Georges Rouault Réincarnations du Père Ubu Born into an impoverished Parisian family, Georges Rouault was apprenticed to a glass painter and restorer at the early age of fourteen. It has been plausibly suggested that the thick leaded outlines and vibrant colours which Rouault became accustomed to seeing in stained glass production were the source of the heavy black contours and glowing colours which he often adopted in his own mature paintings and prints. In 1891 Rouault entered the École des Beaux-Arts where his tutors included the symbolist painter Gustave Moreau who had an early influence upon his work. In 1913 Rouault’s career became seriously intertwined with the renowned Parisian art dealer Ambroise Vollard when the latter purchased the whole of his artistic output and four years later became his sole agent and also set him up in a studio. During the 1920s and ’30s Rouault received several major commissions from Vollard for works which have become amongst the most highly regarded of the 20th century including Réincarnations du Père Ubu, Miserere and Passion.

The inspiration for the Ubu illustrations was Alfred Jarry’s play Ubu Roi (King Ubu) of 1896 which is considered to be one of the seminal dramatic works in the theatre of the absurd and hence a forerunner of surrealist theatre and art. Rouault’s images for Réincarnations du Pére Ubu have quite a complex history in that they were initially made in 1918/19 to illustrate the subject of Ubu in the colonies when Vollard had trial prints pulled but no editions were issued. Some ten years later, in 1928/29, Rouault retouched the original copper plates which hadn’t been cancelled and Vollard issued them under the title Réincarnations du Père Ubu in 1932. Finally in 1955 a new edition (as offered here) was commissioned by the Société Normande des Amis du Livre using ‘smaller format’ plates than were made for the 1932 edition. For the earlier edition it had been Vollard’s intention to use the smaller plates to accompany an index of the images but this plan had never been activated. In summary, although the smaller plates were created, initialled and dated GR 1929 in the plate they were never used until 1955 for this superb Société Normande edition. The latter was issued in a limited edition of just 210 copies printed by Fequet & Baudier of Paris.
