Graham Sutherland

7. Rock Form II watercolour, pen, ink and pencil, c1970, 17 x 28.5 cm,

ÂŁ6000

Graham Sutherland (1903-1980). In his work Sutherland developed an interest in natural forms of growth such as tree roots and thorn bushes which he often depicted in 'close-up' or from foreshortened viewpoints. These organic growth formations, which remained central to Sutherland's work throughout his career, often appeared ambiguous with their hints of human or animal-like characteristics.

Jean-Pierre Cassigneul

Following in the tradition of the early 20th century French artists, Bonnard and Vuillard, Jean-Pierre Cassigneul created beautiful compositions with great appeal. Born in Paris in 1935, he studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and held his first one-man exhibition there at the age of 17. Since then, his work has been exhibited extensively throughout Europe, Japan and the United States. He made his first lithographs in 1965 and has continued exploring the process ever since.

In 1972 the outstanding bird painter Charles Tunnicliffe RA carried out some experimental drawing on lithographic plates for a proposed book on falconry. Because of the prohibitively high costs, the book as it was envisaged, with original prints for illustrations, was never published. The prints sold well but a few folders of work lay forgotten for decades. Charles Tunnicliffe RA, 1901-1979, has been described as ‘arguably one of the greatest bird painters of all time’ and his watercolours regularly featured in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions. He also illustrated many well known books, including Tarka the Otter. All his work reflected his devotion to country life and his magnificent bird studies derived from many years of passionate observation.

Joe Tilson

Tilson was born in London in 1928. He studied at St Martin’s and the Royal College of Art, where he won the Knapping and Rome prizes. He has made several appearances at the Venice Biennale and has had a successful international career. He became associated with the Royal College’s generation of Pop Artists, but was always prepared to experiment with novel subjects, often stemming from his eclectic reading. Sex, birth and death are recurring themes in Tilson’s work and he uses striking vibrant colours, sometimes combining a single image with text. Elected RA in 1991.

David Hockney The Cavafy Suite

49. Portrait of Cavafy in Alexandria, signed £2250 unsigned £600

David Hockney first discovered the Greek poet C.P. Cavafy while a student at the Royal College of Art in the early 1960s. The Cavafy prints are not literal illustrations of the poems but visualizations of their nostalgia for fleeting but memorable sexual encounters. The feeling of authenticity generated by the images is due to Hockney's own personal

experiences. They were instantly acclaimed. Edward Lucie-Smith spoke of their 'staggering virtuosity' and described them as 'not only the best work I have seen by the artist but probably the finest prints produced in England since the war'. The Arts Council made a film about the creation of the engravings entitled Love's Presentation.
