Graham Sutherland PEMBROKESHIRE SKETCHES c1970
Enchanting to me and exciting . . .
there is simply the fascination of things seen, and trying to understand the principles of what one sees. Graham Sutherland on drawing, 1972

Graham Sutherland From the 1940s onwards Graham Sutherland became known as one of the greatest twentieth century painters, initially as an official war artist and post-war with religious commissions (Crucifixion, St. Matthews northampton and Christ in Glory, Coventry Cathedral), portraits (Winston Churchill and Kenneth Clark) and landscapes. The landscape of Pembrokeshire was a profound source of inspiration for Sutherland’s paintings and although he first visited the area in 1934 it was only from 1967, long after his international artistic reputation was
established, that he chose to return repeatedly over many years. Something of what Sutherland felt about Pembrokeshire and its effect on his working methods can be gleaned from a letter he wrote in 1972: … I may go for a walk. There is everything around me. I look: certain things that one sees, almost by accident, seem to strike me more than others. Out of a thousand things I see – one juxtaposition of forms above all others seems to have a meaning. I don’t always understand what I am doing or what I am likely to do … my mind is receptive – but vacant.

Graham Sutherland on Pembrokeshire The quality of the light here is magical and
transforming – as indeed it is in all this country.
Watching from the gloom as the sun’s rays strike the further bank, one has the sensation of the after
tranquillity of an explosion of light. Or as if one had looked back into the sun and had turned suddenly away.

What comes through Sutherland’s Pembrokeshire sketches, writes fellow landscape artist Rigby Graham,
is a continual nervous sense of Sutherland quietly questing, feeling his way into, around and beyond, near objects often
with distances or distant objects suggested. The subjects are roots, branches, rocks, hills, roadways, pathways, hedges,
walls, fences, occasionally cloud formations and flare-like shapes sometimes suggestive of one thing, sometimes
another. Parts of the small watercolour drawings are cast in shadow which conceals, while in others light flashes or illuminates an area.

Mr Sutherland’s world is an unfinished thing, as though it had been
abandoned half way through the fifth day of creation. His shapes, for all their
subtlety, are clumsy. They suggest dinosaurs and mammoths. His hills heave themselves grimly against the sky. They are stark uncomfortable monsters made of raw earth and rock.
