This suite of 20 pochoir prints, published in 1955 after paintings made between 1904 and 1953, demonstrates key moments in Picasso’s artistic development.
These are extremely rare as the edition size was only 200. Pochoir is a method of printing using stencils and was popular in Europe, particularly France, around the turn of the century. It is a very labour intensive and expensive technique, which produces an image that is often indistinguishable from the artist’s hand painted original. The black, or key line, of each print is pulled on a lithographic press. The image is then cut into a stencil made from a fine sheet of metal and gouache or watercolour is applied by hand using a variety of different brushes. A separate stencil is required for each colour, sometimes up to twenty being used.
