Lucien Simon

Born in Paris, Simon (1861-1945) studied principally at the Académie Julian, 1880-83, one of his tutors being William Adolphe Bouguereau. He quickly established his reputation as he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1891 and also at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. In 1895 he met the artist Charles Cottet and joined his Bande Noire or Nubians who often painted in an Impressionist style but employing darker tones. Cottet painted a portrait of Simon (1907) which is in the Musée d’Orsay, Paris. Throughout the 1890s Simon won several art prizes culminating in a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1900 and he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur in the same year. Simon specialised in painting traditional provincial scenes, particularly of peasant life and scenery in Brittany where his wife Jeanne Dauchez came from. He also painted scenes with figures, fine portraits, genre scenes, and seascapes. He taught at various art schools including the Académie Colarossi and then the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts where he was elected to its Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1929. Eight years later Simon won First Prize at the Exposition Universelle de Paris for his work on the Luxembourg pavilion. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1931-34.

Eduardo Paolozzi

‘The object was exciting to me as a sculptor. In one sense, what could be more organic than an Elephant? (Or the idea of an Elephant?) To interpret this into completely non-organic shapes, practically all geometric elements with an emphasis on the horizontal and vertical planes, was a fascinating problem.’ Eduardo Paolozzi, Dec 1972 In 1972 Paolozzi was commissioned by design group Douglas Maxwell Ltd to work on a product promotion for Nairn Floors Ltd. Having just seen Paolozzi's retrospective exhibition at the Tate, Maxwell was confident that the artist’s fascination for industrial objects would tie in perfectly with the project. The brief was to design a sculptural container with a removable lid enclosing a compartment for brochures on Nairn products. The result was ‘The Elephant’, 3,000 of which were produced and each numbered and signed by Paolozzi. A description of the ‘Making of the Elephant’ is also included in the literature held inside the object.

Scottie Wilson Scottie Wilson (born Louis Freeman in 1888) was one of the most celebrated Outsider artists of the 20th century, known particularly for his highly decorative paintings. He ran away from his home in Glasgow at the age of 16 and joined the military, serving in India, South Africa and on the Western Front in WW1. After the war he immigrated to Canada where he ran a second-hand junk shop, discovering his passion for art only at the age of 44. Picking up a fountain pen one day he began to doodle on the cardboard table top in his shop, stating: ‘In a couple of days – I worked almost ceaselessly – the whole of the table top was covered with little faces and designs. The pen seemed to make me draw, and them images, the faces and designs just flowed out. I couldn’t stop – I’ve never stopped since that day.’ After receiving recognition for his work in Toronto, Wilson relocated to London in 1945 and had his first one-man exhibition at the Arcade Gallery that same year. Further exhibitions followed in Paris, Switzerland and New York and his work became coveted by the likes of Picasso and Jean Dubuffet – great champions of Outsider art. His stylised imagery incorporates birds, fishes, flowers and totem heads – the latter of which he encountered in Vancouver. Though his work often invites symbolic interpretation, Wilson himself rejected any academic analysis, claiming his work was born out of his imagination and internal visualisations.

Swoon

Swoon (real name, Caledonia Curry) is one of America’s leading urban artists. She studied painting at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and inspired by her surroundings began to put up posters and stickers on city walls and billboards. She specialises in life-size wheatpaste prints and paper cutouts of ordinary people that she observes in her everyday life. By pasting them onto the walls of the city Swoon seeks to highlight the human element of urban living. Swoon often collaborates with other artists and activists on projects that reflect her strong social consciousness. In 2010 she began working on Konbit Shelter – a sustainable building project that aims to create homes and community spaces in postearthquake Haiti. The year before, Swoon and a crew of 30 artists and performers gate-crashed the Venice Biennale on rafts made out of New York City garbage. In December 2011 Swoon held her first solo exhibition in London, filling the gallery at Black Rat Projects with sculptures and paper cuts. She often prints at the Goldmark Atelier when in England.

Jago

Among the crowds spilling out into New York's Times Square to celebrate V-J Day in 1945 was a young nurse named Edith Shain. As she ran into the street she was grabbed by a sailor for an enthusiastic kiss, providing photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt with one of the most iconic pictures of the 20th Century. Here, the 27-year-old nurse featured in the original photo has been replaced by the no less iconic image of Mrs Marge Simpson. Observing the clinch in the background is her husband Homer. The identity of the artist remains an enigma.
