Lithographies o r i g i na L e s Lithography was invented by alois senefelder at the end of the 18th century. Born in prague in 1771, senefelder discovered the process when he was 24. he found that if he made a mark with a greasy chalk on a at stone, then wetted the stone with water, the grease would repel the water. When he then applied ink to the stone, the water would repel the ink which now sat precisely where the original marks had been made. the image could then be transferred to paper. Within 20 years of the discovery, artists all over europe and america were making lithographs.
A substantial number of these lithographs were destroyed by bombing in 1945, making them extremely scarce.
