Dora Holzhandlerʼs beautiful pictures of lovers, family groups, solitary contemplatives, people at home and in the marketplace, are at once movingly intimate and universal in feeling. A mystical note resounds in her vibrant portrayals of lovers emparadised in each otherʼs arms in opulently patterned bedrooms, of mothers and children in Eden‑like gardens, of families endearingly observed as they gather in celebratory attitude, and in ethereal, luminous images that capture everyday life with spontaneous joy and clarity. Dora was born in Paris in 1928. Many of her pictures are inspired by childhood memories – being fostered in her early years by an
affectionate Catholic farming family in Normandy until she was about five, her return to live with her poor, extended Jewish family in Belleville in Paris, and then the move in 1934 to live in Londonʼs East End. Her Eastern European familial roots, and her French origins, permeate her paintingsʼ atmosphere to this day. She studied at the Anglo‑French Art School in London from 1948 to 1950, where her fresh, pristine approach to art – what a critic has called ʻsome sort of divine innocenceʼ – was recognised, and she was left alone to follow her own path. She now lives in Londonʼs Holland Park. Philip Vann, 2011 author of Dora Holzhandler, 1997 and several books on modern British artists.

ʻAll of Dora Holzhandlerʼs paintings possess an ineffable tenderness, they make us recall our childhoods, our myths, our roots, and if we have severed from these things, they make us long for them in a palpable way. They are little expanses of sweetness and peace. Dora is that rare thing – a mother and child in one, as an artist she captures the apparent simplicity of life and infuses it with a depth I find eerie.ʼ Edna OʼBrien
