Julian’s images offered me a world of real originality, of spatial paradox and a delicious, intelligent simplicity devoid of cynicism. I was enchanted. Patricia Jordan Evans

JULIAN
T R E V E LYA N 1 9 1 0 - 1 9 8 8 Moving to Paris in 1931 Trevelyan studied engraving at the influential and innovative print studio Atelier 17 with Stanley Hayter, working alongside Miró, Picasso and Ernst. Returning to London, Trevelyan exhibited at the ground breaking International Exhibition of Surrealism (1936). As an artist and photographer Trevelyan worked for Mass Observation on some of the earliest sociological and anthropological surveys in Britain and this experience clearly influenced his urban and industrial landscapes. Trevelyan became highly influential as a printmaker and teacher, being appointed Head of Etching at the Royal College of Art where his pupils included David Hockney and R.B. Kitaj. He made approximately 400 prints during his career. His contribution to printmaking was beautifully summed up by his wife, the artist Mary Fedden the medium of etching suited him perfectly . . . Julian invented such a marvellous graphic language; he pushed his personal vocabulary to the limits and he was one of the first in this country to use colour so boldly in his etchings. Goldmark Gallery has been fortunate to obtain several of Trevelyan’s fine etchings produced by Studio Prints, many of them being artist’s proofs or printer’s proofs and some having unique colour note instructions.

… to be surrounded by Julian Trevelyan’s images was a magical experience which has not diminished with time. His work was unlike that of any other artist I knew. Full of ingenuity and insight, it had an unmistakeable quirky humour … Patricia Jordan Evans

I think Julian was perhaps like a number of his contemporaries – Piper, Gross, Rothenstein, Nash, Sutherland – part of the great English tradition of individualists which characterised many artists of his time.
