Michael Rothenstein A Selection of Prints
Born in 1908 into an artistic family Michael Rothenstein was the son of the artist Sir William Rothenstein and his brother John became Director of the Tate Gallery. He studied art at Chelsea Polytechnic and the Central School of Arts before settling in rural Essex. During World War II Rothenstein took part in the Recording Britain project for the Pilgrim Trust. Rothenstein only started printmaking in 1948 with a lithograph for the Miller’s Press followed by a series of monotypes. Four years later he attended the avantgarde Atelier 17 print studio in Paris run by the master printmaker Stanley William Hayter. As a result of his experience in Paris his work changed considerably in style and during the 1960s he made numerous mixed media prints often using abstract symbols. He won first prize for
colour woodcuts and linocuts in the Giles Bequest Competition and also produced lithographs and screenprints. He taught printmaking at Camberwell School of Art and was later Art Fellow at Sheffield University. Rothenstein’s work is held by many important public collections such as the Tate Gallery, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the British Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1983. Rothenstein died in 1993. ...his contribution to British printmaking should not be underestimated; his creative imagination and the development of relief prints, especially in the direct use of found objects and materials, have been internationally recognized, and have won him a string of international prizes. Robin Garton, Art Critic
