In 1972 the outstanding bird painter Charles Tunnicliffe RA carried out some experimental drawing on lithographic plates for a proposed book on falconry. Because of the prohibitively high costs, the book as it was envisaged, with original prints for illustrations, was never published. The prints sold well but a few folders of work lay forgotten for decades.
Charles Tunnicliffe RA, 1901-1979, has been described as ‘arguably one of the greatest bird painters of all time’ and his watercolours regularly featured in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions. He also illustrated many well known books, including Tarka the Otter. All his work reflected his devotion to country life and his magnificent bird studies derived from many years of passionate observation.

So successful were Matisse’s 1950s giant paper cut-outs that he was persuaded to reinterpret them as original lithographs. Once again it was the firm of Mourlot Frères in Paris who were charged with their printing.
