Michael Rothenstein Born into an influential artistic family in London Michael Rothenstein was the son of the artist Sir William Rothenstein and his brother John became Director of the Tate Gallery. Initially he studied art at the Chelsea Polytechnic followed by the Central School of Arts, 1924-27. In 1948 Rothenstein commenced printmaking, producing lithographs and monotypes, but four years later a profound change in his artistic style work started to evolve after he attended the avant-garde Atelier 17 print studio in Paris run by Stanley Hayter. Rothenstein later said of the experience, . . . it absolutely changed my life . . . it was all happening against the backdrop of what Picasso was doing and what Braque and Matisse were doing, so it was heady stuff. To me it was an absolute revelation . . . it was a most marvellous thing. In entering this glittering world I felt I could discern huge tracts of untried country. His work is held by many important public collections including the Tate Gallery, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the British Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Rothenstein was elected a Royal Academician in 1983. The art critic Robin Garton has said of Rothenstein’s work, his creative imagination and the development of relief prints, especially in the direct use of found materials, have been internationally recognised, and have won him a string of international prizes. Further praise came from Bryan Robinson who wrote, Rothenstein gave to British art a particular liveliness and joie de vivre, a relish for the physical world and a sensual flair for colour and texture in both paintings and prints.

Michael Rothenstein

Sun and Moon

(1962)

Sun and Moon is a wood and metal construction measuring 52 x 39 ins. (133 x 98.5 cms). The work was shown at the New Vision Centre Gallery, London in 1963 in an exhibition entitled Wood Metal and Painted Reliefs which was the first show of Rothenstein’s constructed assemblages. Writing about the latter show Mel Gooding called Rothenstein’s work . . . accomplished relief constructions, combining beaten copper and aluminium panels and found fragments of wooden planking . . . Rothenstein characteristically exploits the intrinsic qualities of the materials for dramatic effect. The dull gleam of the copper, the reflective brightness of the aluminium, the distinctive outlines and textures of the wood, with its accidents of knot and crack: all these features are enlisted into moody adumbrations of landscape overhung by sun and moon.

Sun and Moon is illustrated, p.4, in Mel Gooding’s monograph Michael Rothenstein’s Boxes.

Joe Tilson

The title refers to Demeter the classical Greek goddess of the harvest, the fertility of the earth, the seasons, fecundity etc. Tilson spells out her name DEMETRA on the canvas employing letters of the ancient Greek alphabet and depicts at least two other of her symbols, three ears of wheat and a torch. Tilson working in his studio at Christian Malford

Born in London in 1928. He studied at St. Martin’s School of Art, where fellow students included Kossoff and Auerbach, followed by the Royal College of Art with Peter Blake. He won the Rome Prize in 1955 and from the early 1960s became closely associated with the British Pop Art movement when his work often involved the use of bold colours and schematized, emblematic imagery sometimes combined with grids as a structural device. These elements have occur in the work on offer here Demeter (1990).

He has won several more prestigious awards including the Gulbenkian Foundation Prize (1960). He has had major retrospectives in Vancouver (1979), Bristol (1984) and the Royal Academy (Tilson:Pop to Present, 2002). In 1991 he was elected a Royal Academician and his work is held by many important public collections.

Olive Wootton Olive Wootton was born in Lewisham and went on to study at Goldsmith’s College of Art where she graduated with first class honours. In 1953 she entered the Royal College of Art where her tutors included the renowned sculptor John Skeaping and two years later she was represented in the Young Contemporaries exhibition in London. Although Wootton has exhibited throughout her life, it is since the untimely death of her painter husband, Gordon, that she has returned to sculpture with renewed energy. She has exhibited with a number of galleries, societies and selected groups and has enjoyed considerable success with individual shows in Britain and overseas. In 1992 she was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and in recent years has shown at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions. She lives and works at her studio in an attractive area of rural Northamptonshire and her work is represented in many public and private collections. The artist Fred Cuming R.A. has described Olive Wootton as being . . . the master of her medium. This mastery requires years of dedication, a strong will and the discipline to put in the hours of work. She has acquired the techniques and now her ideas and visions are in full flow.

Olive Wootton

Metamorphosis of Daphne Daphne was a river nymph in Greek mythology, being the daughter of Peneus. She was the first and most celebrated of all Apollo’s loves, but his attentions were not reciprocated. He pursued her and she fled praying to Mother Earth to save her – whereupon branches sprouted from her arms and roots from her feet. She was transformed into a laurel tree. To console himself Apollo made a laurel crown.

Andy Warhol

Inspired by the work of Andy Warhol, The Souper Dress was created in the 1960s by Campbell’s Soup for an advertising campaign. Paper dresses were fashionable at the time and this is a classic example of fashion, art and industry intersecting in one image. We know of one example making an outrageous £24,000 at auction and last year a number sold at between £10,000 and £15,000. Most that have sold for less money have been in very bad condition. Ours is near mint and we are pleased to offer it at £4750. The label reads: No Cleaning - No Washing - It's Carefree Fire Resistant Unless Washed or Cleaned To Refreshen, Press Lightly with Warm Iron. 80% Cellulose, 20% Cotton The dress is in The Metropolitan Museum of Art collection, the Andy Warhol Museum, FIT, as well as other museums and collections around the world.

Cultural Ties was a scheme devised and brought to fruition between 1998 and 2000 by the independent arts curator Kapil Jariwala. Eighty artists from all over the world agreed to design ties for the scheme. The ties were produced in signed, limited editions of 300 each by the Italian firm of Ratti based at Como employing a variety of fabrics such as silk, linen, velvet and taffeta.

Christo

At sunrise, on October 9, 1991, Christo and Jeanne-Claude's 1880 workers began to open the 3100 umbrellas in Ibaraki and California, in the presence of the artists at both sites. This Japan-USA temporary

work of art reflected the similarities and differences in the ways of life and the use of the land in two inland valleys, one 12 miles long in Japan, and the other 18 miles long in the USA.
