Peter Ashley and Unmitigated Stamford ‘Peter Ashley is a man of multitudinous madeleines. He is the gatekeeper to several generations’ memories.’ So wrote Jonathan Meades in his preface to More from Unmitigated England (Adelphi 2007). With over twenty books to his name, Ashley has ceaselessly explored the country he cares so passionately about since he first learnt his craft as a commercial artist in the 1960s. No detail is left unnoticed, or indeed unrecorded, as he pounds his beat as one of the country’s leading chroniclers of the neglected and forgotten. And so, during an extensive period of writing and photographing for English Heritage, his passion for buildings of all shapes and sizes grew obsessively, culminating in the seminal The English Buildings Book (English Heritage 2006) which he co-produced with Philip Wilkinson. And so now it comes full circle, and the skills of painting in richly coloured gouache are reintroduced by Peter Ashley in a new series of townscape paintings, offered in a limited edition of 250 prints by the Goldmark Gallery. The first is Unmitigated Stamford, a cappricio of this Lincolnshire town with its unsurpassed wealth of stone built churches, houses, stations and workplaces. ‘Stamford has always been very special to me’ says Peter. ‘My uncle was editor of the local paper in the fifties, so we were always arriving by steam train into the town alongside the River Welland. I shall never forget standing amongst all these fabulously evocative buildings at a time when the Great North Road still thundered through the narrow streets; a medieval church seemingly on every corner’. Peter Ashley wearing his Patent Discriminator Goggles, which filter out the harsher realities of life.
