Wilhelmina Barns-Graham (1912-2004), painter and teacher. Attended Edinburgh College of Art then moved to St Ives where she became friends with Nicholson, Hepworth and Gabo. A key influence was a trip to Switzerland in 1948 where she fell in love with glaciers as a subject.
Bernard Leach (1887-1979), artist and potter. Studied art at the Slade and London School of Art, then pottery in Japan. Founded the Leach Pottery, St Ives in 1920. Exhibited widely throughout the world and became a major influence.
Sandra Blow (1925-2006), abstract painter. Studied at St Martin’s School of Art, the Royal Academy and the Academy of Fine Arts, Rome. Elected RA in 1978 with a retrospective there in 1994. Primarily concerned with balance and proportion, tension and scale. Tate Gallery holds her work.
Ben Nicholson (1894-1982), painter and printmaker of abstract persuasion but often using still life and landscape motifs. Son of artist William Nicholson. Married to Winifred Nicholson then Barbara Hepworth. Travelled extensively, meeting Picasso, Miró and Mondrian. Gained international reputation, exhibiting widely. Major retrospective at Tate, 1993-4.
Terry Frost (1915-2003), painter, printmaker and teacher. Studied at Camberwell School of Art, then assistant to Barbara Hepworth in St Ives. Notable for his use of primary colours and of shapes reflecting Cornish marine life. Exhibited widely, including RA and Tate. Knighted in 1998 for services to art.
William Scott (1913-1989), painter, printmaker and sculptor, born Scotland. Studied at Royal Academy. Lived in France and Italy for 3 years, then served during WW2. Returned to Bath where he met St Ives painters. In America met Rothko and Pollock. Established international reputation, exhibiting worldwide, including Venice Biennale (1958).
Adrian Heath (1920-1992), painter and teacher. Studied at Slade School of Art. POW in Germany. Moved into abstraction in late 1940s and in 1953 published important monograph: Abstract Art, its Origin and Meaning. Showed extensively in Britain and France. Work held by Tate, V&A, among others.
Alfred Wallis (1855-1942), painter, fisherman and scrap merchant. Claimed to have gone to sea at the age of nine. Took up painting in 1922 and was discovered by Christopher Wood and Ben Nicholson in 1928, who were drawn to and subsequently influenced by his primitive style.
Patrick Heron (1920-1999), painter, printmaker and writer. Studied at the Slade. Conscientious objector during WW2, worked on the land and at Leach Pottery. Wrote on art in New Statesman and Arts, New York. His soft-edged lozenges of vibrant colour became unmistakable. Work held by many major public galleries.
Christopher Wood (1901-1930), painter and designer. Studied drawing at the Académie Julian, Paris. Met Augustus John, Picasso and Jean Cocteau. Returned to England and painted and exhibited with Ben Nicholson. In 1938 Wood’s paintings were included at the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
Bryan Ingham (1936-1997), painter, sculptor, collagist and etcher. Studied at St Martin’s School of Art, then Royal College of Art under Carel Weight. Ingham was a prodigiously talented artist whose output followed on from the early Cubists. Work held by Arts Council, Ashmolean Museum and V&A.
Bryan Wynter (1915-1975), painter and teacher. Studied at the Slade. Conscientious objector during WW2, working on the land and moving to St Ives. Began as a figurative painter but moved into abstraction in 1956. Tate Gallery, V&A and Arts Council hold his work.
