SONIA DELAUNAY COMPOSITIONS COLOURS IDEAS Sonia Delaunay (18851979) was born in Russia but moved to Paris in 1905 and married the artist Robert Delaunay in 1910. She was a vibrant woman who played a significant role in the avant-garde of Paris in the 1920s, familiar with all the leading painters and poets of the period. During the 1920s she worked mostly on handprinted fabrics and tapestries; as a designer she made a strong impact on the
international world of fashion, designing creations for Nancy Cunard and Gloria Swanson among others. The 1930s pochoir presented here explore the interaction of colour, the effects of light, and the connection between colour and movement. Examples of her work had a powerful influence on Art Deco geometric patterning and continue to have modernist appeal today although it wasn’t until the 1960s that her vital and characteristic abstract art received the acclaim it had long deserved.

All prices include frame, vat and uk delivery. The pochoir process involves the hand colouring of prints with watercolour or gouache pigments through the medium of stencils. Initially pochoirs were used to illustrate the fashion for Art Nouveau but by the 1920s they were redolent of Art Deco and the Jazz Age in Paris.

The colour on these works is truly remarkable. It has not been printed but was painted on by hand through a large number of stencils using gouache, not printer’s ink. French pochoir at its best.
