Wassily Kandinsky, born in Moscow in 1866, is universally acknowledged as the founder of abstraction and the father of modern art. His move into pure abstraction took place between 1907 and 1912 when he made Klänge, a suite of some 50 woodcuts. Kandinsky viewed abstraction as an escape from the world of things or as he described it: the soulless material life. He quickly became highly influential throughout Europe. After the Second World War Aimé and Marguerite Maeght, owners of the Galerie Maeght in Paris, issued limited edition lithographs by many of the major artists of the time. Although Kandinsky had died in 1944, Maeght editioned several lithographs after original works by him. Printed by the renowned firm of Mourlot Frères in Paris, they were initialled and dated in the plate with a numbered limitation in pencil.

The four lithographs offered here were commissioned by Maeght and printed in Paris by the great French lithographers Mourlot Frères. They are interpretations of earlier paintings by Kandinsky. Each is initialled and dated in the plate with an edition number in pencil. We have a very small number of each lithograph.
