R B KITAJ SCREENPRINTS
goldmark exhibition 2013
R B KITAJ, 1978, © Jesse A. Fernández
A new catalogue raisonné of Kitaj’s graphic work has just been published. We are delighted to include a complimentary copy with each print purchased.
R B KITAJ Painter and printer of equal import, American born R. B. Kitaj emerged as one of the most influential artists of his generation and the renewed interest surrounding his name bears testament to his substantial accomplishments. Emigrating to England in the late 1950s, Kitaj’s attraction to printmaking was sparked as a student and in 1962 he was introduced to the commercial screenprinter Chris Prater, with whom he would enjoy a long relationship and produce his finest body of prints. A self-confessed bibliophile, books (alongside his Jewish heritage) frequently provided the impetus for Kitaj’s work, culminating in two major screenprint suites ‘In Our Time’ (printed by Prater) and ‘A Day Book’, produced from 196972, amongst many others. Noted for their ability to crystallise a moment in time, documenting both social change and the change within his own life, Kitaj’s prints are justly receiving greater and greater attention to add to their already considerable critical acclaim.

Kitaj told Kinsman that this series was inspired by Walter Benjamin’s 1931 essay Unpacking My Library: a Talk About Book Collecting, which
considers the book as an object to be valued and loved.
R B Kitaj was one of the most significant painters of the second half of the 20th Century. With his friends, Bacon, Auerbach and Freud, he pioneered new figurative art, in the face of the trend towards abstraction and the conceptual. It is now nearly 20 years since the last major
Kitaj exhibition at the Tate. His work is currently on show at Pallant House, the Jewish Museum and the British Museum; the latter with a substantial number of prints. Many of these are offered for sale in the current Goldmark exhibition.
A new catalogue raisonné of Kitaj’s graphic work has just been published. We are delighted to include a complimentary copy with each print purchased.
