JEAN COCTEAU | 1
Provenance: Tristan Tzara. Tzara was the founder, in 1916 in Zurich, of the then avant-garde Dada movement. He wrote to Cocteau thinking him a possible valuable contributor to the new movement. Cocteau was later prevented from collaboration with the Dadaists for being too flippant to be taken seriously. Provenance: Albemarle Gallery and Michael Parkin Gallery labels on reverse. This is a rare opportunity to purchase an early Cocteau drawing.

4 | CONTEMPORARY LITHOGRAPHS
Contemporary Lithographs Ltd (1937-8) was a pioneering scheme set up by John Piper and Robert Wellington, who had helped make Zwemmer's the centre for modern art in the 1930s. Their aim was to bring good representative art to the people by producing quality prints at reasonable prices and to take real art into schools across Britain. Together they commissioned and produced two series of prints, with in some cases Piper taking on the task of coaching artists who were not familiar with the auto-lithographic process. They involved many of the Zwemmer artists, as well as their own friends: Edward Bawden,
the Nash brothers, Eric Ravilious, Graham Sutherland and John Piper himself. In principle, the prints were to be sold, on subscription, to schools in an unlimited edition. In practice, the publishers were so anxious that Curwen’s machine minders should not get bored, that the edition was actually limited to 400 copies. The following year, a second series aimed at ‘households with small incomes’ was published. It is extremely rare to find signed copies of any of these prints.
