider access to this scam. Having worked on some of the industry’s most innovative assignments, they’ve seen what truly builds breakout brands. Brands that outperform the competition ten to one. Intuitively, all brands know a new approach is needed. They know that technology has permanently altered their relationship with consumers. Every day, stalwart brands find themselves losing market share to upstarts that have captured our collective consciousness. Trillions of dollars are spent while brands adopt the newest technology. But they fail miserably because the strategic underpinnings need to change. Great brands can no longer be built by interrupting the audience with paid advertising. It annoys instead of enriches. It repels instead of attracts. Friction argues that brands don’t need a new shiny, technological object. They need a fundamental change in strategy. The book offers a new paradigm for success in a world that’s increasingly rejecting advertising. It’s the roadmap. It’s the why and the how of the new landscape. It provides a system for embracing transparency, engaging audiences, building armies of evangelists and unleashing unprecedented growth.

LUCÍA THE LUCHADORA By Cynthia Leonor Garza Illustrations by Alyssa Bermudez
Lucía zips through the playground in her cape just like the boys, but when they tell her “girls can’t be superheroes,” suddenly she doesn’t feel so mighty. That’s when her beloved abuela reveals a dazzling secret: Lucía comes from a family of luchadoras, the bold and valiant women of the Mexican lucha libre tradition. Cloaked in a flashy new disguise, Lucía returns as a recess sensation! But when she’s confronted with a case of injustice, Lucía must decide if she can stay true to the ways of the luchadora and fight for what is right, even if it means breaking the sacred rule of never revealing the identity behind her mask. A story about courage and cultural legacy, Lucía the Luchadora is full of pluck, daring, and heart.
JUVENILE NFICTION - ACTION & ADVENTURE - PEOPLE & PLACES - MEXICO - FAMILY - MULTIGENERATIONAL HARDCOVER, 32 PAGES, 8.5 X 10.25 INCHES, 32 ILLUSTRATIONS ISBN 978-1-57687-827-9 $16.99 US/CAN
Cynthia Leonor Garza spent most of her childhood under the hot South Texas sun running around with her three brothers. She’s a journalist who has worked for several newspapers and her commentaries have appeared on NPR and in The Atlantic. Of all the lucha libre masks she owns, her favorite one is pink and gold. She currently lives with her two young daughters and husband in Washington, D.C. This is her first picture book.

Through vibrant and playful graphics, baby talk meets street slang in this fun documentation of Brooklyn’s Millennial moment.

His professional portfolio includes a bespoke bar in his family’s restaurant and designs for Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. He received a Master of Architecture from Columbia University where his research focused on material studies, graphic representation, and color theory. He is also a trained improviser and can be found performing on the New York comedy circuit.
