Dora Holzhandler A Celebration
goldmark
‘Once the picture is begun it’s just a question of finding it.’ These are the words of the sublime painter Dora Holzhandler and to me they pin down precisely what I love about her. Her paintings are meditations on her past, her present and on the universal themes of love, life and spirituality. They are eternal. Like Mozart, she muses on a theme. Her work is soft, sensual and looks you straight in the face. I treasure my Dora paintings and my pastels. They are the jewels of my small collection. When I paint myself, I try to follow her idea that somehow the work of art already exists and the task ahead is somehow to give it breath, form, shape and life. There are recurring themes of chequered borders, water, children, flowers, all suffused in warm light but never twee or kitsch because they are so full of wit and tenderness. In case you haven’t guessed, I am her greatest fan. Maureen Lipman CBE August 2014
