John Piper
1. Garn Fawr lithograph, 1981, ed 75, signed, 38.5 x 53.5 cm,
ÂŁ1850
John Piper first came to know Pembrokeshire in the 1930s through his wife Myfanwy but it was only in 1962 that they acquired Garn Fawr Cottage near Strumble Head. The cottage derives its name from the craggy rock outcrop beneath which it nestles and the single storey structure is built from local stone and roofed with Welsh slate. Piper used the cottage as a retreat and studio and usually returned there several times each year painting and drawing Garn Fawr and the surrounding landscape on many occasions.

John Piper
The Garn Fawr Collage
Collage was an important constituent in Piper’s art and relating to his work in the early 1960s David Fraser Jenkins has written, in the collages … the drawing and colour lie in the angular and circular shapes of the cut papers, which are more rhythmical than in the pre-war collages, but are similarly on the surface … [this style] was extended further in abstract landscapes, that is abstract paintings taken from a landscape composition and so titled. These have remained one of the extremes of his style, but the application with separate black lines and colours, like Garn Fawr was not continued beyond 1963. (Tate Gallery catalogue, 1983)

This abstract image of Garn Fawr, in gouache and ink, is an interesting example of Piper’s use of the collage technique where, in this instance, he has stuck coloured paper cutouts onto the main background sheet of paper. The collage is not dated but was probably painted around 1962/63 as it bears distinct similarities to Piper’s important oil painting of Garn Fawr (1962) which was included in his major retrospective exhibition at the Tate Gallery in 1983. It is of course possible that Piper used the collage Garn Fawr in order to work out ideas for the oil painting.

Frost is notable for his use of primary colours and of shapes reflecting Cornish marine life, its bobbing boats and heaving water. Exhibited widely internationally with major retrospectives at RA and Tate St Ives. Elected RA in 1992 and was knighted in 1998.

4. Church and Houses, Swansea £6000
oil on board, c1958, 37 x 80.5 cm,
This painting is part of Chapman’s peripheral vision series where figures in the foreground are painted as if they were being glimpsed in one’s peripheral vision.
George Chapman, 1908-1993, born in London, studied at Royal College of Art and Slade School of Art. After this he moved to Great Bardfield in Essex but found little to inspire him until his first visit to Wales in the 1950s. His love affair with the soulful landscape and communities of the Welsh valleys saw him eventually move across the border in 1960 (shortly after winning the Gold Medal for Fine Art at the National Eisteddfod in 1957). Influenced by Sickert and the Euston Road School of painters, he was the subject of a BBC Monitor programme in 1961. His work is held in many public collections including the V&A Museum.

Jacob Epstein
Jacob Epstein (1880-1959). Recognised by many of his peers and art historians as one of the great sculptors of the 20th century, whose prices, as yet, do not reflect his status.
Lady Kathleen Epstein (née Garman, 1901 – 1979) was the third of seven sisters, high profile members of artistic circles in midtwentieth century London, renowned for their beauty and scandalousness. She was the muse and long-time mistress of Epstein, and finally his second wife. They met in 1921 and immediately began a relationship that lasted until Epstein's death and produced three of Epstein's five children, Theo, Kitty and Esther. It has a sultry summer afternoon quality…Lips parted, eyes half closed, Kathleen basks sensuously, full of honey. Evelyn Silber
14. Second Portrait of Kathleen bronze, 1922, signed, 39 cm high,
£22,500
16
There will be a major showing of Epstein’s sculpture at the Royal Academy from this October, when his work will sit alongside that of Eric Gill and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska.
Jacob Epstein
From about 1910 to 1930 Jacob Epstein was the best artist working in England, and he defended most nobly the repeated assaults of philistinism. He started as a master of style; he ended as a master of truth. Looking back on his work it is incredible that he was once insulted and abused. Lord Clarke.
In the Girl from Baku Epstein found something of that ‘Nefertiti look’ he had descried in Dolores, in Kathleen and in Isobel. He modelled her with head held high, conscious of her beauty, a torrent of hair falling behind her shoulders: the naked torso, with arms at her sides, is cut off just above the navel. Evelyn Silber
