Sun and Moon
(1962)
Sun and Moon is a wood and metal construction measuring 52 x 39 ins. (133 x 98.5 cms). The work was shown at the New Vision Centre Gallery, London in 1963 in an exhibition entitled Wood Metal and Painted Reliefs which was the first show of Rothenstein’s constructed assemblages. Writing about the latter show Mel Gooding called Rothenstein’s work . . . accomplished relief constructions, combining beaten copper and aluminium panels and found fragments of wooden planking . . . Rothenstein characteristically exploits the intrinsic qualities of the materials for dramatic effect. The dull gleam of the copper, the reflective brightness of the aluminium, the distinctive outlines and textures of the wood, with its accidents of knot and crack: all these features are enlisted into moody adumbrations of landscape overhung by sun and moon.
Sun and Moon is illustrated, p.4, in Mel Gooding’s monograph Michael Rothenstein’s Boxes.

Leonard Rosoman
An email received from Roxanne Rosoman (the artist’s daughter) regarding this picture states: What a stunning picture. This picture came out of a trip that we made in 1976. We crossed the United States by train. We went from Chicago to San Francisco, then from Los Angeles we took the southern route to New Mexico. I can’t say exactly when this was painted but I think that it would be in the late seventies.

George Frederic Watts George Frederic Watts, O.M., R.A. (1817-1904) Perhaps better known as one of the preeminent 19th century British artists, Watts had also studied sculpture precociously as a child and was greatly influenced by seeing the Elgin Marbles in the British Museum. However he only took up sculpture seriously in the late 1860s producing important works such as a marble bust of Clytie (1868) which the critic Richard Jefferies considers ‌ one of the great pieces of Victorian sculpture. During the 1870s Watts learnt the technique of working gesso grosso (plaster of Paris) and all his subsequent monumental sculptures were modelled in gesso. His major sculptures include Physical Energy in Kensington Gardens and the poet Tennyson at Lincoln.
G F Watts use of the pseudonym F. W. George The first documented use by Watts of a pseudonym appears to have been in 1858 when, after some criticism of earlier work, he was persuaded to enter some portraits in the R.A. Summer Exhibition bearing the signature F. W. George. We have been unable to find any other examples of these two sculptures.

Fernand Léger
During the 20th century many of the greatest international artists created posters which were printed as lithographs. Among these were Braque, Chagall, Dufy, Léger, Matisse, Miró and Picasso. Artists would design posters to advertise their own forthcoming

exhibitions or public events such as operas and theatrical productions. In Britain the latter tradition has been carried on by artists such as David Hockney whilst earlier, in the 1930s, commercial posters were designed by, amongst others, Graham Sutherland and John Piper.
