In 1987 Goldmark Gallery was the sole sponsor for Creffield’s South Bank Centre touring exhibition English Cathedrals. At that time Creffield made a show specifically for the gallery entitled A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This wonderful portrait of the bard was one of the highlights of that show.

William Crozier Crozier was born in Glasgow to Irish parents and educated at the Glasgow School of Art between 1949 and 1953. On graduating he spent time in Paris and Dublin before settling in London, where he quickly gained a reputation as the 1950s equivalent of a Young British Artist through the early success and notoriety of his exhibitions of assemblages and paintings. Crozier spent 1963 in southern Spain with the Irish poet Anthony Cronin – a year which proved pivotal to his development as an artist and one of the most prolific periods of his working life. These paintings show Crozier’s creative response to his new surroundings; his luminous colour spectrum matching the heat and light of the Mediterranean, while the sinewy black lines are abstractions of the Andalusian vines. The Surrealist Conroy Maddox praised Crozier for achieving the tension between the image as it relates to nature and the formal construction that holds it in solution. The result is a sense of emotional intensity in the landscape – a characteristic which runs through Crozier’s work. His paintings can be seen in many major public and private collections in the British Isles and around the world. This is a rare opportunity to buy these significant works at such good value.

Ernest Waldron West
Ernest Waldron West (1904-1994) Little is known of Waldron West’s background but he was born and brought up in Worcester and probably attended the School of Art at Pierpoint Street in the city. He is known to have lived in the village of Knightwick in the west of the county and by the 1930s he was working from a studio at Sansome Street in Worcester which he retained for many years. In the 1980s West moved to live at East Grinstead in Sussex and also set up a studio there. Although he painted landscapes and still lifes he is best known for his portraits, often of civic dignitaries such as the mayors and aldermen of Worcester. Some of his better known sitters included the record breaking aviatrix Sheila Scott (1969), the Liberal M.P. Cyril Smith (1975) and several portraits of the artist Sir Frank Brangwyn. Although there seems to be no evidence that West was Brangwyn’s assistant he probably studied with him and was obviously inspired by him, making copies of his work and sometimes painting in the style of Brangwyn, as in this portrait. At St. Mary’s Convent in Worcester West painted a depiction of the Last Supper and it is believed he took over the commission from Brangwyn, the mural is certainly based upon the latter’s work at St. Joseph’s, Stokesley, North Yorkshire.

Patrick Caulfield
This is only the second print the artist produced, after Ruins of 1964 had been published in the ICA portfolio of the same year. Red and White Still Life is therefore to be considered the first separately issued print the artist produced in what was
to become a long and illustrious career of printmaking. Furthermore, since only a handful of these prints were sold during the exhibition and of those that remained many were damaged beyond repair in the gallery’s storage, it is therefore

Richard Hamilton
Richard Hamilton (1922-2011) is widely recognised as having introduced Pop Art into Britain. He described the movement as popular, transient, expendable, low cost, mass produced, young, witty, sexy, gimmicky, glamorous and big business. He has made art prints throughout his career, some 170 prints by 1991.

Kent State was issued in an edition of 5000 copies and printed by Dietz Offizia, Lengmoos, Bavaria on Schoeller Durex paper. The image depicts a fallen student from Kent State University during a confrontation with the National Guard during a demonstration against the Vietnam War in May 1970. Hamilton took his basic image from a photograph of a television news film which he then modified by a complex series of multiple screen printing processes.

George Chapman
Although numbered out of 100 we know that Chapman printed his etchings to order, the one offered here, being number 3. We are certain that the edition was never
completed and from its scarcity, believe that it is unlikely that more than a small handful of this etching was ever produced.

Following this period he developed an original style, strongly influenced by primitive arts. This print was made at the Curwen Studio.
