Born in London in 1928 Joe Tilson worked as a carpenter and joiner for two years before doing his National Service in the RAF from 1946-49. His formal art studies were at St. Martin’s School of Art, where fellow students included Leon Kossoff and Frank Auerbach, followed by the Royal College of Art from 1952 where his contemporaries included Peter Blake and Richard Smith. He won the Rome Prize in 1955 which enabled him to live in the city and other parts of Italy for about two years thus beginning what has become a lifelong attachment to the country and a major influence upon his art. Tilson eventually returned to England and over the years taught at various art schools including the Slade, King’s College in Newcastle, the School of Visual Arts in New York and in Hamburg. From the early 1960s Tilson became closely associated with the British

Pop Art movement when his work often involved the use of bold colours and schematized, emblematic imagery sometimes combined with grids as a structural device. Tilson, who lives in London but also spends several months of each year in Italy, has enjoyed continuing success holding regular solo exhibitions at home and abroad for almost fifty years. Besides the Rome prize he has won several other prestigious awards including the Gulbenkian Foundation Prize (1960) and the Grand Prix d’Honneur, Biennale of Ljubljana (1996). He has also been given major retrospectives in Vancouver (1979), Bristol (1984) and the Royal Academy (Tilson: Pop to Present, 2002). In 1991 he was elected a Royal Academician and his work is held by many important public collections.
