It is so exhilarating to have reached this stage in my career where my hands, eyes, mind and materials finally seem to have come together. In the early days it could be hard to go into the studio day after day. Now I am at the happiest stage of my artistic career where I have so many ideas I want to explore that I can’t wait to get in there. My Mum thought she would not live to see me paint people; I have amazed her and myself that they have finally arrived. I was initially inspired by other artists’ interpretations during my New Walk
residency, but now, especially with the sunbathers, I feel they are mine. Trees, landscape and still life are always important sources of inspiration, but I no longer need them in front of me. I find I work better from my stored visual memory, being playful and experimental, pushing myself out of my comfort zone. The sea paintings are very recent; having been painting seascapes for years I finally took a closer look and have been fascinated by what I have seen. Jenny Grevatte, October 2012

I first met Jenny Grevatte over 15 years ago when she had a very successful exhibition at the Cambridge Contemporary Art Gallery. My wife Mary and I were both struck by her beautiful use of colour and the way she managed to produce a whole range of surface effects. Close examination showed this is achieved by the use of collage and printing techniques combined with conventional painting. The overall result is magical. The more I looked at her still-life pictures the more I realised that she had an eye for arranging objects in unusual positions and then enhancing the quirky effect by introducing a very subtle false perspective. Equally with her landscapes, Jenny manages to produce paintings that at first glance look representational; but again one is quick to admire the thoughtful composition attained through her careful juxtaposition of unusual aspects. Shortly afterwards when we were thinking of commissioning an artist to paint a picture of Christ’s College, less conventional than the usual Kipp view, we both felt we should approach Jenny to see if she was interested. Happily she
was and she came to the College on several cold days, sat quietly in corners and sketched the various views she had selected. We were not disappointed. She had managed to recognise alternative viewpoints of the College which led to very interesting and evocative pictures. Since then we have eagerly followed her career and were delighted when she was awarded an artist residency at the New Walk Museum in Leicester. Here she had the run of the Museum’s reserve collection taking inspiration from certain pictures and developing them to create something completely new. She deliberately chose to look at artists who worked with the figure and faces as she felt the absence of these subjects in her own work. This has now paid off with series of crowds, heads and, most recently, sunbathers, bringing a new richness to her body of work. We find her work very exciting and watch her continuing development with great interest and pleasure. Dr Alan Munro Master of Christ's College, Cambridge (1995–2002)
