SYMMETRYBREAKFAST

100 Recipes for the Loving Cook By Michael Zee

From the Instagram phenomenon, SYMMETRYBREAKFAST, this is a cookbook about the most important meal of the day—how to make it with love, present it with style and eat it with pleasure to feed not only your own soul, but the souls of your loved ones too. Alongside 100 international inspired recipes, gorgeous photography and lessons in the art of food-styling, this unconventional cookbook explores what breakfast is and what it means to people around the world. Surprising with the foreign and delighting with the familiar, it offers ideas for perfectly plated assembly breakfasts to more complex dishes for seasoned cooks, and recipes with great stories behind them. COOKING-BREAKFAST/COURSES & DISHES/ETHNICITY Hardcover, 8-3/4 x 8-3/4 inches, 272 pages ISBN 978-1-57687-818-7 $24.95 US/CAN

Michael Zee studied photography at the Arts Institute at Bournemouth and later went on to teach Art and Design in secondary schools in London’s East End. He then completed his masters in Museums and Galleries in Education and works in public programming at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. Michael’s passion for cooking comes from his parents and his mixed English, Scottish and Chinese heritage. Weekends and school holidays would be spent working in his father’s Chinese and English chippies in Liverpool and teaching himself to bake for his mother’s sweet tooth. Michael created SymmetryBreakfast for his partner Mark in their Hackney flat in 2013. Mark’s hectic job as a menswear fashion designer means late nights and weekends in the office. Early on in their relationship, breakfast became a sacred moment in the day and Michael started on his mission to make each meal as celebratory as possible. Over 700 breakfasts later, Michael still wakes up early to make breakfast for Mark, looking carefully around the world and at home for inspiration, taking a simple idea and making it beautiful.

THE ARTISTS’ AND WRITERS’ COOKBOOK By Natalie Eve Garrett

THE ARTISTS’ AND WRITERS’ COOKBOOK contains personal, food-related essays with recipes from celebrated artists and writers. The essays are at turns comedic and heart-wrenching, intimate and apocalyptic, with recipes that are enchanting to read and recreate. Many are incredibly delicious too, although the book also encompasses the imaginary, the charmingly bizarre-gross and the almost-disastrous. Inspired by a book from 1961, The (original) Artists’ & Writers’ Cookbook included brief anecdotes and recipes from the likes of Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Marianne Moore and Harper Lee. This new, illustrated version includes essays with recipes from Neil Gaiman, Joyce Carol Oates, Marina Abramović, Nelson DeMille, T.C. Boyle, Ed Ruscha, Aimee Bender, Sanford Biggers, Alice Hoffman, Gregory Crewdson, Edwidge Danticat, John Currin, Paul Muldoon, Francesca Lia Block, Anthony Doerr, Heidi Julavits, Padgett Powell, Leanne Shapton, James Franco and many others. COOKING/ESSAYS & NARRATIVES/FICTION-LITERARY Hardcover, 8 x 10 inches, 176 pages ISBN 978-1-57687-788-3   $30.00 US/CAN

Natalie Eve Garrett is an artist, writer, and editor. Her work can often be seen in Lenny and on The Hairpin. A graduate of Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Design, Natalie lives in a town just outside DC and along the Potomac River with her husband and two children.

In the book, Joyce Carol Oates recalls an achingly simple, final meal. Neil Gaiman makes a perfectly eerie cheese omelette while Ed Ruscha makes his cactus omelette in times of doom. James Franco admits he’s best friends with PB&J. Marina Abramović shares her recipe for “fire food” and Anthony Doerr finds both huckleberries and happiness. Nelson DeMille reminisces about a meal he ate 40 years ago when serving in Vietnam. Maile Meloy joins an island cult via sweet potato almond muffins; Amber Dermont cracks open, disassemble and then perfectly reassembles a lobster with her bare hands. Sanford Biggers updates a Soul food classic. Daniel Wallace woos with an eggplant sandwich, and Francesca Lia Block tells us how to fall in love. The real joy comes from discovering this secret portal into the kitchens of beloved artists and writers. I hope you jump in.

NO SLEEP.

NYC Nightlife Flyers 1988-1999

By DJ Stretch Armstrong, Evan Auerbach, Peter Prudente NO SLEEP. is a visual history of the halcyon days of New York City club life as told through flyer art. Spanning the late 80s through the late 90s, when nightlife buzz travelled via flyers and word of mouth, NO SLEEP. features a collection of artwork from the personal archives of NYC DJs, promoters, club kids, nightlife impresarios and the artists themselves. Club flyers, by design, were ephemeral objects distributed on street corners, outside of nightclubs and concert halls, in barbershops and retail shops and not intended to be preserved for posterity. Through the 90s, they became both increasingly prevalent and more sophisticated as printing technology evolved. Overnight, however, with the birth of the internet, the club flyer essentially disappeared, and despite it being common for promoters to print thousands of flyers for any given event, they now remain rare. MUSIC-RAP & HIP-HOP/DESIGN/GRAPHIC ARTS/ADVERTISING Hardcover, 9 x 11 inches, 224 pages ISBN 978-1-57687-808-8 $39.95 US / CAN

Stretch Armstrong is a world renowned DJ, record producer and radio personality. He’s been a fixture in the New York hiphop scene since the late ‘80s, when he started DJing downtown and making his own concert flyers with cardboard, scissors, and glue. His posters expressed the bold aesthetic of early hiphop, and in 1990 he cocreated the “Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito Show” on WKCR 89.9, which The Source magazine later named “The Greatest HipHop Radio Show Of All Time.” Stretch and Bobbito introduced the world to Jay Z, WuTang, Nas, and Eminem, and dozens of other seminal figures in hiphop. In 2015 Stretch starred in a documentary about the show. Peter “Oasis” Prudente has been a behind the scenes music maven since the ‘90s, when he put on concerts for emerging stars including Eminem, Outkast, and The Roots. As a keen talent scout with connections to famous New York venues, Peter placed artists on huge stages at pivotal points in their careers. His understanding of hiphop’s popularity led him to design, print, and distribute his own concert posters, and by his early twenties he started Live N’ Direct, a multiplatform concert and event production firm that produced shows for Ghostface Killah, Mobb Deep, Kid Cudi, and more. He was known to flood barbershops and record stores with his concert flyers. Evan Auerbach is the most popular hiphop historian on the Internet. His career as a blogger and archivist has made him the #1 source for providing rare hiphop memorabilia to the masses, and his website UpNorthTrips continues to be pivotal in sparking a modern wave of obsession with hiphop flyers, promo material, and posters. A walking encyclopedia of rap knowledge, Evan has played an essential role in revitalizing music media’s nostalgia for ‘90s ephemera and landmark hiphop events. POWERHOUSE FALL/WINTER 2012 POWERHOUSE BOOKSBOOKS FALL 2016

DJ Stretch Armstrong, Peter Oasis and Evan Auerbach of UpNorthTrips unearthed the flyers presented here to create the most impressive collection of club flyers and concert bills compiled to date. What you will see in this book are the humble beginnings of now household names Mark Ronson, Moby, Sean “Puffy’ Combs, Eminem, Funkmaster Flex, among others. These names were made after dark, and their reps grew bigger each time they were featured on a flyer.

POWERHOUSE FALL/WINTER 2012 POWERHOUSE BOOKS BOOKS  FALL 2016

LO-LIFE: AN AMERICAN CLASSIC takes the reader on a trip to New York City in the early 80s--a time when crime and violence ran the streets. The famed street gang, The Lo-Lifes emerged from this tumultuous time. Formed by crews of teenagers from the Brownsville and Crown Heights neighborhoods of Brooklyn, they made a name for themselves by dressing head to toe in highly coveted Ralph Lauren clothing or “Lo.” Polo apparel--and other preppy 80s fashion brands like Guess, Nautica, and Benetton, among others--presented an aspirational lifestyle for these kids from rough neighborhoods just struggling to get by. Fighting for style and survival, the Lo-Lifes targeted these brands, and would acquire them by any means necessary--including stick-ups, shoplifting, and hustling. A reign of terror ensued, when your new winter coat could make you the target for a robbery or worse. What started as an informal gang uniform, organized around clean designs and bright colors, became a devotion to a lifestyle brand, and eventually created an association between the streets and luxury that would fundamentally change the foundation of the fashion industry. LO-LIFE: AN AMERICAN CLASSIC documents the personal collections of archival Polo apparel and neverbefore-seen vintage photographs amassed by the crew. And through countless interviews with original members, as well as individuals from the worlds of fashion, hip-hop, and art, presents the first comprehensive oral history of this notorious New York collective. It tells the remarkable story of how a small group of teenagers fighting to make a name for themselves eventually made themselves seen, heard, and emulated globally.

Born and raised in Belgrade, Serbia, Boogie began photographing rebellion and unrest during the civil war that ravaged his country during the 1990s. He has published six monographs, IT’S ALL GOOD (powerHouse Books, 2006), BOOGIE (powerHouse Books, 2007), SAO PAULO (Upper Playground, 2008), ISTANBUL (Upper Playground, 2008) , BELGRADE BELONGS TO ME (powerHouse Books, 2009), A WAH DO DEM (Drago Publishing 2015). An updated edition with new never-before-seen images, IT’S ALL GOOD remains a gritty, graphic, and gripping exposé of the underworld and its inhabitants. The original and first renowned monograph by Boogie, presents the predators and the prey in the drug game today. Shot in New York City’s most notorious neighborhoods--Bushwick, Bedford-Stuyvesant, and Queensbridge--Boogie gained intimate access into a world few dare to venture, a world closed to outsiders, a world of crackheads, junkies, and gangsters. From the cops patrolling the project roofs to the addicts overdosing on the streets, IT’S ALL GOOD chronicles ghetto life in stark, heart-stopping images and intense testimonials. Boogie brings us to a place few will leave and most will stay, a place where escape is one rock, one shot, one glock away.

“A whole lot of initiations happen every day. You hear about them on the news, but you don’t know it was an initiation. You hear about somebody getting shot somewhere in New York, and nobody knows why that person got shot; nine times out of ten it was a gang initiation. I am a threestar general in the Bloods, so I knowvv what’s going on. The majority of crime in New York City is ‘cause of gangs; drugs, killings, stabbings, robberies, even the bullshit car theft, the fucking pettiest crimes and misdemeanors are all ‘cause of gangs.” -Kasino, from his testimonial in It’s All Good

THE EYES OF THE CITY By Richard Sandler

Timing, skill, and talent all play an important role in creating a great photograph, but it is perhaps the most basic, primary element--the photographer’s eye--which is most crucial. In THE EYES OF THE CITY. Richard Sandler not only showcases decades-worth of his strong eye for street photography, but also the eyes of his subjects as he catches them looking into his camera at just the right moment. From 1977 to September 11th 2001, Richard regularly walked through Boston and New York City, encountering all that the streets had to offer, and the results are presented here, many for the first time.

PHOTOGRAPHY/INDIVIDUAL PHOTOGRAPHERS/ MONOGRAPHS Hardcover, 9 x 12 inches, 200 pages ISBN 978-1-57687-787-6 $49.95 US / CAN

Richard Sandler is a street photographer and documentary filmmaker. He has directed and shot eight non-fiction films, including “The Gods of Times Square,” “Brave New York” and “Radioactive City.” Sandler’s still photographs are in the permanent collections of the New York Public Library, the Brooklyn Museum, the New York Historical Society, and the Houston Museum of Fine Art. He was awarded a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship for photography, a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation fellowship for Filmmaking, and a New York State Council on the Arts fellowship also for Filmmaking.

Sandler credits his fascination with street life to his years in New York as a teenager in the 1960s. Young Sandler, a frequent truant, spent much of his time in a very different Times Square than we know today. His quests were to buy illegal fireworks and visit the arcades and side shows, particularly Hubert’s Flea Circus on 42nd Street. Manhattan was was a cyclone of faces: some at play, many clearly suffering. All eyes, ears, and heart, Sandler was sensitive to it all as a kid peering into this adult world. Such early impressions would come to play a significant role in his later street photography. Living in Boston in 1977, and after two careers involved in helping others, as a natural foods chef and acupuncturist, Sandler realized an overwhelming desire to do something for himself, alone. As if on cue, a late 1940s Leica appeared in his life and he hit the Boston streets in an experimental mood. He shot in Boston for three productive years and then moved back home to photograph an edgy, nervous, angry, dangerous New York City. In the 1980s crime and crack were on the rise and their effects were devastating the city. Graffiti exploded onto surfaces everywhere and the Times Square, East Village, and Harlem streets were riddled with drugs, while in midtown the rich wore furs in vast numbers and “greed was good.” In the 1990s the city experienced drastic changes to lure in corporate interests and tourists and the results were directly felt on the streets as rents were raised and several neighborhoods were sanitized, making them ghosts of what, to many, made them formerly exciting. Throughout these turbulent and triumphant years Sandler paced the streets with all his knowledge of what the city was, ever on the lookout for what his eye connected to as it transformed and changed the lives of everyone who lived in it. For better and for worse, one was simply “on the street” in public space, bathing in the comforts, or terrors, of the human sea and Sandler’s work is the marbled evidence of this beauty mixing with decay as only his eyes could capture it.

SNOW BEACH

Snowboarding in the 1990s By Alex Dymond

SNOW BEACH is the definitive book of 90s’ snowboarding: when extreme action met extreme style on the mountain. In the 1990s, snowboarding culture was full of rebellious riders: off-season skateboarders and generation X’s outcasts trying to find their way through early adulthood and adolescence. At the same time, the sport was maturing and growing into the mainstream giant it is today. SNOW BEACH draws on the best photographers of the era to document the lifestyle, fashion, and feats of athleticism that defined the decade.

PHOTOGRAPHY/SPORTS-RECREATION/SNOWBOARDING Hardcover, 9 x 11 inches, 176 pages ISBN 978-1-57687-820-0   $40.00 US/CAN

Alex Dymond is a New York-based clreative director and designer who has worked with the brands Burton, Supreme, Canada Goose, and Stussy, among others. Todd Kohlman is the in-house archivist for snowboard giant, Burton. He lives and works in Burlington, Vermont. Terje Håkonsen is a Norwegian pro-snowboarder. A multiple freestyle snowboard champion, Håkonsen is a multiple winner of the ISF halfpipe competition, US Open halfpipe competition, and European Championship halfpipe competition, and has won many slalom, big air, and style competitions as well. Håkonsen is one of the founders of the World Snowboard tour and still competes and appears in sponsored snowboard videos regularly.

POWERHOUSE FALL/WINTER 2012 POWERHOUSE BOOKS BOOKS  FALL 2016

In these tightly cropped action and lifestyle shots we are treated to pro snowboarders flaunting their outsider status as champions of the “alternative” winter sport. Both in the sport itself and in the clothing on display here, style reigns supreme. The images in SNOW BEACH are of snowboarders with grunge, punk, and hip-hop sensibilities; lingering 80s ski flair mixed with the emerging 90s look pioneered by fledgling apparel brands like Burton and Sims. With about 40 years of history as a seasonal sport, snowboarding has done a sparse job archiving and documenting its own history and there are no definitive books on the subject currently available. Assembled by creative director Alex Dymond and Burton archivist Todd Kohlman, with an introduction by top 90s rider Terje Håkonsen, and with photo contributions from Gary Land, Jeff Curtes, Trevor Graves, Rod Walker, and many more, SNOW BEACH is here to set the record straight.

MADE OF ICELAND A Drink & Draw Book By Reyka

Iceland is a land full of volcanoes, glaciers, geysers and the Northern Lights, and home to a culture of inventive spirits, steeped in art, ingenuity, creativity and a long history of storytelling. Of course, stories aren’t limited to just being told with words. Just as often, stories are told with pictures. In Iceland, there is a tradition called “Drink & Draw,” where bar patrons enjoy a cocktail and draw a sketch based on a particular theme. The sketches are then collected and published in small booklets. Reyka Vodka has produced this book to showcase its homeland through a collection of drawings doodled while enjoying a cocktail, and then photographed by Icelandic photographer Snorri Sturluson. Icelandic culture is celebrated through the drawings and through a look at different elements that are uniquely Icelandic – from the music and art, to the food, folklore and natural beauty that make Iceland, well, Iceland.

TRAVEL-ICELAND/ART-DRAWINGS Hardcover, 8 x 10 inches, 60 pages ISBN 978-1-57687-832-3   $30.00 US/CAN

Reyka Vodka comes from Iceland’s first distillery, located in Borganes, Iceland. Located 74km outside of Reykjavik, this coastal village is removed from industrial life and surrounded by wonderful natural resources. With bountiful, crisp arctic waters and abundant lava rocks that we use to filter our small batch vodka, we can’t help but want to give the world a little taste of what we experience every day. Reyka isn’t just made in Iceland. It’s made of Iceland, with the things that make this island unlike any other place in the world. Learn more about us at ReykaVodka.com. Snorri Sturluson is an Icelandic director and photographer. Snorri began his career documenting the music scene in Iceland in the 80s, and became a producer for several Icelandic music labels. Snorri has lived in New York since 2001 and has helmed numerous high profile advertising campaigns for TV, print, and internet for many of the world’s best known brands as well as directed music videos and other content. Snorri is the author of previous powerHouse book Laundromat (2013).

What started out as a childhood passion for reading has developed into the storytelling and art of BRITTANY R. JACOBS . A self-taught artist and avid traveler, Brittany is influenced by the people and places she explores. Originally from Chicago, she now lives in Philadelphia with her family.
