Terry Frost
In Belgrave Gallery's excellent book on Terry Frost's works on paper Terry Frost: Act & Image, Works on Paper Through Six Decades, published 2000, there are two useful sketches that draw immediate parallels (pages 86 and 93), involving the same crayon technique, colours and ideas. The images here are most likely 1974. The first shows the idea of the half circle outlines evolving into chess pieces, which became a theme of Terry's for a short period of time in the mid 70s. The second is a reworking of an old idea he first had in the early 60s, combining the mooring ropes attached to the prows of fishing boats with the corset strings between two bra cups (it's true!) and the resulting tensions or rhythms as he would call it, between the two shapes. We are indebted for this information to Dominic Kemp, author of the brilliant Terry Frost Prints, Lund Humphreys 2010.

Günter Grass Günter Grass
(b1927)
Günter Grass was born in 1927 of Polish-German parents. After military service and captivity by American forces 1944-46, he worked as a farm labourer and miner and studied art in Düsseldorf and Berlin. Between 1956-59 he made his living as a sculptor, graphic artist and writer in Paris, and subsequently Berlin. In 1955 Grass became a member of the socially critical Gruppe 47, his first poetry was published in 1956 and his first play produced in 1957. Günter Grass has achieved a very rare thing in contemporary arts and letters, earning both critical respect and commercial success in every genre and artistic medium he has taken up. Grass always designs his own book jackets, and his books often contain illustrations by the author. He has been the recipient of numerous literary prizes and medals, including the 1965 Georg Büchner Prize and the Carl von Ossietzky Medal (1977), and is a foreign honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
