Francisco de Goya
Los Proverbios (Proverbs) or Los Disparates (Follies)
Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828) was unflinching in his examination of Spanish society, the Church and the State, all of which came under scrutiny in his works. Los Proverbios, a product of Goya’s old age, are the most difficult of all his etchings to interpret. Goya was over 70-yearsold when he completed the series, almost totally deaf, and living a lonely, solitary life on the outskirts of Madrid. Their mood is not unlike that of his Black Paintings and, like these, they were probably created immediately after his famous Bullfighting series La Tauromaquia, in the years 1819 to 1823. None of the etchings are dated and no edition was printed during the artist’s lifetime. The copperplates are thought to have remained in Madrid after Goya’s death and the first public edition was printed and published by the Spanish Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1864 under the title Los Proverbios. The title appears to have been an attempt to link Goya’s images with popular Spanish proverbs or maxims but the
strangeness and complexity of the pictures means that such interpretations are not always convincing. The series of prints Los Proverbios presents scholars with one of the major conundrums of Goya’s artistic output as for almost two hundred years they have defied attempts to interpret their meaning and the artist’s intentions. One of the greatest printmakers of all time, Goya's talent is matched only by Dürer and Rembrandt. Los Proverbios, his last major printmaking project is considered his best for the virtuosity in engraving, his control of tonalities and his use of aquatint and drypoint. The prints offered here are from the third edition of 100 copies only, published in March 1891 for the Real Academia. Printed on strong, laid paper using black and sepia inks. Dimensions shown are plate sizes.
