I

n 1956 the New York Graphic Club issued a suite of fine art prints entitled Picasso Femmes & Faunes after original drawings, washes and watercolours by Picasso which he had produced between 1946-56. It should be noted that Picasso himself was directly involved with the project as he personally designed and drew the portfolio which contains the loose images comprising Femmes & Faunes. The faun or satyr (a half man/half goat with a lustful disposition) was a regular figure in Picasso’s work, sometimes appearing in the guise of the mythical figure of Pan but often as a substitute for the artist himself. It is interesting to note that the decade covered by the Femmes & Faunes images coincides with the peak period of the relationship between Picasso and Francoise Gilot when she was often portrayed as the woman/nymph to his faun/satyr figure.

The couple had moved to live near the coast in the south of France and Picasso is on record as saying, it is strange, in Paris I never draw fauns, centaurs, or mythical heroes … they always seem to live in these parts.

T

he printmaking of Femmes & Faunes was entrusted to Daniel Jacomet of Paris employing his own unique reproduction process (further information below). All but two of the images are signed in the plate by Picasso. The authorisation given by Picasso to the prints is further demonstrated by the fact that the paper of each print is impressed with a watermark reading, Ceci est une reproduction Picasso together with Picasso’s signature. Additionally there are further watermarks giving the name of the papermaker, Richard de Bas and his symbol.

DANIEL JACOMET

WATERMARK

A

t the age of fourteen Daniel Jacomet was apprenticed to the renowned Parisian printer and publisher Andre Marty who was a friend of many famous artists including Toulouse Lautrec. Jacomet eventually took over his business, developing his own printing method for the close reproduction of original artworks which became known as the Daniel Jacomet process. The process was essentially a combination of two techniques, namely collotypes and stencil (pochoir) colours.

T

he success of the process enhanced Jacomet’s reputation as one of the leading fine art printers in Europe and he worked with many major artists including Picasso, Braque, Chagall, Rouault, Miró and Dufy amongst others. Apart from the duration of the Second World War, when he was printing in Grenoble, Jacomet worked in Paris until the mid 1960s when the business was carried on by two of his sons and now continues in the hands of his grandson Bruno.

W

ithout the inclusion of the watermark you could be forgiven for believing that you were holding Picasso’s original drawing.

FRAMING

W

e have chosen to frame these beautiful prints in a 35mm hand-gessoed frame, water gilded with white gold leaf. The surface is lightly distressed to allow areas of the warm brown gesso to show through. The prints are floated onto acid-free mount board to leave the deckle edges visible.

T

he suite was issued in a limited edition of just 200 copies, of which this is number 130. There were also a further 26 hors commerce sets. The prints were made by the Jacomet process – Collotype and Pochoir. Each sheet carries a watermark of Picasso’s signature. We have one copy only of each print.
