Francis Bacon Francis Bacon (1909-1992) began exhibiting in London commercial galleries in the 1930s, but it was not until his Three Studies for Figures at the Base of the Crucifixion was exhibited at the London Tate in 1945 that he began to be recognised as one of the most influential and controversial British painters of the 20th century. From the 1950s, Bacon's work was shown in numerous exhibitions in Europe and the USA and won him an international reputation as one of the giants of contemporary art. The emotional impact of Bacon's work depends not only on his imagery - characteristically single figures in isolation and despair - but also on his handling of his materials, by means of which he smudged and twisted faces and bodies into illdefined creatures. Lithographs and etchings, after the paintings of Bacon, were produced from the late 1960s by craftsmen printers in France and Spain in the tradition of Villon's prints of Picasso and Braque works, and Sorlier's lithographs after Chagall. The proofs were all approved and the prints signed by Bacon.
