Dora Holzhandler Described by art critic Eric Newton as a temperamental primitive, Dora Holzhandler is one of the century’s most original artists.
Born in Paris in 1928 to Polish Jewish refugee parents, Holzhandler has lived mostly in London since the age of six. She is married to George Swinford and they have three daughters.
Holzhandler discovered Buddhism in the early 1950s, but is also a student of the Jewish Kabbalah. These twin mystical interests have served to confirm her open and celebratory view of existence, even where events bring tragedy and sadness. Holzhandler’s richly decorative paintings of everyday life, often specifically Jewish, are reminiscent of
Polish folk art, Indian and Persian miniatures and Roman mosaics. She chooses subjects that are strikingly diverse: a family at the aquarium; a Rabbi teaching; Guignol in Paris, girls bathing.
Inspired by Allen Ginsberg’s poetry, Jack Kerouac’s Buddhist-Catholic novels, Aldous Huxley’s study of visionary perception and LSD-transfigured ways of seeing, and essays on the mystical path by a Catholic monk, Dora Holzhandler draws no distinction between the sacred and the mundane.
All of Dora Holzhandler’s paintings possess
an ineffable tenderness, they make us recall
our childhoods, our myths, our roots. They
are little expanses of sweetness and peace.

For Dora Holzhandler
life often seems to be
a dance. Or a feast.
