John Piper 20. Rooftops, Chambord Gessoed canvas on board Painted in oil with sgraffito 145 x 244.5 cm (57 x 96 inches) 1971, signed bottom right

£59,500

Piper first painted the famous Château de Chambord in 1971, the year he visited Venice to make designs for Benjamin Britten's opera Death in Venice. The roof pavilions at Chambord corresponded to Piper’s original designs for Death in Venice which used a group of tall revolving structures. A smaller painting Chambord Rooftops II was exhibited in the Tate Gallery’s 1983 Piper Retrospective and Piper later produced a similar image as one of his largest screenprints.

The royal Château de Chambord at Loir-et-Cher is one of the most recognisable châteaux in the world. Constructed as a hunting lodge for King François I, its distinct Renaissance architecture blends traditional French medieval forms with classical Italian structures.

Born in Nantes, Barbier (1882-1932) held his first exhibition in 1911 and eventually established himself as a leading figure in Paris as a designer of theatre and cinema costumes, book illustration and haute couture fashion design and illustration. His better known work includes costumes for Rudolph Valentino in the film Monsieur Beaucaire and designs and sets at the Folies-Bergère.

Easily the most sought-after of all of the early French pochoir artists.

Barbier’s illustrations from the 1920s are widely considered to epitomise the spirit of Art Deco and Jazz Age Paris with their combination of diverse influences such a Orientalism, Aubrey Beardsley, classical Greek vase decorations and 18th century French paintings. Barbier usually employed the pochoir process which involved the hand colouring of prints with watercolour pigments through the medium of stencils.

Marcel Duchamp was one of the most diverse, intriguing and prolific of artists, and the true Godfather of Dada. Whilst much of his famous output is readily known - the editions of his Boîte Verte or Green Box, 1934, a facsimile publication of notes he compiled for his masterwork, The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even, and his Boîte-en-valise, (Duchamp’s famous portable museum in a suitcase), it is his graphic work that remains less readily available.

Ian Wilkinson

Born 1924 in the New York borough of Queens, Murray Wachs was better known as Bingo Gazingo. Although he wrote and performed music and poetry for much of his life Gazingo was a postal worker in New York and he remained in obscurity until his later years. Gazingo appeared every Monday night at the Bowery Poetry Club in New York and actually died in 2010 as a result of being knocked down by a taxi on his way to perform there. His poetry often used crude but hilarious language and perhaps a flavour of this can be gained from two of his titles, namely Up Your Jurassic Park and I Love You So Fucking Much I Can’t Shit. He also wrote poetic odes to celebrities such as Madonna, Tupac Shakur and Beavis and Butthead. His best known album, Bingo Gazingo, consists of the poet reading his poems to an improvised musical accompaniment. Gazingo’s work, Everything’s O.K. at the O.K. Corral, was issued on a 1996 CD produced by the Greenwich Village coffee house Fast Folk Café.
