Pablo Picasso Buffon's Histoire Naturelle The suite on offer here is from the rare de tête edition of 36 copies only, printed on chine with additional remarques by Picasso. La Puce (The Flea, opposite) is only found in this edition. Picasso's Buffon is one of the greatest bestiaries of the twentieth century. In his illustrations for Buffon's Histoire Naturelle we encounter the visionary Picasso. He began these etchings in 1936 at the request of the publisher Ambroise Vollard, who sadly did not live to see their completion (he died in a road accident in 1939). Picasso had just met the printer Roger Lacourière, who introduced him to the technique of the li-ground or sugar-li aquatint. Picasso's technical accomplishments cannot be overemphasised. He was eager to test out this new printing method which involves coating a copper plate covered in a ground (an acid resistant protection such as wax or resin) with a sugar-water solution, working the plate with aquatint, and then soaking the plate to dissolve the sugar-water solution through the ground and lighten the surface of the
plate. is technique enables the artist to work in a much wider range of greys rather than the prescriptive black and white of the standard etching. Picasso completed an etching a day. e spontaneity of the plates is attested by the freehand margins, the rapidly drawn line and the use of fingerprints for textural variety. e bestiary was finally published by Martin Fabiani in 1942. Picasso did not sign the etchings, but each edition came with a justification page, a copy of which will accompany your print. 32 original etchings, drypoints and liground aquatints by Picasso published by Martin Fabiani in Paris in 1942 and printed by Roger Lacourière. is de tête edition of 36 only on Chine with remarques. Main edition 226. Paper size is 36 x 27.5 cm. We have one copy only of these prints.
