. . . the best draughtsman in England since William Blake. Richard Hamilton

C O L I N S E L F p a i n t e r, s c u l p t o r & p r i n t m a k e r Born in 1941 Colin Self was educated at Wymondham College in Norfolk and then studied art at Norwich Art School and the Slade School of Fine Art (1961-63). At the Slade he met and was encouraged by Peter Blake and David Hockney and became influenced by Pop Art. During the Cold War period of the1960s he was interested in the self-destructive impulses in human nature as demonstrated by the vast proliferation of nuclear weapons and this was reflected in the prints that he made at the time. Self is an important printmaker and in some respects he redefined the process of etching by inking separate metal plates placed side by side, often printing from found objects or producing unique variants rather than uniform editions of prints. The etchings offered here were immaculately printed for Self by the renowned Maurice Payne. Payne has printed for David Hockney for over forty years. colinselfetchings.com

The Tate holds many of Self’s works in diverse media and, as the art historian David Buckman has indicated, reflects how, since the artist’s return to Norfolk in the 1970s, his interests have been ‌ concerned with landscape, his children,

the art of the past, politics, money and the unemployed, which the artist termed ‘works of fusion’. The late Richard Hamilton called Self the best draughtsman in England since William Blake and, perhaps again indicating the influence of Norfolk, Hamilton added that when Self went through a period painting landscape watercolours, it was … as though Cotman had come to life again. In 1969, after being represented by London’s Robert Fraser Gallery and then by London’s Marlborough Fine Arts Ltd., he decided to separate from dealers altogether and has represented himself since.

Important solo exhibitions have included the Piccadilly Gallery (1964-65), Alecto Gallery (1968), Fermoy Centre (1979), ICA (1986), Tate Gallery (1995-96), Pallant House Gallery (2008) and also in France and Germany.
