claude flight

Born in London in 1881, Walter Claude Flight was the most influential figure in the development of the colour linocut as a key element of the Modernist aesthetic.

He had tried various careers – including engineering and beekeeping – before he entered Heatherley’s School of Fine Art in 1913. Although his time at Heatherley’s was cut short by the outbreak of WWI, the relationships he forged there were crucial to the development of Flight’s art. One notable fellow-student was C. R. W. Nevinson, who introduced Flight to the work of the Futurists.

Flight founded the Grosvenor School of Modern Art in London with Iain MacNab, Cyril Power and Sybil Andrews, and taught there from 1926-1930. After that, he taught informally at summer schools in his neolithic chalk cave at Chantemesle on the banks of the Seine, which he had bought while serving in France in WWI. S. C. Kaines-Smith called Flight ‘the only true futurist that this country has produced’.

chris wood

Inspired by early Roman paintings on copper, Wood has for sometime been working on etched zinc. The process involves creating an indelible image on the surface of the metal before the whole plate is covered by several carefully applied layers of black gesso. By rubbing back the gesso episodes from the original, images are revealed and act as a trigger for the subsequent oil painted images which follow. The paintings become objects, tableaux replete with mystery and hidden meanings.

Born in Leeds in 1961, Christopher P. Wood is a painter and printmaker of atmospheric and enigmatic imagery. He gained a master’s degree in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art in 1986 and has consistently had successful exhibitions in the UK and abroad. His work is held in numerous public and private collections. Wood has recently been shortlisted for the 'Newlight' painting prize.

brendan neiland

Brendan Neiland, born in 1941, is a British artist and Professor of Art best known for his architectural paintings and his depictions of building reflections which make use of a distinctive spray-gun technique originally developed at the Royal College of Art. His work has garnered him a great reputation amongst British painters and printmakers and he was elected Royal Academician in 1992.

As well as regularly producing work and exhibiting, Neiland has also taught art and is accredited with the recovery of the struggling Royal Academy Schools, where he was appointed Director in 1998. Despite controversy surrounding his resignation from the post (and expulsion from the Academy, prompting the resignation of fellow academician Peter Blake) he is greatly admired for his teaching work and paintings alike.

Neiland worked on a series of car bonnet reflections in the 1970s and this painting originally hung in the Board Room of Mazda cars.

A current exhibition of later and smaller work by Neiland has paintings between £5k and £12k. This, at £5k, represents fantastic value.
