Amand Durand Master Engraver (1831-1905)

In 1880, Philip Gilbert Hamerton, the great expert on etching published a series of old master etchings. He announced: they are copies etched on copper made by M. Amand Durand’s process of heliogravure, and printed as ordinary etchings. They are of the same size as the originals, which they resemble very closely, and are incomparably superior to poor impressions from the original plates themselves. Amand Durand was born in Paris where he lived and worked for the whole of his life and was widely considered as one of the leading engravers of his time. He became a master engraver early in his career and also developed an abiding interest in Old Master prints of the 15th to 17th centuries. In particular he greatly admired the etchings of Rembrandt and he spent many years searching for the finest first and second state examples. Amand Durand wished to reproduce the etchings and engravings of great artists and, rather than use their original old and worn out printing plates, he developed the heliogravure process of printmaking whereby he etched

copies onto copper plates and printed them as etchings. His resulting prints were greatly superior to images taken from original worn plates and as early as 1872 a writer in the Dutch art journal De Kunstkronijk wrote of them, the fidelity of the reproduction has been carried to an astonishing height. Durand’s etchings were also highly regarded by Theo Van Gogh, the art dealer and brother of the artist Vincent Van Gogh, who in turn became appreciative of Amand Durand’s talent. Today his etchings are to be found in many important public print collections including the Louvre and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.

FRANCESCO PRIMATICCIO

Heliogravure belongs to the same family of intaglio printing techniques as engraving, etching and aquatint. Invented in the early 19th century by Joseph Nicéphore Niepce, the process uses a photochemical procedure for transfering an image to a copper plate. Printed by hand in limited quantities, each print is considered an original, and its value is accordingly assured.
