New Exhibition
Cecil Collins Cecil Collins was born in Plymouth and initially studied at the town’s School of Art before winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London (1927-31). By the late 1930s Collins was moving away from the influence of Surrealism and developing his own highly individualistic style of Neo-Romanticism encompassing, amongst other things, visionary and metaphysical elements. Collins himself wrote of his art: I am not very interested in what is called pure painting or objet d’art. I am concerned with art as a metaphysical experience. His spiritual and visionary imagery was often in the form of recurring figures such as the Fool, the Angel and the Soul or Anima. Collins taught at the progressive Dartington Hall School in Devon (1939-43), and, for over thirty years, at the Central School of Art, London. He was awarded the M.B.E. in 1979. The Tate Gallery held retrospective exhibitions of his prints in 1981 and his paintings in 1989. The Tate holds seventy-five works by Collins.
It was in 1947 that Cecil Collins’ book ‘The Vision of the Fool and other writings’ was published.

The 1968 Bestiary also contained two lithographs - Beetles I and II, (II being with electric lamp). The print shown here is a variant, not in Tassi, and we think probably never editioned. Our copy is a proof pull.

Shell Oil launched one of its most successful ad campaigns, "Visit Britain", during the 1930s. This poster is from that series. The goal of these advertisements was to promote driving as a leisure pursuit which allowed drivers to sightsee around the British Isles while enjoying a drive - and by extension, filling their gas tanks with Shell brand petrol.
40. Brimham, Shell Poster lithograph, 1938, 75.5 x 113 cm
Graham Sutherland's abstracted interpretation of Brimham Rock in Yorkshire is similar in style to surrealist landscapes of the period. We felt it right to present this extremely rare lithographic poster without restoration. It could be completely restored if required.

During the Second World War much of London was scarred with bomb damage. The Lyons Teashops had not received any maintenance during the five years of the war and their interiors were showing signs of wear. Directors, Felix and Julie Salmon, felt that, rather than redecorate, they could be brightened by some pictures and, wanting to encourage young artists, approached Jack Beddington, Artistic Director of Shell-Mex, for advice.
The first series of sixteen posters was printed in 1947 by the craftsmen lithographers at Chromoworks Ltd, London. Artists included L.S Lowry, Edward Ardizzone, Mary Kessell, Edward Bawden, John Nash and Anthony Gross. The print run for the initial sixteen commissions was 1500, no reprints were undertaken. By special request a copy of each of the lithographs was retained and viewed by Queen Mary.
Due to the popularity of the prints two subsequent series were commissioned in 1951 and 1955, including artists such as Michael Ayrton, Edwin La Dell, John Minton, David Gentleman and John Piper. As the lithographs were printed on thin paper and often pasted directly onto the walls of the Lyons Teashops very few have survived intact.
